How Can You Stand Her?It was very difficult for me to finish this book. I had to keep putting it down and do something else before I could muster the courage to pick it up again. This book, put simply, is a train wreck--horrible, but you can't stop looking.
The first book wasn't half bad, if you could look past the flat, uninteresting characters, bad narrative, and terrible grammar. (Isn't PC Cast a professor? I can only pray not for English.) The first book had new, innovative ideas for the teen-vampire genre.
This book was awful.
Zoey's perfect perfectness is disgusting. She has virtually no flaws. Any minor flaw she might have doesn't even matter, like the fact she's not as good as Damien in fencing. She's unique and hates it. She's modest, but it's not even to a fault. It's just revolting to imagine someone like this exists.
In fact, Zoey is pretty much what every girl wishes to be. She's perfect, has one mean villain, wonderful, loyal friends, and three studly guys lusting after her. (Don't even get me started on that. As soon as Loren came into the picture, I nearly dropped the book like hot iron.)
Her friends lack personality. There is a portion in the book wherein Zoey names their virtues, but we never see much of them.
And the authors are very obviously emoting in their books. Their clear disdain for any sort of Christian-based religion oozes out of the first chapter (I'm not even religious, but the sheer disdain and self-righteousness made me feel queasy). Every female who hates Zoey is a "ho". And, of course, Zoey and Aphrodite both had such terrible upbringings.
Truth be told, despite Aphrodite's trite childhood, she was the only vaguely interesting character. She did more showing than telling, and when she did it was pretty much the only time these authors abide that rule. Flat statements of how the narrator hates homophobes and believes more "white men should date women of color" to "expand their horizons." Seriously, SHOW these things, don't give the reader a lecture.
If you appreciate vampires, good writing, and interesting characters... DO NOT pick this book. I can't stomach any more of Zoey, and buying the third book when they decide to unleash it on the world is a definite NO from this avid teen-vampire reader.
Really ImpressiveZoey Redbird is the most powerful vampyre fledgling the House of Night has ever seen. In fact, as far as anyone knows Zoey is the most powerful fledgling in vampyre history. She has been touched by Nyx(The Goddess of Night.) It's clear by Zoey's accelerated rate of change and ever growing abilities that she is meant for somthing profound. But for all that Z still has to go through all the growing pains that come with being a teenager. She's got boys coming out of the would work. There's her almost ex boyfriend Heath, who she's imprinted with
and who's blood she craves, Zoey's Vampyre Superman, upper classman Eric Night(yep that's really his name.) And to help complicate matters, Zoey seems to be conecting on a very personal level with part time tacher and poet Loren Blake who is as amazing as he is forbidden. Whats a girl to do?
Zoey has taken over leadership of the Dark Daughters and Sons, and is determined to change the school oganization from an elitist clique to a group with meaning, value and substance. she is getting comfortable in her skin and things are getting easier to deal with. But Zoey's strength is about to be tested again. In new and truly terrible ways. She must learn to cope with a soul deep sadness, deal with a betrayal that cuts to the bone, and keep a promise that may turn out to be impossible.
Any doubts I had about this series were erased with this book. This for me is one of those reads that make you grumble at being interupted and reevaluate the need for sleep and food, then grumble some more cause the wait till the next book(in this case Choosen in March '08) is intirely to long.
You should know that unlike most of P C's books this is not a stand alone story. You don't abosolutely have to read Marked first to understand Betrayed But it really helps and I recommend it highly. If you read Marked and weren't thrilled with it, please reconsider and read Betrayed. It really is that good!
Where the heck are the editors?Had I not been required to read and review this book, I might not have read past the second or third chapter. I had a hard time believing how bad it was, however, and kept thinking it would get better.
The authors start out with a great concept: a vampire finishing school. However, they seem utterly unable to evoke any sort of sense of place, and scenes that take place within the school are largely indistinguishable from those that take place outside it. The idea of a vampire finishing school lends itself to some sort of dark humor, but alas, any humor whatsoever is absent entirely from the clumsy and self-serious narration.
The narrator is not particularly believable as a teenager, and the authors abuse the first-person narrative by violating the best-known precept of good writing: show us, don't tell us. They never bother to show what they can have the narrator tell us, laboriously and without grace. Oh, and with as many adjectives as possible. (Where were the editors? It didn't have to be this bad.) It's hard to understand why everyone likes the main character, as she's about as prone to repeating herself, using exactly the same phrases, as the stereotypical elderly lady you can't get away from. Oh, old Zoey's on again about how she's the only fledgling to have power over all the elements and to have a filled-in tattoo! Smile and nod, folks, smile and nod.
Finally, the plot itself has little sense of momentum. Most of the events, rather than seeming to arise organically out of what has come before, seem manufactured to get the narrator where she needs to go.
There is the start of some decent character development in Aphrodite and Neferet, but not enough to make me read anything else in this series. What a pity such a great concept was so thoroughly wasted.
For vampire stories with actual wit and good writing, I'd suggest Tanya Huff's Blood series instead, Kim Harrison's Hollows series, or Stephanie Meyers' books. You can get your vampire fix without having to endure this sort of bad writing.
Interesting SequelBetrayed, the second book in the House of Night series, picks up where Marked left off--Zoey, newly Marked as a vampyre fledgling, must take up her new duties as Leader of the Dark Daughters. Along with her good friends Stevie Rae, Erin, Shaunee, and Damien, Zoey wants to find a new direction for the group after the ouster of nemesis Aphrodite. Amid all the stress of drama of perfecting a circle casting, Zoey's love life is also in turmoil. She finds herself attracted to not just two boys, but also a very sexy young professor who seems to be attracted to her as well. What will Zoey do about obsessed ex-boyfriend Heath, whose friends are disappearing at an alarming rate? And what about the fledgling vampyre Erik, who is everything Zoey should want? Betrayed is indeed quite dark in tone, and the story takes a tragic turn just when Zoey should be celebrating.
After a bit of a slow start, Betrayed picks up nicely around fifty pages in or so. The storyline takes place over just a few days, and it is action-packed. Zoey's grief and shock are well written, and her boyfriend dilemma is believable as long as it's between Heath and Erik. But Betrayed is not without fault. The idea of a professor, even a young one, flirting shamelessly with a sixteen year old is just icky. The "Twins" are so superfluous that I feel they are forced into scenes. And if teens actually continuously used language the way these teens do, I'd be very, very surprised. Not over the cursing itself, but just the general conversation seems so stilted.
While I did enjoy Betrayed more than I initially thought I would, it could do with a bit of housecleaning to rid itself of too much coincidence and too little realistic interaction among the teens. I also think that much of the "vampyre" rituals seem to be more "witch-like" than they should be. But in general I did enjoy the story and I still like the whole idea of The House of Night and creepy undead creatures and people who aren't what they seem to be. I'd love to give this one 3.5 stars for general entertainment.
It was alright...I have to say, I was a real fan of Marked, the first novel in the House of Night series. Like most sequels, however, Betrayed can't compete. The plot seemed rather random, especially with the "cliff-hanger" ending; the romance, while well written, seemed there just for the sake of "spicing up" a not-so-developed story.
Still, I can't complain about the romance. Loren was a great character, and I liked how Cast tried to make Zoey get in touch with her adult side when she was around him.
The religion bashing was harsher this time, and definitely not subtle. Although every religion has its negatives - and yes, often they are awful - most books show an understanding of the fact that religion itself is not bad, but the people who twist it. The Casts came off as just wanting to rant at non-Pagan religions, without actually understanding them or their background. Did the parents come to visit for any other purpose?
More (graphic?) sexual (not always romance) scenes. Take that as a negative or positive as you will.
Still, Betrayed is written with its great humor still there, and Aphrodite is finally fleshed out, making her one of the characters to empathize with the most.
A second book in any series usually is just a connecter, which I felt that Betrayed was. I'm still looking forward to Chosen, the next book in the series, though.
I couldn't finish it.I actually returned this book. I got to page 60 and just could not bring myself to read any further. I cared nothing for the characters and found it way to simple. The constant pop culture references bothered me; they just dumbed down the book. There are many other young adult books that are much better and more original.
So. Freakin. Awesome. This book rocks so much I don't know where to start. I mean, what's not to love? Great characters, a completely fresh take on vamps, odd happenings, wicked cool tattoos, super powers and a delicious selection of hot guys. Dude, count me in.
What's even cooler is that this book is written by a mother/daughter team. Can you imagine? So fabulous, there aren't enough words! Buy one for yourself and one to lend out because you are NOT going to want to share your copy.
Why do people like this?I have read 100's of books but this series by far has been one of the worst wastes of time I have had. I read Chosen, thought it was a cool concept. However, nothing is done with the concept. The characters fall flat, each feels no different than any other and by the end I realized that I couldn't even remember half of their names. To include Zoey!! I had to go back and look. The ending was so juvenile and cliche that it felt like the other didn't even know how to end it. Now, I am aware that sometimes first books can't develop characters in a series well so I decided to read Betrayed. What a colossal steamer that turned out to be. The characters once again were flat and I could careless about any of them. Erik wasn't even in the first quarter of the book, completely pointless and uninteresting character we know nothing about. Too many love interests/attractions and not enough relationship development between characters. Juvenile writing style that is insulting to read. I love this genre of YA fiction but I would point you towards series like Twilight, Vampire Academy, Tithe, Great and Terrible Beauty and the Sweep Series which are all well written and creative stories with strong and interesting characters. I finished this book two days ago and now can barely remember anything specific about it. Not a good sign...
Courtesy of Teens Read TooHaving defeated her arch-nemesis in the previous book, Marked: A House of Night Novel (Book 1), Zoey should be on top of the world. But she's got the nagging feeling in the back of her mind that something's drastically wrong. At first, she thinks it could be all the stress she's under from her first ritual she's planning, or maybe the various boys in her life. She admits she's worried about the boys from her old school who have turned up missing.
Then Zoey witnesses a conversation between Aphrodite and Neferet that leaves her breathless. Now Zoey's scared.
Zoey needs her friends more than ever, but she's not too sure whom she can trust.
The mother-daughter team of P.C. and Kristin Cast creates another suspenseful tale with a down-to-earth character blessed with magical powers. Fans of the Stephenie Meyer books are sure to gobble up this series.

Full of ErrorsThis book had so many grammatical errors, mis-used words and inconsistancies I actually e-mailed the publisher to complain, something I've never done before. I can think of no excuse for an English teacher and Journalism major to be putting out a product for young adult readers with obvious mistakes such as incorrect verb tenses.
The main character and her female friends repeatedly make fun of their gay male friend for using words longer than two sylables and define these words for the reader. Come on, if they're old enough to be reading this book give the readers a little credit for having a vocabulary somewhat appropriate to their age group!
Add to the mix overtones of pedophilia with an adult teacher romantically stalking the heroine, a morally smug protagonist referring to her enemies as "ho" while she herself interacts with every interesting male in the book, constant use of the word "poo" and it's really hard to recommend this other than as a beach read for bored adults. If you can pick it up cheap at Costco it might be a satisfying light read.
The House of Night Meets Beverly Hills 90210Right from the first chapter this book was noticeably more teen-like and critical of organized religion. Some may argue that the characters are teens, and therefore should talk like teens. I, however, found it a bit off-putting. It was almost like the authors were trying too hard to be "cool" or tap into that teen audience. I don't remember the first book being that way at all. An example; He was also incredibly talented. Someday soon he was going to join the ranks of other vamp movie stars like Matthew McConaughey, James Franco, Jake Gyllenhal, and Hugh Jackman (who is totally hot for an old guy). ~cringe~ Yikes. He was born in 1968. At 10 years older than me, I still wouldn't refer to him as an `old guy'!! Probably not the best example of it, but one that made me laugh out loud. Also there is a lot of unnecessary use of `hell' and `damn'. They were thrown in to places where it wasn't necessary.
Zoey's step-father is a member of the People of Faith, which is an over-exaggerated religious group. I know there are religious extremes that are like this, but the People of Faith are made out to be hypocritical, judgemental, close-minded, patriarchal (with women playing subservient roles), and all-around not-so-nice people. I do have to say, this book is set in a made-up world where vampyres (yes with a y not an i...one of these days I will have to look up what the difference is) live amongst people and the people are aware that vampires are there. The People of Faith is apparently the only major religion around. I thinkthe idea is that religion has gone affray in the world of Zoey Redbird, but then again there is a boarding school for vampires that everyone knows about!
One last thing. I mentioned in this review and in my review of Marked, that I find it odd to have the setting be a modern-day version of our world, only where vampyres have always existed. I didn't mention before that of all the places in the world, this one has Tulsa, Oklahoma as the vampire hub of the US. I guess if I'm thinking vampire I think of New York, San Francisco, New Orleans...not Tulsa. I've been there. Not exactly the setting I would choose for a vampire novel, but I suppose P.C and Kristin Cast had a different vision.
I think that is all of the negative stuff out of the way...on to the positive! I still love the Native American twist on the vampire story. I also detected almost an Egyptian feel to some of it. The way that cats are treated as sacred, the methods of worship, and the ancient runes all had an Egyptian feel to me. I may be wrong, just my interpretation.
Zoey is a very likable character. So is her best-friend Stevie Rae. The other members of Zoey's clique started to annoy me. Mostly because they were the ones stuck with the "teeny-like" lines that I mentioned above. i.e. ...Erin said. "My `rentals sent me an e-mail. They aren't coming 'cause of some Thanksgiving cruise they decided to take to Alaska with my Aunt Alane and Uncle Liar Lloyd. Whatever." Just mildly annoying reading someones dialogue when it is like that for most of the book.
Overall the book was readable, despite it's flaws. There was a part of the book that brought a tear to my eye! Still left in the series are; Chosen, Untamed, Hunted, and the soon to be released (10*29*09) Tempted. I will read at least the next book in the series to see how the writing progresses. I'm curious to see.
Please come and visit me at my blog, Between the Lines, at [...]. I'd love to hear from you!
Betrayed is Right!Maybe once upon a time I wouldn't be as picky about this book, but this was a disappointment compared to the first. The little things that bothered me in the first book magnified and expanded in this one. The 'Aww, shucks. Little ol' me?' routine and attitude of Zoey is wearing, to say the least. C'mon, give her some flaws or something, nobody is perfect and the false modesty is cloying.
Now the bane of the book (and series thus far)... the 'Twins.' Ugh, need I go on? The authors repeatedly bash the reader over the head with how alike they are but how different they look and how they grew up. Almost every sentence they utter contains the word twin. Such as, 'Twin, I get what you're saying.' 'Twin' this, 'twin' that! WTF? No one speaks like that. Which brings up a whole different issue with the unrealistic dialogue, but I won't get into that. I think the 'Twins' are supposed to add comedic value, but they don't, they're just annoying and I wish they'd die in the vampire transition (horrible of me I know). They're one-dimensional, don't have any depth, and are pointless to the story except for being part of the elements, which they can be replaced I'm sure. We get that they're twins, but not, we get it! We don't have to be hit over the head time and again!!
Now for the basic plot. Not as interesting as the last, but okay. Hated what happened nearer the end and I don't really get why it was done. I could have offered two other alternatives. ;P The three love interests? Overkill to the nth degree. Are we supposed to like Zoey, or hate her? I think it'll be a while until I pick up the next book, if I even do that, but I do wonder what'll happen to you-know-who. (Don't want to give anything away for those who want to read it.)
Teen paranormal?Parent's beware, this one is a bit more explicit than the first. Zoey becomes more daring with her love interest(s), especially since she has decided to juggle three boys (all boys of interest would be considered an adult since they are all 18 or older).
I really liked the first book in this series, but I was a bit disappointed with this one. I didn't feel as though the story went anywhere. With the exception of Aphrodite, I felt the characters did not grow whatsoever. All the reader learned was about Zoey's plans of how she would like to change the Dark Daughters and Sons. We already figured out there was something fishy with Neferet and the dead kids were not staying dead, so it was a major let down for me reading this book.
I still plan to read the next, since it has been my experience that second books often lack that oommph. I've got my fingers crossed for the next one.
A great followup to Marked! In this follow-up to Marked, Zoey has begun to settle into her life at the House of Night, a vampyre finishing school for fledgling vampyres. She's taken over as leader and High Priestess in training of the Dark Daughters and Sons and is greatly admired by her friends and many other students in the school. Yet something is itching at the back of her mind; a strange darkness surrounds the school that somehow feels wrong. Zoey wonders if it has anything to do with the ghosts she's been seeing, or if it's all just her overactive imagination...
But when a couple of her old friends from Broken Heart go missing, and then later turn up dead, Zoey is inclined to start listening to her instincts. And they're telling her that perhaps the strange feelings and dreams she's been having might just be some sort of vision. For someone is definitely not what they appear, and betrayal can lie in the most unlikely of places.
I totally loved this book! It was a great follow-up to Marked. It even works well for readers who may have missed the first book as the author brings up any important points from the previous novel as necessary. In a few cases I found it kind of redundant, but probably because I'd read Marked right before Betrayed. But readers who went several months between reading the two books, or those who didn't read Marked at all, will greatly appreciate the reminders. Though as is usually the case with series, and especially here since I felt a real affinity for Zoey, I do think that reading both books will give you a deeper appreciation for the characters.
The 3rd book in the series, Chosen is not due out in March, and I can't wait to read it!
Book 2I loved the first in the series and wasnt let down on bit by this second book. I dont want to ruin what happens, ut at a certain part I actallu wanted to cry because I felt for Zoey so much. That poor girl!
Anyways, I really cant wait until march for the third book in the series. Once this is over, I really hope both authors team up again and start another series.
Still TriteMy review for book 1: This wasn't one of the worst books I have ever read, but it still was one the dumbest books I have ever read. The characters are superficial and cliched, the plot predictable and silly, and the narration is whiny and irritating. The main character and her friends are sterotypes. The writing is very childish and reads like a wet dream.
And it still does read like that for the 2nd book as well.
Betrayed by Betrayed?Continuing on with the House of Night Novels, Zoey finds herself in a lovers....square? Three guys potentially going after her and she can not figure out which one to be with. Erik the hot fledging, Heath her boyfriend from when she was a human or Loren the off limits Vampyre teacher. Everybody loves Zoey. Shocker!
Zoey get almost everything she wants four awesome friends, guys swooning over her, leader of the Dark daughters but not everything is perfect. She keeps seeing dead fledgings turn into these red eye creatures. Also, humans are dying close to the House of Night making it look like the vamps are killing humans. When someone close to her is taken by these red eye creatures and someone close to her is turned into these red eye creatures Zoey takes it on herself to figure out what is going on and to save her friends!
The ending of this book didn't make me want to continue to the next book as much as the last one. It is kind of getting redundant now. And, the author summarizes so much from the previous book which seems like too much. I already know this, I read the first one...so move on! I started the third book a couple pages in and so far all it is is a summary of the last two. Sometimes you might want to put in a bit to let you remember but when it was say over and over in the first one, and over and over in the second I am pretty sure we got the point now.
I am starting to wonder if I will be able to get through all these books without getting bored of Zoey Redbird.
Interesting Premise, Dreadful Protagonist--SpoilersThroughout this book my one consistent thought was that this could be a phenomenal series with some major edits. There are a lot of reasons for this and many of these reasons are expressed in my review of Marked. I happen to like Betrayed better than Marked. And I think I'll ramble on a bit about what I liked and didn't like in the hopes of reaching some conclusion.
The concept of the book is wonderful. I wasn't exactly impressed when I read 'vampire finishing school' for the first time but the Casts have really put a wonderful spin on vampires. And though I do like my traditional folklore, I do appreciate a good spin. And there's plenty to keep the reader interested and entertained. I know I certainly enjoyed the bomb threat scene.
But sometimes the characters just make me want to hit myself with the book a couple of times. A few are still loaded with potential--I happen to like Aphrodite and Stevie Rae best for exactly this reason. And if their potential remains unharnessed in books to come I'll have lost all sense of why I even bother reading. Characters are important to me and these are the only two characters that have carried these first two books. I also think that given a little work Damien might deserve his time in the spotlight as well. And Neferet...well, I'll have to see where the Casts go with Neferet before I really pass judgement.
Who isn't displaying this promise for blossoming? Zoey and the Twins. And Erik isn't really doing much for me either. Shaunee and Erin--the 'Twins'--are just...annoying. I mentioned in my review of Marked that it would not be cute for Shaunee and Erin to be developed as a single person because they're so much alike. Unfortunately, this seems to be where their characters are going. And their constant use of "Twin this" and "Twin that" is profoundly irritating. The concept of two completely different people being so alike is interesting--but it shouldn't be the only concept that you work with!
And I just can't get over how little growth Zoey shows despite the fact that she is the main character. And you want to know why she doesn't show growth? Because she is already unnaturally perfect. She has more gifts than you can count on one hand. She has three boyfriends. (I'm sorry, a boyfriend, an ex-boyfriend that she still wants to be with, and a teacher she openly flirts with.) And she is moral and honorable and says words like "poopie".
Speaking of Zoey, seeing things from her point of view really brings down the quality of the books' writing. She sounds like she's trying to hard to come across as a normal teenager and not doing too well at it. I mentioned the annoying amplifiers she uses in my previous review--totally, seriously, definitely, completely, etc.--and no, that still hasn't stopped. And what's worse is the little parenthetical interjections that Zoey always has to add in. My favorite in this one occurred while she was Googling prestigious high schools. She came across one called Mrs. Porters and couldn't resist adding: "Really--hee hee--that's the school's name." Sorry Zoey, I'm not seeing the humor.
As far as the story goes, the book is lively and interesting. I was only bothered by a few things within the story itself. The one thing that springs to mind is the random inane chatter between Zoey and Heath while she's facing off about a dozen members of the undead to rescue him. It was very throwing since most people with common sense would know that such a scene would not be the time or place.
As for the vampires themselves, I love the Paganistic rituals and customs and think that they add flavor to the story. Earth, water, fire, air, and spirit? I love it and can't wait to read more of it. But the one thing that bothers me: can we please stop with the unwarranted prejudice? The scene where Zoey's parents visited in the beginning was the only other scene I can think of that threw me from the story. It really just came off as way to make the Christian character seem like an ass. One of the themes in the book is acceptance of others but why can't the Casts extend this ideal to every denomination of people?
I'm really hoping for this series to be great. I want the stars to keep building with each book. But I don't see that happening unless a few changes are made.
(Oh, and I have to give due to the cover designer. These books are beautiful.)
Betrayed (House of Night, Book 2)Great book! I could not put it down. Lots of excitement and thrills from beginning the end. I definitely recommend it to all avid Betrayed fans!
Put me to sleepI had problems with the first book - mainly the anti-organized religion message & the high level of sexuality for the teen readers' age group. However, it was a fun story. I enjoyed it.
I read Betrayed hoping that the story would get better and the other stuff disappear. The opposite happened. More church-people-are-evil, and now Zoey is interested in a teacher. And there is a lot less story.
I mean a LOT less story. I kept putting the book down because it was so BORING. The characters who were cute in the first book are now just annoying. ("Easy" "Peasy" "Japanesy") Zoey is behaving out of character (how could she be interested in Heath again?). And all our understanding of who is a good guy/bad guy is thrown up in the air.
On the last, if that had been well done, it would have worked. The problem was it was badly done, obvious, and seemed like it was more for the effect than anything else.
I wouldn't recommend this book. I'm done with the series.
Better than 'Marked', Good OverallI found this novel much improved over the first in the 'House of Night' series. Zoey, the lead character, is coming into her own as a fledgling vampyre (to use the book's spelling). She struggles with the same teenage issues as many girls today, while also being asked to perform a task usually reserved for older girls- Leader of the Dark Daughters.
The storyline was more involved than the first novel, and the characters are becoming more developed - making for a much more interesting read. I found the writing style to be easier to read and less 'teenager-ish'. I plan to read the next book in this series.
It's called "Betrayed" for a reason...WOW! I've purposely kept myself from reading any reviews of these books until I finished reading them to keep the story a surprise and it definitely was!
Truth be told, the book started out kind of slow. Actually, I was a little let down with the first 2/3 of it. Zoey is finding her place at HON and has surrounded herself with a great group of friends. But then people she knows from her former life start disappearing and it all points to a vampyre. Quite honestly, I felt at first like this was being dragged out and nothing was really happening to find out why people were disappearing and who was behind it. But once the action started, things were finally starting to shape up and we learn of what's really going on.
There wasn't a whole lot of character development for me. The only people we really learned more about was Aphrodite and Nephret. In the first book I just knew that I wasn't going to like Aphrodite's character at all but after this book I think I'm changing my mind. We learn why she acts the way she does and does some of the things that she does. We also learn a bit about her family and that explains A LOT! Nephret's part in this book is very telling as well. I can't really say more than that without giving anything away but I can't wait to see what happens next with her.
Zoey is discovering more about her powers and her connection with the goddess Nix and that's a big part of her story in this book. I've read in some reviews that her love triangle (or maybe quandrangle?) was bothersome to some readers. For me, it really didn't even phase me. She's a 16 yo. I think that was down perfectly and I remember times like that.
All in all, a pretty good book. The last 1/3 more than makes up for the first 2/3 and I will for sure continue reading the series.
A great sequel of a unique vampyre taleBetrayed by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast is the second novel in the House of Night series and is it was great. The entire book was so suspenseful that I had to finish it immediately. Betrayed goes over the main parts that a reader may have missed from the first book, Marked, so that anyone can start reading the series without having read the first book. This is definitely a vampyre series worth reading, since it is so unique from other vampyre tales that you will enjoy its creativity.
Unlike the first book, Betrayed actually leaves the reader with suspense and curiosity as to what would happen in the next novel, Chosen. I liked how there were hints given in this novel, through the characters' actions as to what may be a problem in the next novel. Once you start approaching the end of the novel, you will hope that the novel could have been longer.
Zoey Redbird is getting used to the House of Night as the new high priestess in training. There is a new professor that will only be staying the year, Loren Blake, the vamp poet Laureate, who is gorgeous and seems to like her. Then there's Erik Night, the guy who Zoey is dating. And then there's her ex-boyfriend, Heath Luck, who she still seems to have feelings for. How will Zoey ever decide who she wants as her boyfriend?
There are high school boys that Zoey knew that are going missing and are being found dead with a loss of blood and multiple lacerations. Being chosen by the vampyre goddess Nyx, Zoey feels responsible to find out who or what is killing them. Discover the terrible secrets that are being hidden by people in the House of Night.
With paranormal fantasy, suspense, adventure, and some romance, what more could you ask for? I definitely want to continue the House of Night series, but I hope that the rest of the books in the series are released soon.
AwesomeI blazed through this series. I really liked the author's sytle of writing. It kept me interested every step of the way.
Disappointed.I thought the first book wasn't half bad, it had a lot of good moments. This book was utterly terrible. Just to start it was far too corny and unrealistic for my taste, even for a fictional novel. The characters' behavior is just rediculous. And the entire story is completely repetitive, every scene is the same with different characters. Speaking of characters, they are all so flat and, again, repetitive. I still don't know any more about the main, most basic, characters than i did in the first book, which isn't much. Even the heroine of the story, Zoey, has a very nondynamic and boring personality. The only characters worth any attention are Neferet and Aphrodite. The storyline is slow and seems to be completely focused on stupid guy problems that don't go anywhere and are really just rediculous. These books had great potential but have failed to fulfill that potential in this book. To say the least, i'm dissappointed and would not recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dynamic characters, clever plot twists, or intelligent writing.
I have to agree with Deidre(the 1st review on this page)I recently became interested in the Vampire novel genre after reading Twilight. Since reading it i have read several other vampire series, including this one. Sadly this one is at the bottom of my recommendation list for other to read. The first few books from this series were very promising, which made me read all of them that are released but i was very disappointed afterward. I did not feel as close to the characters as i wanted to, or become attached, at all. They definitely lacked personality, the authors were annoyingly repetitive and i felt as though there were many loose ends in the novels. I found myself asking questions about the story and characters that were given no answers. If you want to read a great story based on vampires, i would look elsewhere before reading House of Night.
The plot thickensThere are a lot of things about this story that are so very, very clichéd. The 'specialness' of the main character, the angst, the drama... but somehow, it seems to work. There's a slight spark of realism (what girl doesn't remember a teenage crush on a much older guy?) that seems to keep it working. And though a lot of the storyline is fairly predictable, it moves along nicely and keeps you interested while you motor through it.
On the flip side, there's not a lot about this book I'm finding remarkable or memorable. It was fun to read, but seems to fade fairly quickly. I think, perhaps, the enjoyment from reading was more in the style of writing than in the plot - perhaps the quirks and flow of the writing were really what was carrying the somewhat tired plot-line. I mean, a flawed but super-special heroine fighting evil is... well, it is terribly over-done. And a few of the characters seem to be there more for the moral lessons than to really enhance the plot.
It left me wanting to read the next in the series, though, so I suppose it was good enough. I'd recommend it to people who liked a lot of the recent main-stream YA supernatural fiction, and for those who disliked Twilight, I can tell you this series is written much, much, much better. And there aren't any sparkly people.
DecentBought the series after I read the Twilight set. Not quite up to par with that series. But still a decent read. Took me a while to get into them.
Ok read...I went to Borders looking for a different series, and got suckered in by the sales lady. She insisted that it was better than the Twilight Series. I read the first one and now I'm on the second. I beg to differ that its NOT better than Twilight. It has some good points. But in all reality its Harry Potter/Mean girls with vampires. I dont think its original, but as state above it has some good points to it. I will probably read the rest of the books only because I want to know what happens. I feel that this book is filled with a lot of cliches. I dont like how the author hold Zooey on this pedestal. Would I reccommend it to someone? Probably not.
Great series!!This book starts up immediately where "Marked" left off: Zoey is settling into life as a vampire fledgling, surrounded by her newfound friends at the House of Night. She has proven herself a worthwhile student in the goddess, Nyx's, eyes and has been marked with a unique design across her forehead - something that has never been done to anyone - vampire or fledgling. Not only does Zoey have to take the responsibility as the leader of the Dark Daughters - she has a blooming relationship with Erik Night evolving, an imprint with her ex-human boyfriend - not to mention teens around town are being killed which all signs point to the vampirs and the House of Night as the culprits. It's easy to get caught up in Zoey's world; I really enjoy this series and look forward to the others!
Surprisingly better than Marked...I wasn't a very huge fan of Marked because it started painfully boring for me. My review for that book was very brutal. For redemption, though, I think that this book is a good light read. Ohhhh~ I like.
Witches posing as 'vampyres'This book was much better than the first one. Lots more twists and turns and less predictable. I have gotten used to the writting so it wasn't so annoying the 2nd time around. The author toned down the pop culture references(thank God). It bothers me that they are labeled 'vampyres'..come on now, they're witches with a teeny bit of bloodlust thrown in. It's silly we're pretending otherwise.
Something that was super annoying is how perfect all the boys are who fall over Raven, give me a break. The character Eric flatlined, Loren seemed like an afterthought, and her human ex-bf is uninteresting. The big mystery is what those undead creatures are so I can't wait to read Chosen haha
This book is just as good as the firstThis book is just as good as the first, it makes you feel like your living Zoey Redbird's life right along side her.
A little bit better than the first one...Betrayed was a solid follow up to the first House of Night book, Marked. The tension level was elevated, the stakes were higher, and the concepts got a little bit more adult in this one.
Zoey has a lot more to handle in this installment: an attraction to three men--Erik, her fledgling boyfriend; Heath, her human ex-boyfriend who has Imprinted with her and shows no signs of being bothered by it; and Loren Blake, vampyre poet laureate and visiting professor, who is technically off-limits to her--which is making her feel like a skank; leadership of the Dark Daughters, with the responsibility of removing the taint from Aphrodite's past leadership; and a nagging feeling that something is not quite right about her mentor, High Priestess Neferet.
Zoey became more real, as she makes hard choices and sometimes wrong ones, like the decision to keep her bond with Heath. I had an easier time being in Zoey's head this time around, and when Stevie Rae died, I felt shaken up.
However, so much of the story takes place inside Zoey's own head that most of the supporting cast, again, is left looking sort of hollow and flat. The worst, though, by far, was Erik. For someone who Zoey is supposed to be so close to, almost nothing is spoken. There is nothing about his family, his hometown, his past, anything except that he wins Shakespeare competitions, likes dork movies like Zoey, and is very jealous. His jealousy, coupled with the fact that almost no other character qualities are stated about him, makes him a very unattractive character, and more and more I wondered why she was with him.
A lot of questions were left at the end of this one, like what exactly Neferet was doing with the undead fledglings, and why they had become undead in the first place. Also, the status of Zoey's relationship with Aphrodite, as well as Aphrodite's motivations for anything, was a huge question mark for me.
I liked the book, but it felt uneven to me; the hollow characterizations detracted from the strength of the storyline and the tension and anxiety of Zoey's choices.
AwesomeIn the popular teenage vampire genre the House of Night series stands out. The main character is strong, and rolls with the punches. She doesn't back down, and she doesn't think she's underserving of all good forture (which I like most). If you're going to read a teenage vamp novel, THIS is the series.
As Excellent as the First! In our second story, Zoey Redbird has become more than just "special" - she's been gifted with paranormal powers by the Vampyre's goddess, Nyx and has a unique mark that no other fledgling has (a fledgling is the stage before becoming a Vampyre. It is hard on all fledglings and many die in the process known as the "change". A mark is a moon-shaped figure that appears on teenagers foreheads when they are turned into a fledgling.) Zoey's life grows more complicated at the House of Night (a Vampyre finishing school) while she juggles three different boys, all of whom she is deeply attracted to, trying to cure her constant desire for blood (something that a fledgling at her age is NOT supposed to have!), leading the schools "club" called the dark daughters she is definetly in over her head!
But something else is happening to her and the House of Night - fledgling are dying and Zoey has been seeing them! And there's something else: Who can Zoey REALLY trust?
This is an excellent sequal to the first book "Marked". I have an educated guess that if you try out this book you will enjoy it so please give it a try!
Mixed Feelings....I really had mixed feelings while reading this book. I still like the characters and most of the plot. But, the beginning of the book almost ruined it for me. When Neferet is basically insulting Christians and their beliefs, I almost had to stop reading and just put the book down. The choice of words used was a little harsh. That bothered me. If things like that don't bother you or you can ignore it like I did, then you will probably enjoy the book. I enjoyed this book a little more than "Marked" only because it seemed like much more was happening. You get to know some of the characters a lot more and I think the plot was much more interesting. The ending really makes you want to read the next book...which I am looking forward to.
My daughter loves this bookThis was the first item on my daughter's Christmas list. She devoured the book in 3 days. She has since reread the first book in the series and has asked for the next as soon as it is published.
entertaining vampire thrillerWhen Zoey Redbird was MARKED by the vampyre goddess Nyx, it was known that she would turn into a vampyre or die while being at the House of Night, a school and home for fledglings who need to be with their own kind and away from humans. However Zoey is not a normal fledgling because unlike her so called peers she has aMark yhat is filled in and an affinity for all elementals.
Thank to her mentor The High Priestess, Zoe is the new leader of the Dark Daughters and the enemy of Aphrodite and her clique who tortured others and called up vampiric ghosts. High school football players that Zoe knew when she was human are found dead. When her former boyfriend Heath, whom she still cares about in spite of her Changing into a vampyre turns up missing, Zoe vows to go to hell to find and rescue him and save her school from the murderous invaders. Instead she is captured by the killers due to a betrayal by someone she trusts.
Although this is classified as teen fiction, adults will enjoy this just like we do the works of André Norton. The mother-daughter author team casts a spell on readers in which vampires are accepted as a real species by humans. In some ways Zoe is a teenage Anita Blake before experience made the latter wary of sentient beings. The story line is fast-paced with a bit of an amateur sleuth mystery solved the hard way: being captured as Zoey fights for her freedom and being true to her school.

why put it downi loved this book and it was almost impossible to put it down! i went for 3 hours just reading and reading and reading......... the characters were awesome too! zoey is my favorite! i loved the fact that she could sense all five elements and her own heroic way of saving ppl from bad events which she fortold! i just fell in love with this book from he fist sentence all the way to the last! you have to read this book and the one before it, marked!
Loved ITI loved this book. The characters are so different, but they make everything come together. The book keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next.
Fantastic!Excellent series! The second book is even better than the first! Can't wait to read the next one! Wonderful characters, especially the main girl!
Zoey is a slutI don't even know where to begin my review. Well, I just want to let the author know that they did a very poor job creating their main character. Zoey is a slut! She is attracted to most of the gorgeous male in the novel. I cannot stand her at all. She always hurt the people around her. When Loren came to the picture I almost drop the book but my curiosity got the best of me and decided to continue reading it. I think all the bad stuff they say about Aphrodite being a slut and hag from hell, those are the best description for Zoey.
so much better than marked!well i didnt exactly looove marked but this was so good i was crying when stevie rae died :(
but it was awesome!
FUN AND CREATIVEThe Casts bring a fun creative new twist to teenage melodrama with the House of Night. For anyone who loves vampires and fantasy.
Not really worth the readThe first book of the series was entertaining and had an interesting premise. This one was definitely not that great. It didnt evolve the characters much more, there seems to be a lot of winning and the story/writing is overly predictable.
A Guilty PleasureIs this book a literary masterpiece? The answer is an obvious "NO". However, it never claims to be.
For me the book is like a trashy reality show that you know you shouldn't be watching but just can't help yourself.
Reading these books is like reading the diary of your average, rebellious teen girl and her friends. The grammar is awful, the language is offensive, and there is sex but they are realistic. It's like they took vintage 90210 and threw in the Buffy/Willow factor to make for a series that you could not put down.
I say give it a chance...
even if you ARE desperate.....don't read thisfor an english teacher the author sure isnt creative and very good at using correct verbs. OK i hate english but even i know what is right and wrong and im not even a teacher! betrayed had too many sexual innuendos and sex-related scenes.P.C and Kristen are really anti christian. even the very idea of a Goddess is totally antichristian. well, maybe she wrote this for unchristian people, but at least dont encourage gayness and homosexualism because that is just plain WRONG and DISGUSTING!!! Of course now a days homos, sex, cussing, and pervertness are considered 'COOL'. yeah well people who like that kind of stuff are trashy.Im a teen and i think those stuff are so not classy. so if you reead this book go ahead and be trashy, disgusting, and a havea nice life.....
Great cant Put Down Book!Fast moving, has some parts that seem to drag a little bit but worth the bogging down to get to the good stuff. I love the twist this book takes with Zoey and her powers and friends and Erik. Again, I think the language and sexual innuedos were a little much, but doesn't ruin story. Jerking tears and laughing our loud will happen. Be ready. Stayed up to 4:00 am to finish it. Great way to continue to story on from book one. Good story and characters for a young adult genre.
Not bad for a $7 book.I got the book for 7 dollars after the reading the first one; so for the price and the fact that it was midly entertaining I give it 3 stars. My frustration with the 2nd book is that it takes a few chapters before you can really get into because she is forcing a recap of the 1st book to get anyone caught up. The characters can be annoying. I understand that the twins have a deep spiritual connection but I think the author could have found a cooler way of getting that point across than just having them complete each others sentences or repeating each other, she makes them look stupid.
Zoey is a little too perfect for my liking. She used any opportunity to call Aprodite a "ho". I kept thinking "enough already, we get it, you dont like her). I think the author forces too many of her points. Shes slightly preachy about her feelings on religion, and the fact that everyone should accpet gay people. It was cool to read at first but after about the 10th time it was mentioned in the book--I wanted to yell.
Overall the story line of the Vampyre school and the adventures I think are original. I am interested in following the series despite the flat characters and the cliches. I am just starting the 3rd book and I hope I dont get too anoyed with it to finish it.
Love/Hate Relationship with HoN Series...I swear my IQ dropped 10 points when I made the decision to read the second book in the House of Night series. There was very little merit in Marked but yet, I'll admit I have the whole set setting in a stack on my night stand. What gives?
Well I'll tell you. These books are FUN. They are fast paced, suspenseful, very entertaining and well, not to sound like a gum smacking cheerleader but "totally cool". It's sad sad sad because the writing is almost inexcusable- more specifically, the dialogue. It actually made me cringe in places, but I kept reading because I actually wanted to.
Zoey Redbird is the most gifted vampire fledgling the House of Night has ever seen. After she discovered that the Goddess Nyx had blessed her with an ability to not only call the five elements, but have them readily answer, it became apparent to students and faculty that she was destined to some day lead as High Priestess. Now Zoey is the leader of the Dark Daughters, an organization within the House of Night dedicated to the Goddess Nyx. While trying to adjust to her new role, and prepare for the upcoming full moon ritual, Zoey's new abilities are revealing things about the House of Night that make her wonder who's side the school is on. Local human boys are disappearing and someone is trying to make it seem like the House of Night, and the leader of the Dark Daughters, are involved.
Poor Zoey, trying to juggle phenomenal cosmic power, boys and adolescence all at the same time. Oooooh the angst!
I couldn't put this down! What is wrong with me!? I loved it. I had to know what was going to happen next- and SO much happened. It even had me bawling my eyes out at one point and then cheering when Zoey was able to verbally bitch smack her nemesis. Zoey's group of friends are just adorable, her boyfriends (all of them) are hot, and well....there's a cat in this one too.
I'm going to read the rest of them...as long as no one sees me do it.
Great Book for TeensMy 13 yr old daughter loves this new series she reads these books with enthusiasm and can't wait to get the next one in the series.
Betrayed Book ReviewSecond book was better than the first and I enjoyed the pace of this book more.
If you need purpose in your pathetic life, read this book!Okay, no matter who you are, this book is terrible! The only people who will like this book are the pathetic, lazy teens, who instead of making themselves better people, just blame all their problems on the fact that they are (insert your problem i.e. fat, ugly, whatever) and that this characteristic is what the people around them judge them on (which may or may not be true), instead of their rude attitudes. This author has no talent, instead relying on what people want to hear, not unlike another vampire novel... Not only does this author have bad grammar, and not a single creative, original thought (yes, this novel is VERY similar to another vampire novel that came out years before this one), she constantly inserts her sexual desires into her books (HELLO! "I'm not a slut!" Yet you've had sex with a teacher, and you're cheating on your 'boyfriend'. Is this a harem novel!?), she obviously hates Christianity. I emailed her once after I read a part in her book where the heroine gets a cross from her 'evil stepfather', and the popular phrase, "The reason for the season", is on it, and asked her whether or not her stepfather' religion was Christianity. She replied it wasn't but since after that there have been numerous accounts (please read book to learn more), and it's obvious this woman has been hurt and she's taking her prejudice out on her readers. Her characters have no character depth, all the amazing things happen to our heroine and her friends. I could go on forever. Basically, if you need to hear that you are more special than the people who are prettier and more popular than you, and that someday your dreams will come true while you sit on the couch and wait for it. Please, go on and read this book, I'd hate to think you might actually grow up!
Not badThis book isn't bad for being YA. I was pretty impressed but the boy struggles kinda get annoying. I wanted to say pick one and get over it. Age group 12-18
Better than MarkedI enjoyed Betrayed it showed good character development and story progression. It found it to be way better than Marked which I just found to be ok and I got Betrayed just to see if I even wanted to continue with this series and I'm happy to say that I wasn't dissapointed. The only problem that I have with this series is the lack of description and imagery especially when it comes to the people in the story. I feel like I can't even picture most of the characters in my head because the descrition is so vague.Overall though, I would recommend Betrayed it is a great step up from the first novel. I hope the improvement continues throughout the series.
Good Story, but so unbelievable. My problem with the first book in this series was that I liked it, but I could put it down for a few days and not be in agony that I couldn't get back and finish reading it. I love vampire stories, and have been known to not sleep and eat very little when I have a good book in my hand that I want to know the ending to. After reading the first book, I was like "okay this isn't going to be a set of books I spend the entire weekend just sitting down and reading." This book, just got more and more cliche and more of the writing just became so unrealistic (usually not a bad thing in a vampire story) that I just cannot even think of starting the third book anytime soon.
The lead character, Zoey, is the most special vampire that has ever been marked. Okay, fine with that in the first book. She took down her arch enemy at her new vampire high school. Okay, fine with that. She starts to feel sorry for her enemy, cliche, but still okay. Now her friends are all becoming special because they are friends with her, started to become too cliche. The head of the school has an evil side and Zoey starts to question if this High Priestess is good or not, have we hit too many cliches? Best friend 'dies' and Zoey gains even more special powers, I really start thinking there are too many cliches and this is just not even about vampires anymore. Her new enemy is now the head of the school, who she feels she can take down because the Godess has choosen her and believes in her. You lost me, you hit one to many cliches and without developing the vampire side of the story at the same time I have lost interest.
I have read the reviews about poor writing, grammatical errors, shallow characters, not really being a teen book. I figured I'll over look it, because when I first read the Vampire Diaries when they came out, they got the same types of reviews. I thought it might just be a few people who don't get that vampire stories are usually not 100% ground in our reality, which to me makes them fun to read. Like I said earlier, I love to read vampire stories and had hopes that this would be a good enough vampire story to make me over look a few things. I can't tell if they marketed it wrong and should be about witches, or the supernatural, or if it is just a boring read. The different way people become vampires in this series was the only interesting thing in it, but that happened in the beginning of book 1 and hasn't really been touched upon since.
Definite Cool FactorsThe first book in the House of Night series by P C. Cast and Kristin Cast is titled Marked. I started this series because my sister recommended it to me, describing it as a cross between the Harry Potter series and the Twilight series, which we both loved. Betrayed is the second book in the series, and I read it in about 3 days, carrying it around with me, like my oldest daughter's security blanket, to steal a minute whenever I could to read a paragraph or a page.
Since I didn't do a book review on the first book, I think a little background information might be useful here. The plotline of the House of Night series is about a 16-year-old girl, Zoey Redbird, who is marked to turn into a vampyre within the course of the next four years or die from this Change. When a person is Marked, they began attending- and living at - the nearest House of Night finishing school, which as you could have guessed, has classes at night. In the world of Zoey Redbird, vampyres are a natural part of the world, and famous people both past and present are named as vampyres throughout the series, a much-used name being William Shakespeare. Taking place in Tulsa, Oklahoma Zoey learns over the course of a month that she isn't just a normal fledgling, the term given to would-be vampyres, but an especially-powerful one, experiencing much that only full vampyres experience and even some things that no vampyre in existence has ever experienced.
In Betrayed, Zoey learns about the power of Imprinting - not unlike the Imprinting in the Twilight series - through her Imprint with her human boyfriend, Heath. This Imprint turns out to be very useful as she discovers what is killing humans in a fashion similar to the bites of a vampyre. Zoey's introduction into the life of a vampyre is learned through trial and error mostly, and she exercises her abilities instinctively as she is driven by the guidance of the vampyre race's female deity, Nyx.
This series has some obvious "cool" factors that make it very appropriate for the Young Adult genre, such as the facial and body tattoos that result from the Change, as well as attending school in the dead of night and sleeping all through the day. Vampyres are well-known for their beauty and artistic abilities, and fame and fortune seem to be a natural part of the life of a vampyre. Magic is also prevalent in the series, through the abilities of being able to control the elements of air, fire, water, earth, as well as the vague element spirit, and receiving visions. The male vampyres are often gifted with physical abilities such as strength and speed that come from their male deity Erebus.
What I specifically appreciate about the second book is how the other fledglings that Zoey befriends are given abilities as rewards for helping her. Zoey is not the only one that is all-powerful, and she actually needs her friends and their abilities to accomplish the tasks that Nyx gives to her. The romantic aspects of the book are pretty appealing too, what with the Vampyre Poet Laureate making very bold advances towards Zoey, only confusing her already conflicted dating life of one Imprinted human boyfriend and one fledgling boyfriend. The reader gets the sense that the events transpiring are building up to something on a grander scale, and that Zoey Redbird plays a key part in acting on Nyx's behalf, but the reader knows no more than Zoey herself does.
Great book!I got it on time and the condition was perfect. I'm very please with my order and the book was really good. Can't wait for the latest one to come out.
Betrayed or just Bored? This book picks up a month after Zoey Redbird started at the House of Night vampyre school. Zoey takes over the Dark Daughters, the "school council" for the fledglings. Her and her friends are learning there new roles all the while humans are being killed in Broken Arrow, Zoey's home town. It was thought that a vampyre is responsible for the deaths. Zoey uses her powers to save the day and battle evil. Bla Bla Bla...
Ugh, I wanted so much more from this book. Of course I finished it, but the only exciting part was when her BFF Stevie Ray ??? (gotta read it to get it). The book is transparent at best. There are no real surprises. I could figure out Nephret was bad in the first book, this book just solidified it. I can also see that the two boyfriends, human Heath and vampyre Eric will be a total drama fest. Heath bugs me, he is so annoying and I want to smack him down like a fly. Eric is better, seems hot and sexy, much better than the dopey football player. I still can't stand the boy drama! Are teens really like this? Was I really like that? Ugh! No wonder I never had a steady boy friend.
The other characters are ok, not great. I think the twins are terrible! There're not really twins, one's mocha colored and the other a pale blond. They ALWAYS call each other twin, it's the most annoying thing in the whole book. I can't stand it. I thought I would get use to it and I didn't. The token "gay" is Damien, he is sweet and likable. Although, his character is a no-it-all and that is annoying. He is always lecturing about proper vocabulary. Who actually does that!
The only real person I like is Aphrodite, she is cheeky and a major smart-***. (Keeping it PG). I want more of her and less of the twins and boy drama. Then again, I bet I would have loved this series at 16. I did like it, not love it, but enough to say it is worth the read (IF you like YA books).
I don't know how I feel about the Goddess Nynx. It's a little too far-fetched for me. I can accept it because it's a fiction and I would totally love the cool powers she gives. I especially want the tattoos, which would be awesome.
With all that said, I give it three Bran Stars.
Check out my web-site to see what a Bran Star is.....[...]
Mixed Feelings but still a fan..I first saw them on an interview on Rachel Ray and decided to give their series a try. She had paired up with her daughter to write them all and now that I've read all of them (not yet finished with the last series) I can see where her daughter comes to mind. The story or plot is very intriguing but the grammer and the teenage lingo is a nuisance. I honestly don't think teenagers have the word "poopie" in their vocabulary but I could be mistaken. At any rate, it kills the mood. But like I said the "idea" of the story is great about The Goddess and Kalona the fallen angel but when it came to finding out where Neferet and Kalona were hiding out on TWITTER?? Now come on...she could be a bit more creative then that. But I will always be a fan and plan on looking up more books by just PC Cast and skip over the ridiculous parts and continue on...they are addictig after all. :)
Entertaining sequelIn the second book, of the House of Night series, new vampyre fledgling Zoey Redbird develops a crush on poetry teacher Loren Blake, and thoughts of love interest Erik Night are pushed to the side as she copes with her bloodlust for human ex-boyfriend Heath.
She also struggles to re-define the exclusive prep soriority the Dark Daughters, helps with a police investigation of local murdered teens and copes with the loss of her best friend and confidante Stevie Rae who hasn't make it though the vampyre change. And, what's going on with spurned Aphrodite, whose visions are called into question by Zoey's mentor Neferet?
Betrayed is definitely setting up for a sequel with dark hints of an unpleasant destiny for those who don't make the change successfully (they seem to mutate into monsters much more consistent with what we'd think of as traditional vampyres.) Except for the teen characters discomfort with sexual situations (Zoey's continually worry is that she'll be thought of as a "ho") the pagan rituals seem well-researched and true to Celtic traditions. The juvenile slang, stretched believability for me however. Terms like "bullpoopie" used as a frequent curse word seemed oddly out of place. Do the clean-cut people of the Midwest really speak like this? Despite this, the group of vamp teens display a reasonable amount of maturity with the responsibilities entrusted to them. I suppose the overwhelming nature of their change would be enough to prevent anyone from taking advantage of the sudden freedoms they are given on the House of Night campus. Zoey is totally boy-crazy, but despite her multiple crushes she still doesn't feel ready to consumate a relationship. A love interest for her gay friend Damien is also briefly included.
DeliciousI purchased this book.
Betrayed, the second book starring Zoey Redbird, recently marked by the goddess of the night, Nyx, and destined for great things, starts off with a thick, back story heavy first chapter that's an example of the worst the Cast writing gets. Things appear shallow and skewed, with the misunderstood female-goddess-powered vampires facing off against the domineering, bone-headed male "People of Faith" (a cult of Christians) types. And with Zoey's super special, empowered friends railing against meanies, while themselves being judgmental and snobbish.
But don't stop there, because once the series and situation so far has been summed up the Casts move on to tell a completely different story.
Fresh off a victory over meanie, vampyre elitist Aphrodite, Zoey finds herself the leader of the elite House of Night school prep club/sorority the Dark Daughters and Sons. She immediately puts the people who helped her take the position from Aphrodite at her side as prefects as she struggles to make the club something more than the nasty, abusive thing it had become.
But Zoey doesn't know it all, and isn't exactly prepared to handle what Nyx starts to reveal to her. After much preparation Zoe's first Full Moon ceremony as Priestess in training begins to go well, with her friends all showing an affinity for an element that makes them solid choices for the role Zoey has put them in (and it makes Zoey's choice seem less like nepotism and more like foreshadowing, or even prophecy.)
But Fate--or something worse--takes Zoey's best friend and roommate from her when Stevie Rae collapses after the ceremony and appears to fall prey to a failed Change (when a Marked teen's body rejects the Change to a vampyre and instead, dies.) When Zoey's semi-stalker ex-boyfriend Heath vanishes soon after Zoey is shocked to be given a vision which shows her Stevie Rae is responsible. To save Heath Zoey must tear away another layer of the mystery surrounding the House of Night, which leads her to the only person who seems to believe her and maybe even knows what is going on--Aphrodite.
What could very well be taken as a cliché tale of super special (underestimated) teens proving to the world how much better than ordinary they are instead becomes something else. Again Zoey represents a girl struggling to find her own place in the world, and in herself, when the people around her seem determined to ruin her or rule her. When everyone else says her instincts are wrong Zoey is forced to follow them, or lose people she loves.
Furthermore this book introduces additional complexity by showing that Dark doesn't always mean evil and Light doesn't always mean good. Actions speak louder than compliments, familiar roles and even religious affinity.
After the initial chapter, religious and female power overtones are relaxed and worked better into the tale, even to the point of glancing off the idea that only women getting "favored" by one god is as unfair as only men being "favored" by another. Even Zoey's more annoying friends, Shaunee and Erin, are toned down while the plot is proceeding and take a stronger supporting, instead of agitating, role.
The plot as well is a nice mix elements that is similar to those seen in other well liked long running series, like the Harry Potter books. While there is, one can assume, one primary evil, it's minions are many, and unexpected (by Zoey anyway). And the solution is never as easy as pointing and declaring "There's the bad guy." Instead the characters must weave their way through their destined conflicts, which even include their differences with each other.
Zoey's voice keeps the darkness in check with wit, snark, a special kind of confidence, and determination. A good read for teens, and even adults still fighting with teen issues, Betrayed is a good, easy read that manages to keep some meat on its bones with out becoming either too heavy or too fluffy.
The house of Night seriesI've read the first four books in this series. (I'm 39 years old, they should really stop listing these books as "Young Adults", my friends love them too. They limit their readers that way.)
The only thing I didn't care for was that they explain in the next book too much of what happened in the previous one. I understand why they do it, but if people didn't read them in order thats their problem.
Good detailI am already on the 4th book in the series, so I kind of remember the 2nd book. But so far All the books in the series have had a good flow to them. And leaving me with the feelings of, wanting more. In the 2nd book the "Cast woman" seem to only scratch the surface of Zoey Rebird. I would not start reading this book, unless you have time to read all of the books. The House of Night Novels well suck you into their world.
AwesomeThis book series is amazing. There is some sexual content and some language. However, it is a truely well writen series.
Very good and captivating readI literally couldn't but this book down. I read it all the way through in one sitting. I really enjoy the relateablilty of the main character, as well as the incorporation of many Wiccan principles. Overall a great and very entertaining book.
Not Everything Is As It Seems for ZoeyWow, so much happened in Book 2. I won't give anything away, but there's a love triangle developing, a major character dies (sort of), a betrayal occurs, and friendships deepen. I just enjoyed every single page of this story. I like Heath's character and maybe it's because he loves Zoey unconditionally and not because of her powers, but I admit that tall, dark, and handsome Erik has his moments. I'd love to be surrounded by such wonderful friends as well. I'm even warming up to Aphrodite now and think that she can change her attitude. I know...shocking! I can't wait to read Book 3 and stay with this series until the end. A definite must read.
Great second novel in seriesThe second in the House of Night series follows our spectacular young vampire fledgling Zoey as she continues to discover that things aren't always as they seem.
The change from human to vampire is happening quickly for fledgling Zoey. She has been hand picked by the vampire goddess and put on a special secret mission. So secret in fact, that she hasn't totally figured it all out yet.
When teenagers from Zoeys past start disappearing, and dead fledglings start appearing in ghostly forms, Zoey puts two and two together and believes that the two may be linked. What she finds out is more awful than she ever could have imagined. Her trust is tested with everyone she knows, and even the people she least expected to be untrustworthy.
I like this series a lot. I took quite a lot of time reading this one, not sure why, it was a good book. I think it could have used a bit more action and a bit less angst, but what can I expect from a YA pick?
As I said before with the Marked review, the series website is outstanding. If you are a fan of the series, or thinking about starting the series, visit the website. Quite possibly one of the best series websites I have ever seen!
Great Rainy Day Read!I picked up the House of Night Series after absolutely loving Twilight. House of Night is different from twilight in that its not as focused on a single relationship but on Zoey's challenge in a whole new world when she finds out she is a vampire fledgling...and a unique one at that. Betrayed is a great quick read and will keep you hooked from beginning to end.
I felt Betrayed at the House of NightThese books keep blowing my mind !!!!!!! I love them. If you love Vampires then you will love Zoey Redbird and her friends at the HON.
Probably My favorite out of the SeriesI have to admit that this was by far one of my favorite books in the house of night series. I made the mistake of reading a little bit of chosen first because I thought it was the second one and quickly realized my mistake. However that didn't stop the book from being one of the best. Zoey has finally settled into the house of night and feels like she belongs somewhere. And of course we all know there would be no book if there are no more surprises in stored for her.
The book revolves around the mystery of teenagers disappearing and dying and all the clues point to the house of night. And from the first book we know that they have a peaceful existence with the humans. Not only that but like the book cover says when she needs a friend the most death strikes in the house of night. Even though I knew before hand who it was that died I actually shed some tears when it happened.
From the title of the book I could guess that someone near Zoey would betray her and that's exactly what happens. I won't give away who or how but I will say it took me a little bit by surprise.
My big problem with this book is there are so many repetitive parts. I am fine with some recaps because it helps if the books are read far apart. But this went above and beyond like reminders of who the main supporting characters are. I mean I already knew why the "twins" are called that even though they are not related but still the author felt the need to repeat the reason. I also knew who Damien was and yet again reminders were inserted. It could do with removing some of them.
Overall I enjoyed the book and the discoveries the characters go through although I think it could have used a little bit more of the people around Zoey.
review of "Betrayed " by PC Cast Book #2Good book ; continues to unfold Zoey Redbird's saga about fledging vampyres. Just wish she was not so fickled re: boys! 17 she may be, but she sure doesn't know her mind at all! She does have some committment issues!
The vendor service was fast and I exactly what I expecteed form the info given on Amazon! Good job!
Good seriesI wasn't sure I'd like this at first, but it's gotten me hooked. I've read all of them now and can't wait for the next one to come out.
Can't deny its interesting!"Betrayed" is the second House of Night novel in the series by PC & Kristen Cast. I gave "Marked" the first volume, a three star review when I read it last month. I was put off by the Anti-Christian stance as well as the overt situations and vulgar language. These three complaints still exist in "Betrayed". For YA novel, there is a fairly descriptive "rubbing" scene, and mentions of oral sex. The language appeared to be toned down somewhat this time around. I had also complained that the Goddess-celebrating scenes slowed things down. That was not the case in "Betrayed". Nothing slowed this book down. This was one great race to turn pages. "Betrayed" follows up where "Marked" left off. Zoe is now leader of the Dark Daughters and a high-priestess in training. She is planning the first ceremony under her leadership and making a new set of standards for the members of the group. She also finds herself involved with three men and must figure out her feelings for them. Then there are the disappearances of local human high school students. Zoe knows without question that they are dead. When her human ex-boyfriend Heath goes missing, the action kicks into overdrive as Zoe must try to save him. Zoe has relationship drama, faces personal tragedy, gains unlikely allies, and is betrayed by someone dear to her. I found this book was better written than the first story although Zoe's slangy still had me cringing occasionally. This series is still not likely appropriate for the younger teen age group, but I found it interesting and enjoyeable. I plan to read the next volume very soon.
"Darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always bring good"Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird is settling in well at the House of Night, a finishing school for young people undergoing the Change from human to vampyre. But for all the rollicking good times she has with her gang of friends and her crush on an assistant professor and vampyre poet visiting the school, she has started to discover that things in the House of Night are not what they seem. Her mentor has started to show signs that her kindliness may hide something more sinister, while her sworn enemy manages to earn a small amount of Zoey's sympathy. And when several human teenagers suddenly vanish and the police suspect some connection with the House of Night, she discovers she must use her talents to get to the bottom of what's going on -- at the risk of testing her new relationships.
I may be an older reader, but I love everything about this series: the characters, their complicated relationships toward each other (which goes beyond the nice girls/mean girls dualism into something more close to what happens in real life), the vampyre magick. I especially love how, in a weird way, the whole series addresses those tough issues of growing up and changing from a child to an adolescent to an adult, which can be just as weird and unsettling as becoming a vampyre would be: becoming your own person, stepping outside of the simpler ways one has known, testing one's boundaries and challenging one's limits.
loved it like the first!I read this book in a day or two. I love this series! It's as good as the first book. I love the characters, they are well written and you start to care about them. I would recommend to older teenagers (language and sexual content) and adults.
Learn to always tell the truthThis book lets you know that your actions even if you think they are for others own good will lead to the end you had already foreseen.
Improvement over "Marked", but still pretty badI thought that "Betrayed" was a small improvement over "Marked".
I found myself rolling my eyes much less as I read the second book. However, it's still really poorly written. I think if you made it through the first book and found even the slightest bit of satisfaction, it might be worth reading book two. Entertainment is entertainment, even if it's awful.
not receivedI still have not received this item after ordering the item almost a month ago. I have never had any issues before ordering with Amazon until now in terms of shipments getting to me.
#2 House of NightGood book. Following the first in the series this book follows nicely. It brings the story along and kept me reading.
A great second book in the trilogyThe first book was good but this one was great because you felt tons of different emotions ...and change your view on a variety of different characters. I read the book in 2 days ...and had a hard tiem putting it down. I can't wait to read the next book to see what happens.
Fascinating Fast-Paced Vampire Book (Book 2 In Series)An important notice from the reviewer: Many times people read reviews or the back of the book to see what its all about. However, thats why so many complain that everything coming up in the series is obvious. The whole plot is written on the back cover, and I hate when publishers do that, because then the reader knows everything so the book may loose their interest, or oftentimes the plot is slightly different from what the book says it is so people are 'disappointed'. Don't read any reviews or back covers, just read this review, as I try not to have spoilers that ruin the book for you other then crucial info you need to know to see if it is your type of book.
The Genre: Horror/Action/Romance
Preferable Age: 13-21 (It contains content innappropriate for kids under 13)
Pace of book*: Fast-Pace
Creativness of book:** 7/10
Character Dimension/Quality:** 8/10
A good read if you are interested in: Vampires, Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance.
*Different people like differently paced books, so I put this up so you can see if it is your type.
**5/10 is being the average, so both sections are better then average.
Overall, a better-then-average fast-paced vampire book that is the 2nd sequal to the series 'House of Night'.
A fantastic way to contiuneBetrayed is the second thrilling book in The House of Night Series. I was hopelessly hooked on this series by the end of Marked, but Betrayed has only served to pull me into the series even more. We join up with Zoey and her friends again a month after we last left her in Marked. She has settled into her school nicely, and is now fretting about the other issues that seem to follow her around wherever she goes. The biggest one seems to be boy troubles.
Zoey Redbird who was so worried about fitting in at her new school has more boys than she can handle. I can't help but laugh a little bit, because on top of the usual Teenage Hormones poor Zoey also has to deal with the hormone changes that happen when you're a Vampyre. It would seem (and this goes with other books as well) they are very Sexual creatures, and much of that drive is connected to their blood lust and drinking. So poor Zoey finds herself Imprinted with her ex Heath, very loving towards her current Beau the handsome and talented Erik Night, and a teacher Loren Blake the talented vampire Laurent. Oh my!
As if that wasn't bad enough Zoey will face trials like she hasn't before, she looses a good friend, and somebody is killing are teenagers. The killings to crop up and play a bit of a part of the story line, but over all they are background to Zoeys loss, as well as her trials with the boys in her life and of course changing the Dark Daughters. The final blow to poor Zoey comes when someone she looks up to and nearly worships becomes something else. From light to dark. It is a powerful blow, but Zoey and her Goddess given gifts find away to keep going.
Betrayed is an emotionally charged read and I found myself crying as I read it. But I also could not put the book down as it was so good. Some of the themes are a little more adult than I would expect for a young adult novel, but nothing to over the top. Just beware you should probably pre read it before you let your young adult read it. It is a great second book in the series.
Great Book... you will enjoyThis is a great book to read and follows with the series perfectly. It will not let you down
Great series!I absolutley love this series of books. This it the 2nd book the series abouta girl who gets marked to become a vampire, and all the problems sh incures with the life changing, and boyfriend and family problems. Not to mention coming into her powers and fighting off evil
Not yet sureI have read every book in this series so far. And I so far think that Zoey Redbird is a caring yet shelfish charter. The series it self is interesting to say the least I however dont know about the vampires also being witches thing going on there.... I will finish out the series like I do any series that I start but it will not be on my top series to recommend. also I wish that they would make the books longer. I mean I understand that they are geared for young adults but y.a. have read thick books like Twilight series, Vampire Diaries, Harry Potter, ect. The house of night books could have easily been combined from soon to be 6 books into 3 and saved the readers the headached of trying to jump from book to book.
Okay book, better than the firstI bought this series because I was finished with the Twilight Saga and wanted another vampire series. While this series was very different than Twilight, it also wasn't as good, although the second book was better than the first. It was worth reading, although I probably won't read the book again. This series is written in a juvenile writing style, with silly phrases including "(please-we don't call her a hag from hell for nothing)" and "(hello-I watch Nickelodeon reruns like everyone else)" in parenthesis throughout the whole book, but despite the emphasis on the fact that Zoey Redbird and her friends are kids, the book contains very adult language and situations, including drug use, sexual situations, bloodlust, and intense swearing. The book should have been written with appropriate language and situations, or written in a more adult writing style. The concept, although, is quite original and not like anything I've read, but it is definately not a series that I would allow my 12 year old child to read. The vampires are unique, not blood-thirsty monsters like many other vampire books I've read. These vampires seem to follow more of a wiccan tradition, worshiping a Goddess, preforming magic, casting circles and calling the elements. Overall, an ok book.
My review says 4 stars, but I would only rate this book and series as 3 stars. I hope my thoughts are helpful.
BetrayedI started reading this series with a sense of the unknown. I knew little of this author. But I am pleasantly surprised. Betrayed is well written, and fast paced. I was not able to put any of the series down, I read most of it in five days. I love the characters, I have sensed loss, sadness ,humor and happiness throughout the book. I love it and look forward to more.
My favorite book of the House of Night. In this book something happens to one of Zoey's closest friends at the House of Night. Zoey deals the best she can.
Maybe I wasn't on my A game but this book totally shocked me. It was emotional and very entertaining. I loved it.
I hate this series...I couldn't finish this book. About page ninety I stopped because I just couldn't put up with it anymore. To be clear I read the first book, which was alright. Not great, not good but alright. I started the 2nd one with low hopes and lo and behold! I was right. It sucked.
Mainly the reaons why I couldn't finish it were:
Zoey: Zoey as a character is so annoying and hypocritical. She just bugged me so much that in the end that was really why I couldn't finish it.
Her friends: I wouldn't even really call them friends. Mostly they were people she talked to sometimes and laughed with. But the ones who I really want to be killed off were the two girls (don't even remember their names) who kept calling themselves "twin". Grrrr....
That was about it. Honestly I can't believe that this series is up to number 5...
Great young adult paranormal with strong heroineThis was another great journey into the lives of the teenagers at the House of Night. I am in total love with this world. The school is amazing, the characters witty and strong and the second installment in this series I believe is stronger than the first (and I really liked the first one as well!) Come along and learn more about Zoey, Stevie Rae, Erin, Shaunee, Damien, Erik and Aphrodite, along with some other new faces. The friendships are strong still and honor is important among the group of friends, they watch out for each other and others they deem important (which is most everyone but Aphrodite). More comes to light in this book about the House of Night and the characters, but I don't want to say too much and give something away. Just know if you enjoyed the first one, you will enjoy this one. I kind of knew where the whole thing was going, but didn't expect the way it got there, so it was a fun and interesting read. It kept me reading and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Now I can't wait to see what happens in Chosen.
If you enjoy a strong teen heroine who still has some self-doubt (as we all do) then you will enjoy this series and this book. The Casts make a great team for these books and I can see why they are such a hit!
Its okWell I thought this book was "ok". It was better than the first, alot more intimate but still lacked alot for me. There was alot of recapping from the first book, I understand you have to do that-but it was way too much! All in all, it was good enough to start chosen, which I think will be better.
Great SeriesI was looking for more vampire series books to read when I came across the House of Night series. At first, I was a little annoyed with the mindset tone, but now that I've gotten further into the series, it really makes it. The concept of vampires in this series and the society around them is increadibly unique and very enjoyable. There is no blood exchange to make a childe and while there is blood drinking, it isn't really off of people. There is an interesting mix of mythology and modern world that is perfectly seemless. I have really enjoyed this series.
Better than book 1I took a long break from this series I guess because it just did not grab me as much as the Vampire Academy series did. I finally got book 2 in from the library and am happy I did. This one definitely drew me in more so than Marked and I cannot wait to get book 3 to find out what happens. Zoey was getting on my nerves a little with her flirting with Loren, being wishy washy about her relationship with Erik and then the whole imprinting thing with Heath. I was totally bummed out over what happens to Stevie Rae but I'm still holding out hope for a happy ending there. If you have not read past book 1 in this series I would suggest getting back into it as the story is really starting to pick up.
fantasticThis is volume 2 in the series and my best suggestion is go ahead and order all the books and get it over with. Now about this book ---read my review of Marked and just buy all the books OK?
I'm Truly Torn!!Honestly, I can't put this series down. It is haunting and I will have finished all 4 books in this one week... that's how good they are (by the way, I have a life but I made time to read!).
On the other hand, I find that this book was very predictable. I really predicted 90% of the events and nothing was really a shocker.... and yet I have every intention of reading the next book.... I continue to be intrigued even what I "saw that coming". I try to keep in mind this is a young adult book so it was most likely written for the younger crowd. I'm only 22 but maybe I'm just over the age hump? Anyways, there's something about it that this book that is juvenile while at the same time it is completely mature. I can't put my finger on it!!
Betrayal, death, and a few boyfriends make this story progress nicely.Marked, Book One, introduced you to the main characters. Zoey, now the leader of the Dark Daughters has a couple of Boyfriends & a great group of friends - seems like a happy ending but wait...that is chapter one. As the plot moves along we discover that human's in Zoey's life don't have a long life expectancy. Betrayed, is a title that tells all - the end well I won't tell you that secret but, it is worth reading.
loving this seriesAfter reading Marked (which was also fabulous) I found myself wanting to know what happens next in the lives of these special teenagers. It was strange because every time Zoey cast a circle I felt my own spirit calling to the elements. I believe this series has the potential to awaken the calling from within a lot of people. Well done.
BetrayedBecause of Twighlight this series was recommended to me. I really enjoyed reading the first book and looked forward to reading Betrayed. It gave a slightly different view on how vampires were made. I liked the character Zoey and the way she's being developed.
In this book Zoey under goes many trials she becomes leader of the dark sisters and she has a boy friend things seem to be going well for her she learns though that she has been betrayed by one she thought as a friend and an enemy becomes a friend. Zoey must find the courage to face this betrayal and help her human friends.
Pretty GoodIt's a good series. I've enjoyed it, and I'm going to get the fifth book today!
Alternative to TwilightI am probably like many of the House of Night readers, just getting over Twilight. I thought i would never find another series again that i liked as much at the one. Then Amazon suggested this series so i tried, and it is fantastic.
Betrayed is a great book with a twist at the end, it leaves you wanting the next book. My suggestion to anyone is buy #2 and #3 together.
Betrayed review. As if life for fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird wasn't already hard enough, things just got a little bit harder. As soon as she starts settling in at the House of Night, human teenagers are being killed. Teenagers that Zoey knows. Then a death of someone close to Zoey reveals a secret that leaves her feeling Betrayed.
I really enjoyed this sequel to Marked. The series is a light read to me and very enjoyable. I see a lot of people mentioning Twilight in their reviews and I don't think that's really fair. Are all vampire books going to be compared to the Twilight series? I don't think they should be, and I say that as a Twilight fan. I actually find the writing in the House of Night series to be better. And not to mention that the story lines are completely different.
I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes light, fun reads, and not to mention vampires. Just don't go into it expecting it to be the next Great American Novel, and you should be fine.
Betrayed, but by whom?Betrayed (House of Night, Book 2)
The fast paced story of Marked continues. This book takes place over a very short time period like the first one, and a person Zoey admires is not what they seem to be. Human teens die, who is to blame?
Won't ruin any plot surprises here, but this series is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Reading!
great seriesThis is a great series. They're very entertaining, hard to put down. Arrived quickly and packaged nicely.
GREAT BOOK!!!!!!I loved the book. It came when they said it would. Plus I just finished what there is of the series. I cant wait for the new one!!!!!!
I love the House of Night!I found out about P.C. Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast through the amazing website/blog called Free Book Friday, that is founded by author Jessica Brody. I'm so glad that I read and even heard the wonderful podcast interview of Jessica and P.C. talking about her House of Night series. Listening to the podcast about how P.C. and her daughter Kristin came to write the Young Adult series about vampires and finishing school. I had to find out more about this series and to get them immediately so I can read them all. I also recommend that you all listen to it also so you can decide for yourselves if you agree with me about this series and P.C. Cast's inspiration for writing them with her daughter. I'm glad that I bought these books because it didn't disappoint and now I'm a fan of the House of Night series and I look forward to all the future novels in this series. Especially since I found on her website that the next book in the series called Hunted is coming out in March 2009, which is 2 months away.
Betrayed is I'm guessing a couple of days or even hours just after the first book Marked finished and so there are some new problems and excitement ahead for our Zoey Redbird. Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird has managed to settle in at the House of Night finishing school with some very cool and loyal friends to back her up in all things. She has a roomie and best friend named Stevie Rae who is a country girl at heart but who is everything she could ever want in a best friend. She finally feels like she belongs, even gets chosen as the Leader of the Dark Daughters, which in the last book was being managed by the diva bitch of the school. Best of all, she actually has a boyfriend...or two, such as human ex-boyfriend from the last book named Heath and fellow vampyre fledgling Eric Night. Then the unthinkable happens: Human teenagers are being killed, and all the evidence points to the House of Night. Which seems very suspicious to Zoey and that gets her really worried for Heath because he is a jock who placed against the boy teenagers who were jocks for their rival team.
While danger stalks the humans from Zoey's old life, she begins to realize that the very powers that make her so unique might also threaten those she loves. Then, when she needs her new friends the most, death strikes the House of Night, and Zoey must find the courage to face a betrayal that could break her heart, her soul, and jeopardize the very fabric of her world. Zoey goes through so much in this book only have a couple of weeks after being marked as a vampire fledgling. I was hooked with the first book and reading this one just sunk me further in to the world of Zoey Redbird and her vampyre fledgling friends. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book because from the ending of this book Zoey's life is just going to get more interesting and harder for her to handle.
Excellent SeriesI am so addicted to this series! I was sucked into it from the beginning! I love Zoey, and her adventures and can't wait to find out what happens next. Excellent excellent book!
Reading ReviewI have to say that I totally love the story. It is quiet interesting and light to read. My mother language is Spanish an I usually like to read novels in the original language they are written and I have too say even for those who can't speak very well English this is a very light written story that captures the reader and I have to agree with the website it is highly addictive.
WONDERFULIt is a very good YA Vampire Series with a different twist then most of the others. Read the first went and bought the rest of the series, and have recommended it to so many after my god daughters and i read it that the local library now has three copies of each.
great bookthis is a great book. i liked it better than the first book marked. it has alot more action than the first book. i hope eric and zoey stay together.
Good BookI enjoyed Betrayed, but the book became frustrating at times. The good part is you get to see a different side of little miss goody two shoes Zoey Redbird. You can relate to her.
AmazingThis series is truly wonderful. I'm a sucker for a good series and this totally fits the bill. If you are looking for a book that combines love, action and laughter this is the series for you.
Must-ReadBetrayed is a must-read for fans of the first House of Night novel. Readers will gulp down this book as Zoey's problems become more complicated and personal, including suspicions of a character she previously trusted; mysterious, vamp-like murders of humans she knows; conflicting emotions for three different guys; as well as the further unraveling of plotlines introduced in the first book. Zoey becomes more assured of herself and her abilities, a strength she'll need when the book takes a dark turn that's both shocking and heart-wrenching. Other characters, particularly Aphrodite, begin to have more dimension as well. Darker and more suspenseful than the first, Betrayed is an intricate, breathtaking tale that not only sustains the addiction created by the first book, but increases it, making it impossible for readers to not want to find out what else will happen to Zoey and the entire House of Night cast.
It just keeps getting better!!!This book is really good if you liked Twilight then you will love the House of Nights Collection. These two ladies really know how to keep you going in these books they are awesome and I can't wait for Hunted to come out!!!! These are a must read collection Love Them!!!
If a better book has ever been written, I've yet to hear about. This book is amazing. By making vampires an actual part of society was really putting it out there. The incorporation of wicken religion was incredible. If I have one complaint it's that Hunted isn't out yet. I CAN'T WAIT 'TILL MARCH!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!! Anyway, great book. Divine series. Twilight can go to Hell. *_*
Downhill...I really liked the first book in the series "Marked" that I borrowed from a friend. I liked how open and optimistic the ending was.
I picked up this book from the library two days later, and was really disappointed. The main character Zoey went from being a great, independent main character to a selfish, whore that was never satisfied with any situation. I hope the next book doesn't further de-volve her because I'm really starting to hate her.
easy readgreat book for an easy entertaining read, now I am looking forward to more :)
ExcitingThis book was delicious... I really like the second part to Marked. I wasnt as crazy about the ending but I'm hoping in book 3 that it will make sense.
Awesome. If you like vampire stories, this series rocks. Right on up there with the Twilight Series. Maybe not quite as good, but great reading. Highly recommended. Not just for teenagers. Good reading for older folks, too.
Great Series for teens and up!Betrayed is book 2 of the "House of Night" series. It is freshly written about teens that become marked to potentially become vampires. This is not your run of the mill series about vampires. It is more about teens who feel they don't fit in either at school or at home and have not had someone to help them realize their full potential in life. The metaphor of "the change" from human to vampire is subtle but easily grasped by teens that everyone has great potential even if they may not see it at a point in time of their life. The series is full of wonderful characters both good and evil and some who may have lived a life of evil and truly want to change if only someone showed them they could. There is great light comedy throughout and perfectly used when things get too serious. I would highly recommend this book for mothers and daughters to read and talk about. While it is completely entertaining you can't help but see the underlying messages which are all positive!
Mediocre writing, somewhat engaging plotThis is the 2nd book in the House of Night series by the Casts. It follows in the same vein as the 1st book. The writing is mediocre but the plot is fairly engrossing.
Zoey has only been at the House of Night for a little while yet she is taking over the most prestigious group in the school; the Dark Daughters and Sons. While she struggles to figure out how to make this group a positive one, she is still being haunted by vampire ghosts. She is starting to think things are not what they seem and something deeper and darker may be happening at school. Then there is her ex-boyfriend Heath to deal with and a super-hottie vampire that seems to have an attraction to Zoey; of course she is supposedly dating the drop-dead fledgling Erik, but how is Zoey to deal with all the love problems and the more life threatening ones?
This book just isn't written that well, and neither was the previous one. There is lots of teenage drama and a fair amount of action. Despite the poor writing the story is engaging and interesting to read. I really find myself wondering what will happen to Zoey next. Some of the drama with her boyfriends gets bit old and some of the plot is pretty predictable. Still, it kept my attention so I guess it must be an okay book.
Will I read the next one? Again, maybe if I can find it somewhere for cheap, used.

Good sequel...Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is adjusting to her new life as a vampyre fledging at the House of Night. She's also learning the ropes on being a nurturing leader of the Dark Daughters. She is still dealing with Aphrodite, her biggest competitor and nemesis at the academy, but she soon learns that there is more to this rogue teen than meets the eye. However, things take a turn for the worse when a couple of football players from her old high school turn out dead. Who could be causing this? It is rumored that they are vampire killings, but neither Zoey nor her friends would do such a thing. If that wasn't bad enough, Zoey is happy with her boyfriend Erik, but is drawn to her ex-boyfriend Heath and intrigued with a hottie teacher with a knack for haiku. Oh, and is Neferet -- Zoey's beautiful and wise mentor -- all she appears to be? And what is happening to Stevie Ray, Zoey's best friend? Someone very close to Zoey will betray her. As the leader of the Dark Daughters, she will have to handle the situation on her own...
Betrayed, like Marked, is a dark and compelling teen paranormal novel. Zoey is a believable character, and her friends -- with the possible exception of the very caricatured "twins," Erin and Shaunee -- are three-dimensional and wonderful. The story takes a few steps away from the storyline in Marked. The most noticeable one is Erik as the main male character. Somehow it seems that the story will shift more toward Loren's direction as Zoey's possible male lead in her life. He does sound pretty hot, though the older teacher thing kind of creeps me out in a teen novel, even if it's one centered on vampires. I have no attachment to any of the male characters so far, so this is sort of a weak link for me in this series. The twists and turns are interesting, but I'm not thrilled with the cliffhanger type of ending. I do look forward to reading Chosen, but I probably won't crack it open for a while. If you're looking for a compelling YA vampire series (especially now that Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series is coming to an end), then this one's worth a try.
More of the house of night. In the second book Zoey has finally settled in at The House of Night. She's got great friends, a boyfriend and she's the new leader of the school's top group. But there's something strange going on, she's seeing old students; students whose bodies rejected the change into becoming a vampire and are supposed to be dead. They don't look like they use to either, they're all pale white, their eyes glow red, nails are like claws and they smell like death. One of the new "ghosts" as she thought they were is her best friend at school, what's going on and who's behind it.
Loved this one as much as Marked and am looking forward to Chosen in March. Cried a little during the book, but it is well worth the read.
Getting betterThis series is getting better with each book. This book takes some twist which really get you caught up in the books heroines life. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
The Compulsive Reader's ReviewsEven after her first month as a fledgling at The House of Night, Zoey Redbird's life still is as fast paced and hectic as ever. As the new leader of the Dark Daughters, she's responsible for turning it into a respectable and admirable club. Also, she seems to find herself with two boyfriends...with another guy sending her some mixed signals. On top of all of that, Zoey has been seeing some dark and mysterious creatures on the east wall. She wonders if it's all a trick of the mind, until human teenagers start disappearing...and winding up dead. Zoey will have to start facing the facts, especially after a shocking death in their midst reveals that what she has seen is no figment of her imagination...and what's truly horrifying is the identity of the person behind it all.
Betrayed picks up on all the suspense and thrill right where Marked left off. Full of twists and turns that flow fluidly and a continuation of excellent character development, Betrayed reveals more sinister plots and dastardly deeds that will leave readers reeling. The many normal teenager issues and feelings are melded with the supernatural happenings to create an adventurous and believable story. Though the world in which Zoey lives is unfamiliar, the Casts make the reader right at home with their smooth and inimitable writing style.
2 for 2This might have been my favorite book of the series (as I have read the first 3 so far). It definatley flows better in this book, and although it ends with a lot left unanswered (have your book 3 handy) you end up feeling better about the characters.
Betrayed, book 2In the second book Zoey has finally settled in at The House of Night. She's got great friends, a boyfriend and she's the new leader of the school's top group. Can't wait to read the next oneI have really enjoyed this world and this book was not a let down. The characters are interesting and I look forward to getting to know them better.
Enchanting!Another great addition to the series. It defines the characters to who they really are and their stand point in the story. The Cast Ladies know what there doing. This and Twilight (of course) are the only series about vampires worth reading (so far) in my opinion. It will have you hooked from the very begining only to have you swimming with thirst for more.
Definitely worth reading!
Infatuating.Betrayed was one of the best books I've read so far this year. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it! If you've ever read a Gossip Girl book or a simple vampire flick..This is the best of both worlds. The characters are very well developed and there's never a dull moment between them. Even their pets have a unique personality! The plot is over the span of a couple weeks, but it flies right by. It's fast paced and filled twists and turns. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. :)
excellent (2nd in the series)Betrayed is the second book in the House of Night series and it is good. Zoey Redbird has to face tough choices and face what she can and can not reveal to her friends. And you will be surprised at who becomes her enemy and who becomes her allies.
Beyond ExpectationsThis book went beyond my expectations. It is just as good, if not better, than Marked. I seriously loved it and can't wait for Chosen to show up on my front door. I'll be adgitated all day just waiting for it.
Best in House of Night Series--So Far...Betrayed is 2nd in the House of Night Series. It's my favorite, so far. I'm looking forward to Chosen, coming out in March!! This book is worth your money & worth your time reading! I recommend this book to any 13+.
Others I recommend: Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer (5/5), Gemma Doyle Series by Libba Bray (4.5/5), Through a Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb (4/5) and The Blue Bloods Series by Melissa De La Cruz (3.5/5)
BetrayedI loved this book. It is a very good sequal. It is worth reading. Loved It.......
Addictive vampire taleZoey is starting to feel like she belongs at the House of Night with her new friends and Erik, her hot new boyfriend. But then the unthinkable happens. Human teens are being killed and all the evidence points to vampyres. Zoey finds out that the very powers that make her unique might also threaten those she's loves. When she needs her friends the most, death strikes the House of Night. Zoey must find the courage to face a betrayal that could break her heart and jeopardize her world.
The House of Night series is like addictive candy. Once you start to read the story, you can't put the book down.
Vampyres are not the cliche monsters of a Dracula tale. They don't burn up in sunlight(though the sun does bother them), have fangs, or die with a stake in the heart.
I really liked how Zoey shows her vulnerabilities--how she still cares for her human ex-boyfriend, Heath, how she refuses to see the bad in one of her friends, and her struggles to fight back against something that she knows is wrong. The authors do a great job portraying teen fledglings. I can't wait to read the next book, CHOSEN, that comes out in March.
The Cast's have done it again!I loved this book!!!!I was kinda worried that they wouldn't be able to carry the characters in the same manner that they did in the first book Marked, but they pulled it off and then some. This is the first book in along time that actually made me tear up in the middle of the story. I was able to relate to each and every character in some shape way. I love how they continously made Zoey (and through Zoey, her friends as well) grow and mature. I can't wait for Chosen to come out.
Great New Entry In The House Of Night Series!I loved the first book in this series and the second definitely diidn't disappoint. Just a warning: there is one extremely tear-inducing moment though. That said, Zoey Redbird is coming to terms with her new life and evolving powers. She also has some complications popping up in her personal life in the form of three men. If I had one complaint about this book it would be that there isn't enough Eric in it. He's off at a Shakespeare competition, so he doesn't come back until nearly the end of the book. As the title suggests Zoe discovers that someone close to her is not what they appear to be. She also finds an ally in an old enemy. As with the first book in this series, "Marked", I would highly recommend this to both young adults as well as adult lovers of paranormal fiction. The third book in the series, "Chosen" is coming out in early 2008.
