Jerome R. Corsi
Mr. Corsi is the author of several books, including "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry" (along with John O'Neill), "Black Gold Stranglehold: The Myth of Scarcity and the Politics of Oil" (along with Craig R. Smith), "Atomic Iran: How the Terrorist Regime Bought the Bomb and American Politicians," and most recently, "Minutemen: The Battle to Secure America's Borders."

And here he looks into Barack Obama's history, what little there is, and highlights how Obama's current rhetoric is hardly in synch with this man's past. As one of the most liberal US Senators and one who has been part of a "church" that seems more anti-American or more interested in wallowing in black resentment than worshiping God, Dr. Corsi isn't the only one wondering who Senator Obama really is. Obama's life is an interesting one, full of a number of achievements, but it is one that raises a number of questions about this man who is not far from occupying the Oval Office. In many ways, Senator Obama is an unknown quantity, well he is unknown for those who aren't interested in knowing anything about him. For some his rhetoric is more important than his deeds, beliefs, inclinations, history. Others who are interested in the latter would find this book by Dr. Corsi worthwhile, to see what an Obama White House might mean. Cheers

5 stars A breath of fresh air in the land of Obamafever

Corsi makes some interesting points in this investigation. While I think that Obama's ties to more radical Islamists is a bit overboard, I don't think Corsi even scratched the surface on how quickly and smoothly Obama dovetailed his way into the most corrupt political machine in the country. It cant be stressed enough that the intolerably corrupt Illinois State Senate leader Emil Jones is the biggest reason Obama is a US senator. His ties to Tony Rezko are fairly well known, even if the press does all it can to give Obama cover on this, and Corsi devotes a good deal of time cutting through the spin of Obama's "boneheaded" friendship.

This is not a fair and impartial take on the Obama narrative that Axlerod has built, but it's a good balance to the puff pieces and near idolatry that passes as journalism in the NY Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post and the Boston Globe (just to name a few).

This book is really hard to read for a person who doesn't have strong opinions about Obama. The author makes many many vague and hard-to-believe points without much evidence -- the target seems to be people who have decided to dislike Obama and are looking for some reasons to really hate him. It'll also surely provide outrage material for the pro-Obama camp.

If you are truly undecided about Obama, this book is not for you. It is for hard-core partisans. You'll find it hard to believe much of it and will not understand why the author is harping on certain points. You'll be much better off reading about his positions in respectable news sources.

Whether you support McCain or Obama, this book is complete junk. We voters deserve to get the objective truth about our candidates, so we can make the best possible choice for President in November. However, this book makes absolutely no attempt to be objective in any way, it is a low-class smear job masquerading as journalism. Do your homework voters, and research both candidates. But don't waste your time or money on trash like this. Oh, and btw, I'm a former republican who is appalled at what has happened to the values of that party.

1 stars If it's in print it must be true......right?

This book is a blatent attempt to discredit Barack Obama, the author has made no bones about that. By simply stating "facts" in this book it will lead many to believe that what is printed is true. How many people will actually go and do the research to prove otherwise? That's all the author is hoping for. America, you're smarter than that I hope and will take this book for what it is, one man's opinion of a presidental nominee that he doesn't like.

1 stars Pure Vomit

Mary Matalin should be ashamed of herself for publishing this book. This is just reprehensible and irresponsible garbage cobbled together to scare voters away from Obama. (Gee, who'da thunk it, right?) I mean, Corsi is still pushing the idea of "Obama the Muslim," while simultaneously playing up his ties to Obama's former church in Chicago? So which is it, he's a "dangerous" Muslim or a "hateful" Christian? Hey, when you're writing fiction, it can be BOTH! Corsi commits factual errors, such as when he details a Rev. Wright speech and says Obama was present for it, when he known to be hundreds of miles away, in Miami, at the time. Details, details! Corsi says Obama has never publicly stated that he stopped using the drugs that he experimented with as a teenager, when in fact that is something he has spoken about often. Corsi makes it sound like Obama could have been using drugs right up to the present, which is just intellectually dishonest.

In point of fact, this book is mostly conjecture and fear-mongering. Ohhhh, the scary bogey-man! This book can ONLY appeal to those who have some weird irrational fear of Obama. If you need some bizarre conspiracy theorist to make you feel better, waste your money as you see fit.

5 stars Good to know the candidates

I say that its good to know the candidates. And with the several controversial figures that have surrounded this candidate thus far, as a voter it is likely a good idea to know who you are voting for. Worse comes to worse, you don't learn anything new. But on the other hand, you might get to know something good or bad about the candidate that may influence your voting decision.

This author has proven able to perform compelling research in the past, and this time it appears he has yet again.

This is a book that every American must read. If one cares about truth and justice, especially when it comes to something as important as our Homeland, this book is a must read. It's informative and accurately documented. I am shocked that the press did not picked up on the revealing facts, and ways that the people are being manipulated in this country. Plus, it's easy reading. Thanks Corsi

UNFIT FOR PUBLICATION: Setting the Record Straight on the Lies in Jerome
Corsi's "The Obama Nation"

Once again, bigoted fringe author Jerome Corsi is trying to make money off of an
election, spinning garbage as journalism and relying on the right-wing echo chamber to
pump up sales. Make no mistake: "The Obama Nation: is nothing but rehashed lies.

The allegations: rehashed lies

Corsi's falsehoods about Barack Obama have been discredited by numerous news
organizations, which have questioned his "scholarship," his conclusions, and his
ideological bent. This report will take you through the allegations point by point. Despite
Corsi's high opinion of his own scholarly abilities--he childishly touts the number of
footnotes it contains, for example--he gets many of even the most basic facts wrong, like
the year the Obamas got married.

As you might expect from the book's shoddy foundation, many of its claims are also
completely false. The Obama's never gave a million dollars to a Kenyan politician.
Obama has no secret plan to destroy the military. Obama has regularly shared many of
the facts about his family that Corsi claims he has covered up.

The author: a discredited, fringe bigot

Of course, the lies in "The Obama Nation" almost pale in comparison to the bizarre,
conspiratorial views that Jerome Corsi has advocated in his broader work. He believes
that President Bush is trying to merge the United states with Mexico and Canada. He
believes that there is a literally unending supply of oil beneath the ground. And in
perhaps the gravest sign that his views can't be trusted, he alleges a government cover-up
of the 9/11 attacks and denies that airplanes were to blame for the towers' collapse.

And it doesn't stop there. Corsi has penned a litany of bigoted, hateful comments--

1 stars This Author Has Already Been Discredited - Tabloid Writer

2008-08-14     145 of 296 found this review helpful

The Presidential election is just around the corner and now we are subjected to a "writer" who is most famous for writing falsehoods about politicians. This 'author' has already been discredited by previous writings of falsehoods and 'fiction', most notably his book on John Kerry. Problem is, this piece of work presents nothing interesting, factual or new. Its not even fun, freaky, fake facts! Actually, it is so full of falsehood; the Obama campaign has been able to simply disprove every single negative allegation very easily. However, some people will believe anything they read, and in America, we all know, that can be a problem for those who trust.

Obama's campaign says the book is full of factual inaccuracies that include: the wrong date for the Obamas' marriage, that Obama is currently using drugs like marijuana and cocaine, that Obama was raised with an Islamic education, that Obama wants to weaken the military and more easily disproven allegations. Corsi states that he doesn't need to prove anything. Well, I guess anyone can print fiction and call it non-fiction.

Publisher Mary Matalin of Simon & Schuster states, "It (the book) was not designed to be, and does not set out to be, a political book." Simon & Shuster also refused to validate any of the books sources and extensive footnotes, claiming there were 'just too many'. These footnotes almost exclusively are referenced to blogs and other fictional, unreliable sources. Why is this book selling so fast? Its an old conservative trick. Various conservative right-wing organizations hunt or push for these books and then buy them in quantity to get them on the best seller list immediately. The books are then distributed to members. No, its not illegal, but is it ethical?

"The Obama Nation" is actually a twist on the word abomination. Now is that very clever or juvenile? Not only that, but Corsi's book contains what most people would consider offensive language in regards to racial ancestry in Obama's family history. In fact, Corsi states this about his `facts': "I don't need more," he said. "I'm putting this question forward. I'm putting the evidence forward. Voters can make up their own minds." It should be duly noted that Corsi writes for World Net Daily, a conservative Web site whose lead headline Thursday, August 7th was "Astonishing photo claims: Dead Bigfoot stored on ice." That's laughable. I hope this review was able to save you some hard earned dollars.

However, if you want to read some positive, inspiration work, try, "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream". Almost always, an uplifting outlook far surpasses a negative, depressing divisive tome.

4 stars Interesting read if you're on the fence...

There's a lot about Barack Obama to like, and it's pretty hard to out and out loathe him.

What gets me, though, with the longest presidential primary in history is how little we really know about Obama. He has a family beyond his wife and kids; where are they? Why aren't they working for him? Isn't it a little strange that they're nowhere to be found?

And how can Obama come out of one of THE most corrupt political machines in the country and claim be as pure as the driven snow? What did he do in Chicago that got him the backing of the party bigwigs (and why are THEY all silent now that he's running?)

I really loathe conspiracy theories; it would take a whole LOT to make me give even the slighest credence to one. But I swear, the more I wonder about Obama, where he's from, what he's like, what he really believes, the more it seems like there's a whole lot we just aren't being told (and i thought that was what a free press was FOR.)

I don't know that I buy everything Corsi puts forth, but if you have any kind of an open mind on Obama, or you just can't decide, I would STRONGLY recommend you give this book a try. It may not be all entirely accurate (and I'm not saying it isn't), but it sure as hell is an INTERESTING read.

4 stars Another hit piece, but sound reasoning

I would read How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of "Intangibles" in Business before deciding how to interpret the polls or how to evaluate some of these forecasts but, overall, Corsi makes a reasonable case.

It's no big surprise to hear that there is a lot of hype about Obama, but the real reasons behind the hype are a little more surprising (no, seriously, Corsi has some you haven't already thought of). Obama's chosen name (he used to go by a different one), he associations and his views are more about the political reality he has to mirror in Chicago. As an adept politician, he goes to the church and promotes the views that best suits his political goals. As soon as he hit the national scene, all of that was, once again, up for review and possible change depending on the polls.

With just a fraction of one term as a US Senator and pervious experience amounting to only an Illinois state senator and academia, Obama has still managed to paint himself as the "experienced" choice on issues like the economy. The story of this accomplished politician is engaging and worth the read.

5 stars Totally Underrated

2008-08-11     127 of 199 found this review helpful

Jerome Corsi's The Obama Nation is one of the most inappropriately maligned books that I've ever come across. The Obama campaign itself sent out a mass emailing asking its supporters to attack the author due to his being a "smear merchant." Since then they have practiced the same tactics with Stanley Kurtz. Such an opinion regarding both parties is totally inaccurate.

Mr. Corsi definitely is a conservative who does not admire his subject but he has done no lying here. The Obama Nation is a deconstruction of what the Democratic nominee has written and said about himself in the past, and, as we would expect in regards to autobiographical commentary, there are many aspects of his life which run contrary to his own admissions.

Part One, "Roots," examines the tale as told in Dreams from My Father and Corsi judges its plot misleading. We find that his father, Barack Obama Senior, was both a Marxist and a thoroughly damaged man while his mother was an eccentric utopian. That Obama was essentially abandoned as a child is an eventuality confirmed by David Mendell in his From Promise to Power but when Corsi says so it is deemed a slur. Moreover, Mr. Corsi never contends that Barack is a Muslim--what he states is that he spent several of his formative years in a Muslim home and attended numerous religious services there. Well, there's no harm in that. Further, he could hardly have had any choice in the matter given his youth, but the problem with "letting it go" is that this truth has been consistently denied by his campaign.

Frank Marshall Davis, Obama's Hawaiian mentor, was a radical communist and this is a fact left out of the senator from Illinois's literary narrative, but it is one for which we are lucky Corsi uncovered. Obama's handlers do not want anyone focusing on his links to Antoin Rezko, William Ayers, and the black liberation theology of Reverend Wright and James Cone so we should not be surprised that they have chosen to character assassinate Corsi in the manner they have.

The author predicted this would happen as on page 303 he presciently argued that the Obama campaign derides every criticism as a "smear" and every attack an instance of "swiftboating." They have done precisely that since this book was published. For readers who have just come across it, read the text for yourself and make up your own mind. Don't let political operatives tell you what to do. In my mind, The Obama Nation is a fabulous piece of history and certainly worth your time.

Thank you, Dr. Corsi, for the long, hard hours and effort you put into this book. I have had alarm bells ringing in my head for months now, with no way to find out how much I should trust them. I stayed amazed on a daily basis that someone about whom I knew so little could actually be a candidate for America's PRESIDENT, the most powerful man on this planet. It would have been impossible for me to do the kind of research it would have required to find all the information you have given me in this book. [...] Dr. Corsi's writing is sound, researched and footnoted to a gnat's eyelash, responsible and more helpful than he may ever know. I had suspicions and fears, but confess I am STUNNED to know the extent of the dangerous truth. To think that so many are swooning at Obama's campaign speeches is truly frightening. The thought of making this man the most powerful man on this planet is terrifying. I BEG all voters (ALL...including all superdelegates - can you even begin to imagine the brouhaha that would follow if McCain won the popular election and Obama won the electoral? - and every Generation Y-er, and even if you already intend to vote for McCain) to read this book. "Obama Nation" is thoroughly law-suit-proofed with meticulous research and documentation. (Other reviewers said both those things first, but I believe it bears repeating.) It is remarkable how much of the information came straight from Obama himself in the two books he has had published: "Dreams My Father Left Me" (autobiographical - well - at least loosely autobio-graphical) and "The Audacity of Hope."

Dr. Corsi began thinking about this book in 2005 and researching and writing it in 2006. This is not one of those "hurry-up" books that come out within a mere few months following a happening (Obama's win in the primaries, in this case). There are 30 pages of over 700 footnotes and a complete index. It is a serious, trustworthy book about a very serious subject. Opinions from readers who posted "reviews" (more like personal rants than reviews) without reading the whole book are of no value. Your power is your INFORMED vote in the November election. Obama's power, if elected, is to be the most powerful man on this planet. Yours should be an informed power. Uninformed power is not only not helpful, it's destructive. Until this book was published, we knew next to nothing about this candidate. You do have to read all of the book though, not just pages or chapters or random selections... or, as one "reviewer" wrote, none of it!; you do have to read it with an open mind; and you do have to be willing and able to see the big picture. With what little information we had at the time, I had some legitimate concerns about voting for Obama, and much as I would have liked to be persuaded otherwise by more information, I am stunned that my concerns were small compared to the reality. Stunned and sad.

1 stars Beware of innuendo and smear tactics

2008-08-14     121 of 208 found this review helpful

Mr. Corsi is a notorious writer, known for his contempt of Democratic presidential candidates. His basic approach is to throw out a whole pile of innuendo, rumor, and smear-tactic commentary presented as "truth", load it up with tons of footnotes that on closer inspection are often tied to intolerant, even anti-Semitic sources, and then pass it off as serious "scholarship". His book on Obama falls into the same pattern, and also shows that some publishers are desperate enough to publish anything that might allow them to make a quick buck. Buy this book if you want to waste some money. Or be an intelligent citizen and ignore the Corsis of this world and make up your mind in a truly informed way.

5 stars Meticulously Documented

The critics of this book, or at least those that say there's no truth in it, have not read it or do not want to believe what the author is saying. In short, they have "drunk the Kool-Aid". The author has gone to great lengths to ensure the voracity of not only what he says, but his sources/references also. Bravo for Corsi. We cannot stop the Obama juggernaut at this point. People will vote for the dream, not the man. Anyway, on the merits, this book, because of its purpose, earns 5 stars from me. It reads like a history textbook - not too exciting. Then again, Senator Obama is a whole lot less interesting than the media would have you believe. This may be the only written work that truthfully chronicles Obama's past, therefore helping the reader understand what our future might look like should he assume the Presidency. You'll learn that that would not be a pretty picture. Read it and weep.

5 stars Detailed and Informative

2008-08-29     118 of 214 found this review helpful

Reading the negative reviews, it is clear that many of them have not read this book. I've just finished the audiobook and the statement that "this book makes absolutely no attempt to be objective in any way" is simply untrue and an outright lie. It certainly makes detailed attempts and accurately details many specifics of the Obama background that other reporters have failed or are unwilling to report. Certainly there is opinion in this book, but there is also documented fact. An educated reader who actually finishes the book can discern the difference.

Given the import of the position sought, Obama's background and record must be detailed. If this reveals some inconvenient truths (such as Barack and Michelle's long-term relationship with Rev. Wright or his friendship with Ayers), so be it. Unfortunately, simply revealing facts or questioning these relationships gets calls for silence and threats of legal action. So much for free speech.

5 stars The Book Obama Supporters Don't want You to Read

2008-08-27     103 of 165 found this review helpful

Okay, then don't read this book. But everything in this book is already available in newspapers, websites, You-tube clips, interviews, Obama's own books, his speeches, writings, articles, bills, records, court proceedings, primary sources, interviews, eyewitnesses, books and magazines, websites. I mean, if you've been paying attention to current events: the Democratic primaries, debates, the Jeremiah Wright sermons and interviews, the no precondition talks with dictators, all documented with video clips of Obama's own speeches, his own words, written or spoken, you DON'T need this book. Do your own research. Did Obama write an opinion for or against the Born-Alive Infant Protection Bill? What is Obama's voting record? How many times he voted "present"? Did Obama make the "bitter guns" comment? How about the "typical white person" one? Did he fold his hands over his crotch during the playing of the National Anthem? Did he not say he wouldn't wear a flag pin? Did he vote for additional spending in Iraq or not? Did he support the Partial Abortion Ban or not? Did he not say he wanted abortion to be available so his own daughters would not be "punished by a baby"? Did he or did he not march in Farrakhan's Million Man march? Go do your own research. Dig in the congressional archives. Look up his speeches on You-tube. Dig in the archives of his hometown newspapers. Read Saul Alinsky, Malcolm X and James Cone and see for yourself what influenced him. Then read Obama's own books. Then come back and tell us this book is useless.

All Corsi did was pull all of these primary sources together in one convenient book, to present Obama as he is, oftentimes with his own words. It's too bad his supporters don't want to see him as he is, but wish to project their own fantasies onto him. But at the end, America has to be responsible for choosing the right leader. It's not an excuse, it's reality.

1 stars Hack job written by highly questionable author

2008-08-07     98 of 270 found this review helpful

Having failed early on in his own bid for the 2008 presidential race, author Jerome Corsi has found time to piece together this collection of hateful disinformation. This guidebook of scare tactics arrives just in time for the fall election. Preying upon voters' fears and prejudices is one way to help McCain, but Corsi would have done well to stick to the facts if he wants to have any credibility at all as an author. Instead, he spends page after page trying to persuade the reader that Barack Obama is the boogie man: some kind of vaguely foreign-sounding, dark-skinned guy with good public speaking skills (and after all, George W. Bush didn't need good public speaking skills to become president.) Corsi continues to beat a dead horse when he claims that Obama is a Muslim (Obama is actually a Christian.) If the author is some kind of expert on the candidates' personal religious beliefs, perhaps he could explain why McCain recently changed his religion from Episcopalian to Baptist.
Jerome Corsi is the same man who brought a new low to politics by introducing the notorious "Swift Boat" attacks on John Kerry's Vietnam record. At least Kerry served in Vietnam. Mr. Corsi dodged the war due to eczema. Eczema! He's in good company - there's a proud tradition of hawkish Republicans who avoided Vietnam military service with similar medical issues. Rush Limbaugh said that he had "pilonidal cysts" (in the buttock region), Ken Starr had psoriasis, and Pat Buchanan had arthritis in his knees (which didn't prevent him from jogging.) Honorable mention: Bill O'Reilly's non-service despite being of draft age, Bush serving on the front lines of Texas, and the fact that Cheney "had other priorities in the '60s than military service." John McCain must secretly hate some of his fellow Republicans.
By the way, it's worth noting that author Jerome Corsi is a big advocate of a theory known as "abiotic oil production." It's a belief that the earth naturally produces an endless amount of oil. He doesn't believe that oil is a fossil fuel or in limited supply. Corsi's beliefs on this matter run contrary to all known information on the subject. If the author of "Obama Nation" would have you believe this, then it certainly doesn't speak well for his credibility on anything else.
If you're looking for factual-based information on this year's political candidates, Jerome Corsi's writings are definitely the last place to look.

This well-written, extensively researched book exposes the real Barack Obama. Not unlike other hard-core leftists, burping up lies and denegrating Americans comes as natural as taking a breath. Sen. Obama, as revealed in this book, has designs for America which should give any independent thinking person chills. His arrogance and contempt for average Americans will be what is remembered about Barack Obama. At least he'll have plenty of company in the Democrat Party. I could not put this book down. C'mon people. This kind of garbage should not be bought by either side, and the same should hold true of any similar "works" about Senator McCain. Does anyone really believe that these kind of partisan hacks offer any sort of objective point of view? Save your money, this book will be in the 99 cent, junk bargain bin at your local bookstore on November 5, no matter what the outcome of the election.

5 stars The Obama Nation

2008-08-02     77 of 138 found this review helpful

Dr. Jerome Corsi is a hero, a patriot and an honest man of integrity, who cares to tell people the truth...documented by 700 references and solid research. (a doctor of political science from Harvard University) Dr. Corsi answers all the questions the biased media won't ask...like who is the REAL Barack Hussein Obama? Thank God for this book and this honorable and courageous human being and brilliant writer. A must read.

4 stars Lot's of detail

2008-08-02     74 of 135 found this review helpful

I was skeptical that I would find any value in this book as I don't consider myself a political junkie. I was anticipating too much partisan propaganda for my taste but found that once I started reading the material was mostly objective. Yes, the author has a strong point of view and he tells you what that point of view is up front...but then he builds a solid case to support that point of view. You might not be swayed by all of the author's arguments, but I think most people that have not made up their mind (I am a staunch independent) will be given serious pause by a number of topics.

Sometimes the author feels the need to state (and restate) the obvious. Occasionally, I felt that the author would extrapolate a thought one step too far.

Overall, I felt like the book provided a good framework for putting a lot of background details into perspective. I have read Dreams for my Father and it never rang true to me; in fact I felt like I knew less about the real Obama after I was done reading. Obama Nation helped me understand why I felt uneasy after "Dreams." Most importantly I felt I could understood the personal context for Obama's actions, words and associations as revealed in recent events.

1 stars Unreliable sources

2008-08-16     72 of 125 found this review helpful

Obviously the Democrat's are going to say this book is full of lies, the Republican's full of truths. After reading this book I decided to really research the sources and read Obama's rebuttal before forming any opinion. I also decided to take one extra day to ponder my thoughts before reviewing this book. Well, I am here to report that the sources are NOT CREDIBLE. Many of the sources are bloggers. Not reliable sources, just bloggers with opinions. All of which are republicans or republican supporters. Also, anonymous sources just don't count. Never, ever, never. I don't care how many sources a book states to have, they MUST be legitimate. The sources quoted directly from Obama's books are also MISREPRESENTED. Honestly, I read this book with a very open mind with hopes of becoming educated on Obama. What I learned was the Dr. Corsi rarely tells the full truth or state truthful facts. Even the publisher, Mary Matlin stated that she didn't "fact check" the book. She felt she didn't need to since the book was written as a "scholarly book". Publisher's do have a responsiblity to fact check when a book is intended to be sold as NON FICTION. Whether or not you are for or against Obama is irrelevant when reading a book touted as non fiction for factual information. The ONLY relevance should be factuality. If it is not factual the the question is: Is the book fact or fiction? If it is billed as fact, then it should be TRUTHFUL in its facts otherwise it is fiction. This book is fiction. How can I be sure? Check all the references. Read Obama's 40 page rebuttal. Check each and every source to decide for yourself. Don't decide what is truth based on your personal political preferences or your favorite cable network news personality or worse yet, your favorite radio personality. Become your own investigator and seek the real truth as I did. We owe it to ourselves to believe in our own abilities to distinguish fact from fiction in ALL we read, hear, see and most especially in what we say. Vote for Obama, don't vote for Obama, that doesn't matter, what matter's is truth. Find the truth then decide.

1 stars More Dirty Political Smears

More of the same mudslinging politics that tarnish every US election. Much is made of the pages of footnotes, however the biggest allegations (for example, that Barack Obama's father left his mother to observe Muslim law), just link back to Right Wing Blogs that make unfounded claims.

Don't support Obama if you don't agree with his policies. But keep it about that- the policies, and the real issues and proposals. Don't buy into this endless mudslinging that "casts doubt" on the GOP opponents with baseless smears.

5 stars Read, despite negative comments

2008-10-16     69 of 107 found this review helpful

I'm glad I've finally purchased and read this book, negative comments notwithstanding.

Reviewer Jonathan Kern correctly notes that its opening chapters dragged. But like him I found completing Corsi's book illuminating. Thanks to Mr. Kern, I needn't expend much energy reviewing FactCheck.org's supposed fact checking. He's correct: they did a rotten job, and the errors they found were indeed minor.

Okay, so Barack Obama can't claim to be a Kenyan citizen (p. 103), since Kenya prohibits dual citizenship for anyone over 21. Big deal. Okay, so Obama's father was not a "Kenyan citizen" when he was born, as Kenya won independence only in December 1963, "when Obama was 2 years old." Ditto.

Yet, the book is sufficiently accurate to threaten Kenya's corrupt government, which arrested Corsi without charge when he traveled there recently to promote it. Naturally, Obama didn't care.

Corsi notes that Obama himself traveled to Kenya and lent critical support (inadvertently or not) to fellow Luo tribesman, Islamist ally and socialist Raila Odinga, who opposed the December 2007 election results. Yet Obama said little when Odinga's protests triggered riots by the Luo and his Muslim allies against Kenya's ruling Kikuyu people and 90% majority Christians, of whom hundreds were subsequently murdered in their homes and burned alive in churches. Odinga now shares power with Kikuyu President Kibaki in a government to which the former was not elected.

I might have wanted less on Obama's family background, and more on his deeds, but could care less about why Corsi included the content he did---so long as it is accurate. And Corsi very well documents Obama's personal historical associations, and comments made by his former friends and family. Significantly, these facts are not questioned.

In every past presidential election, the press has more or less carefully examined candidates' early life, associations, deeds, writings, statements and so on. Strangely, Obama has largely escaped this scrutiny from either broadcast or print media and periodicals---save those smeared as "conservative." In short, the major media have committed mass dereliction of professionalism and public duty. No doubt, Thomas Paine is churning in his grave.

That's why the public desperately needs this book, which I recommend, despite some faults, to all U.S. voters. Reports of Obama's past should be known, not dismissed as false rumor, when they're largely accurate.

I wish the book included details on Obama's relationship with Saudi businessman Khalid al-Mansour, who reportedly helped advance his application and acceptance at Harvard.

But it raises lots of other good questions, like those one "conservative" columnist rhetorically asked before the Oct. 16 presidential debate:

How old was Obama when he learned of the numerous bombings orchestrated by Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers when Barry was only eight and why, exactly, did he nevertheless associate with Ayers for many years on many projects---and pretend Ayers was "just a guy in my neighborhood"?

Didn't Ayers and his Charles Manson celebrating wife usher Obama into politics at a private home party for Chicago bigwigs?

Did Barack Obama attend "Black Value System" indoctrination courses required of all other congregants after joining Rev. Jeremiah Wright's racist Chicago Trinity church for 20 years?

How much did Obama receive from Antonin Rezko, his corporation and Nahdmi Auchi, his Iraqi best arms-dealing buddy?

Did Obama know Wright's sermons closely resembled those of bona fide anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan?

In 2006, what "fact finding" advantage fell to Illinois voters from Obama's visit to Kenya's Odinga, again?

Why did Barack Obama support learn, practice and teach agitating tactics of communist Saul Alinsky?

Too many voters dogmatically refuse to read (much less genuinely consider questions raised by) any publication labeled "conservative," despite the currently meaningless, destructive nature of the term.

Let's recall, the "conservative" appointees lost the U.S. Supreme Court case when the bench's "liberal" majority legitimized seizure of private property by eminent domain to benefit commercial corporate development. Surely, whatever else liberty and pursuit of happiness might be, they include the right to own personal property, barring criminal and moral decrepitude, and protect it from government seizure.

The election has not yet occurred, October 16 debate night polls not withstanding, and voters can still do themselves and the U.S. a favor by reading Obama Nation.

1 stars Extremely misleading

I read this because the author behind this is the same as the Kerry / swift boat trash. I wanted to see what kind of "facts" Corsi was working with this time. Most of the controversial content in this book has either been disproved or is entirely made up. I recommend reading it only for the sake of knowing the type of misinformation the Obama opposition is spreading.

1 stars Footnoting Doesn't Confer Legitimacy

2008-08-07     67 of 164 found this review helpful

Claims of objectivity make me nervous. Whether we're reading an anti-Obama or anti-McCain book (or email, or website, or article, or whatever), we can't forget that we're reading a perspective, and with politics, there's almost always an agenda.

So I'm as concerned with how this book is packaged as I am with its content. Calling something objective doesn't make it so. Including research doesn't equal a factual treatment. And footnotes have no special power: Seven or seven-hundred, it's not the quantity that matters.

Speaking of footnotes, don't see a raised number and automatically think the claim before it must be supported. Flip to the back and scrutinize the footnote. Several of the footnotes are from blog posts. That's the equivalent of me writing, "This book is stupid" and then referencing one of the book-basher's reviews, or "I was voting for Obama, but this book changed my mind," and footnoting one of the reviews above. Footnoting doesn't confer legitimacy.

I read the book this afternoon at a bookstore. I was disappointed by the things I've already mentioned, but I think I'm most disappointed with how this is presented. I don't care what bias an author has, as long as the bias isn't packaged as an objective look. Throwing in some source citations and littering the book with footnotes dresses it up like an academic treatment of issues, but it's in appearance only.

So, that's my justification for the one-star. Books like this are dangerous--whether from the right or left.

5 stars You owe it to yourself to read this book.

Dr. Corsi's book chronicles Senator Obama's life, associations and influences. Because Senator Obama has been a national figure for such a short time, very few of us know who he really is. This book offers us a balanced perspective as a counterpoint to Obama's own books. I highly recommend this book to Republicans and Democrats alike. It will shed light on how he might use his executive power - should he be elected, and who he might appoint to the Supreme Court. Supreme Court appointments will affect our lives for decades to come...

Senator McCain has been on the national stage for decades. We know exactly what he stands for and that he won't budge on any issues. In short, what you buy is what you get. Once you complete Dr. Corsi's book you will have a clearer understanding of what your vote in November could mean for our future.

In these times of geopolitical, economic and structural uncertainty it is our patriotic duty to go into the voting booth fully informed. Buy this book, and Obama's if you must, but don't show up in November with an incomplete story. It could hurt us for decades...

A colleague, who is not an Obama fan, asked that I read the book, expecting that some information of some consequence would be revealed and I would somehow change my opinion Barak Obama. The book just reinforces my support of Obama. This is just another hit job and an attempt to discredit a viable candidate for the sake of keeping the same tired administration in office. It's sad really.

5 stars Insightful and penetrating analysis of a presidential candidate...

2008-08-05     66 of 119 found this review helpful

This book accomplishes a vital objective in placing the Obama candidacy in perspective: absent any significant accomplishment in a completely ordinary career, Obama is running for the presidency of the world's only superpower on the basis of his celebrity status. He fills a suit well and can read from a teleprompter. Image is everything to the Axelrod-driven Obama campaign. This book explains why this is the case. The mainstream media pose nary a critical question for the candidate to probe his character, his background, or his judgment. Unfortunately, the written record and characters involved with Mr. Obama in his formative years, with which Mr. Obama has not been particularly forthcoming, paint a fairly disturbing portrait of him. The rather predictable outcome cannot be attributed solely to the author. These are simply facts, as is Obama's extreme liberal voting record in the Illinois state senate, which is dutifully recorded here as well.

1 stars This belongs in the fiction column

This author cannot and should not be trusted solely on his ability to falsify claims and use swiftboating tactics during elections just like what he did to Kerry.

[...]

Throughout this book he continuously claim that Obama is Muslim and believes in an Islamic God Allah. This is not true at all. But after many times that this guy has be debunked he continues on with false information.

He keeps calling Obama leftist. So wanting to help the middle class leftist? Wanting to improve our country leftist? How removing the fear of nuclear weapons and getting us alternative sources of energy called leftist? It seems to this author whatever Obama does is considered leftist and its a shame that what his doing is none other than sensationalizing lies to scare the uneducated voters away from Obama.

There are very few factual evidence but he spins it to make Obama look negative in the eyes of the public.

This book is not worth buying unless you like to be lied too and lose about 20 bucks. It belongs in the fiction section where all those fairy tale books belong.

5 stars Very informative

Whether you agree with Obama's politics or not this is very informative in respects to background associations and his beliefs in government's role. To say he is different from McCain is an understatement in a huge sense. If those who believe that Corsi distorted Obama's beliefs or associations maybe they should create a similar well referenced book so the dispute is based on facts and not simple "savior mentality" many in the Obama camp advocate. A very good read for all.

I got this book from Amazon in yesterday's mail, started reading and have been underlining and post-it taping like mad. I thought I already knew a lot about Obama but this gave more precise detail about stories I had heard about such as Obama campaigning in Kenya two years ago for his cousin Raila Odinga who pledged to bring Sharia law to Kenya which is at most 15% Muslim. Odinga lost the election and incited horrific violence including the trapping of 50 Christians of the opposing Kikuyu tribe in a Pentecostal church and burning them to death. Obama persuaded Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice to force the current pro-American Kenya government into power-sharing with Odinga who was educated in East Germany and is no friend of the U.S. You can look up this kind of material on Google, but Jerome Corsi has already done the work for us. This is an important, must read book.

Hundreds of so-called "facts" in the book have been debunked by most all trusted news sources, even those that lean right. A plethora of footnotes does not guarantee accuracy, especially when many of the footnotes refer to his own previous writings.

I tried reading the first chapter, and small sections througout, and it made me ill to think that this book can be considered journalism. Even the NYT noted that when this book hit THEIR best seller list, most of the sales were "bulk sales", which probably includes a few thousand copies purchased by Karl Rove and Cindy McCain.

Don't bother, even negative attention to this book gives it credibility. If I could give it 0 stars, I would.

2 stars I Try Not To Give 1 Star Reviews, but....

2008-08-14     63 of 123 found this review helpful

As a writer myself, I try not to give one star book reviews, but if any book deserves it, this does.

Edited to Note: This book was published by former Cheney aide, Mary Matalin. For many readers, this is all they need to know to make a decision.

There are so many lies here and even the author was forced to admit (on "Larry King Live") that it is not factual.

Anyone who can say a book can be full of lies about a man, but if one or two things are true, it's a good book, as Corsi does--is completely discredited, in my opinion.

The Muslim argument, in particular, has been shown to be completely false. Obama is Christian, devoutly so, and has never, ever been Muslim (not that there's anything wrong with it. He just isn't.)

This is as "scrupulously researched" as Corsi's online postings--that oil is a nearly infinite resource that continues to generate naturally, that Hillary Rodham Clinton is likely to be a lesbian, that the Pope is senile, and that Muslims worship Satan.

That's the level of thinking here--no suprise that his "700 footnotes" are mostly from online right-wing blogs and commentators.

Corsi has never corrected his lies and smears in 2004 about John Kerry's heroic military service.

This book has one purpose: to give conservative media and Republicans a chance to hit the airwaves with anti-Obama talking points--even if it means perpetuating lies.

Aren't we tired of those kinds of tactics? Aren't we ready for a politician who is truthful and honest and focuses on ISSUES that are important--the economy, the war, health care, the environment, education?

I'm sick of these smear tactics. I hope they will be completely repudiated on November 4th--and that this author's irresponsible and intentionally malicious book will be repudiated by buyers. That is my HOPE, anyway, that we stop the smear merchants at last, and bring back some decency, facts, and honesty to our national policies.

Corsi has less credibility as a "source of truth" than any other writer in recent history, and seems to relish in his fabrication of absurdities. If the falsehoods in this book were not so malicious, one could make a case to classify this "book" as comic-fiction, but there's nothing funny about Corsi's assault. I'm old enough to remember a time in America's history -- before corporations and lobbyists took control over the corruptable in our government -- that truthfullness and ethics were universally accepted in books and ads. Today, unfortunately, anyone can manufacture any sort of lie, package it with a slick ad or flashy book jacket, and pass it off as truth. This sort of "Swift Boat" assault on truth is what America needs to stand up and reject from our politics and society. The era of fabricating lies to benefit a few (very corrupt) corporations and individuals should be kicked out in January along with the rest of the pathetic, unpatriotic, constitution bashing thieves who will finally be leaving the White House. The true "Obama Nation" will be a country where honesty, integrity, ethics and truth prevail... and no more of the lying scare-tactics of Corsi's foul vomit on our otherwise great nation.

1 stars Absolute trash - no reputable publisher would have printed this

This book is absolute trash. If the author couldn't even get basic facts right -- facts he could have gotten from Wikipedia or a simple Google search -- then how can you trust anything in the book? The facts and arguments are DELIBERATELY twisted, distorted and outright fabricated! Anyone who cares about truth and fairness needs to be fighting back against this garbage of a book with every bit of firepower at our disposal. I would give this book NEGATIVE stars if Amazon would allow it.

1 stars Zero Stars If Possible

The beginning of this book is an attempt to show us the author is really a good guy with a cutting edge history of tolerance and fighting for civil rights and justice...from that platform he then takes a noise dive into an empty pool. To say this book is junk is to be too complimentary. It's so bad, the author was forced to put a disclaimer that none of his prior Swift Boat cohorts could sign on to this drivel.

If you're intent on manufacturing reasons to dislike Obama, this is the book for you. If you like to rely on fact rather than fiction...look elsewhere.

1 stars Nothing but lies

I urge everyone who is thinking of reading this book to do some minimal research to check out the claims of this ethics-challenged author. Virtually everything in the book is absolutely untrue, and can be found to be untrue by spending five minutes of checking. Only people who live in a fantasy world would believe a thing he says. In fact, the book is libelous, and the guy should be sued into bankruptcy so he can't do this kind of thing again.

But then, people who give this book high ratings clearly have no interest in the truth, only in promoting their own twisted fantasies.

5 stars Very good book and from Obama's own words!

2008-08-11     61 of 115 found this review helpful

This was a really good book to understand who Barack Obama is, where he comes from, what he believes in and who he associates with now and in the past. It isn't written in a bashing attitude, just information we should all consider this election. Since he doesn't tell anyone now who he is, we are left knowing by his own words (his books that people maybe haven't really read in length) and from what is documented else where. This is well written and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't really know Barack Obama. I think that covers many, many of us. I was afraid that anyone who hangs their campaign on two words, Hope and Change, means, that we had better hope the country can survive through his plans of change. His change is: Let me change your mind about all you hold dear and believe in now. There is a political machine behind him and he is the wheel. We all should think about how he can say he is any different from any other far left activist politician.

1 stars PLEASE READ BEFORE RATING; I GIVE IT ONE STAR FOR A VERY GOOD REASON

2008-08-25     60 of 110 found this review helpful

The book claims that the writings of Malcolm X led Obama to the Nation of Islam. To support his argument, Corsi quotes Obama's memoir, Dreams from My Father. The problem is that Corsi completely misrepresents what Obama writes in the memoir. It's true that Obama mentions that Malcolm X's autobiography spoke to him when he was a teenager. But Obama also writes, "And yet, even as I imagined myself following Malcolm's call, one line in the book stayed me. He spoke of a wish he'd once had that the blood that ran through him, there by an act of violence, might somehow be expunged." (Apparently, X's mother was raped by a white man.) Corsi interprets the first sentence to mean "one line in the book stayed [with] me," as if Obama were saying that he was influenced by it. But Obama actually writes, "one line in the book STAYED me," meaning that Malcolm's statement gave him pause. On the basis of his misinterpretation, Corsi concludes that Obama "rejects everyone white, including his mother and grandparents," which is quite a pernicious distortion. Anyone who has actually read Obama's memoir, as I have, knows the love, tenderness, and respect with which he writes about his white mother and grandparents.

Corsi totally ignores Barack's detailed, eight page rejection (Dreams from My Father, pp. 197-205) of black nationalism. Obama writes, "Ever since the first time I'd picked up Malcolm X's autobiography, I had tried to untangle the twin strands of black nationalism, arguing that nationalism's affirmative message need not depend on hatred of whites...[However,] I came to see that the blanket indictment of everything white served a central function in their message of uplift." Obama ultimately rejected black nationalism because he saw that it depended on blaming whites. Also notice how he clearly writes, "THEIR message," since he himself does not subscribe to it. He further criticizes black nationalism by calling it "an attitude rather than a concrete program, a collection of grievances and not an organized force." Ignoring all this, Corsi only mentions how Obama admits to being drawn to Malcolm X's writing. After taking it out of context, Corsi uses that statement as the grain of truth around which he begins to form his argument that Obama is a follower of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. But when you actually read Obama's memoir, you see that Obama harshly criticizes the Nation of Islam. Obama ridicules the Nation of Islam's newspaper, The Final Call, noting its "sensational, tabloid-style headlines," its anti-Semitism, and crass materialism. Obama says that black nationalism "could thrive as an emotion," but it "flounders as a program." He says that its leaders are "less interested in changing the rules of power than in the color of those who [have power]." Obama says that black nationalism is "race baiting" and concludes that it is just "one more feeder of fantasy, one more mask for hypocrisy, one more excuse for inaction." Corsi conveniently ignores all of this, cherry-picking only the sentences he can manipulate out of context. Corsi also points to the fact that Obama took part in the 1995 Million Man March on Washingtion. Actually, though, thousands upon thousands of blacks and whites of all stripes joined in the march, not just Farrakhan's people.

As for Corsi's sources, they are Fox News Sunday, The O'Reilly Factor, and a bunch of newspapers, blogs, and websites, some of dubious merit. (By the way, Corsi disparages the New York Times, but you wouldn't know it from his copious use of that newspaper as a source!) After 300 laborious pages of trying to prove that Obama is part of the Nation of Islam movement, Corsi absurdly concludes, "Those of us who oppose Obama would make a mistake to claim he is secretly Islamic. When Obama tells us he has never believed in Islam, we must take him at his word. Yet, if voters perceive that Obama tilts in his current politics toward Islam, that conclusion will be detrimental to Obama's chances in the general election." In other words, Obama really isn't muslim, but if we can put that idea in people's head, Obama will be defeated. Corsi wraps up by giving further advice on how to defeat Obama. He writes, "the way to beat Obama is to follow Hillary Clinton's lead...Hillary's only mistake was not to take Obama seriously from the very beginning."

Obama Nation is one of the most deceptive books ever. If you have any respect for the truth, spare yourself Corsi's diatribe. How a university such as Harvard awarded him a graduate degree is hard to fathom. Perhaps he was more accurate and honest then than now. In any case, judging from some reviews, I regret to say that many people believe what Corsi writes. Some even claim to have read Barack's books and to have found confirmation of Corsi there. Anybody who actually reads Obama's books, however, can't help but notice Corsi's outrageous manipulations and distortions of Obama's life and message.

I was quite excited when I first found this book, but by the end of the first chapter, I simply wished I hadn't bothered.

Biased and unsubstantiated, this book is nothing more than an anecdotal look at the life and times of Barak Obama through every negative interview the author can find. There are a ton of logical inconsistencies in the way Mr. Corsi draws his 'conclusions,' which is a pity because the book could have been more, but doesn't deliver. Even the author's claim to link Obama to Islamic beliefs is poorly researched and makes a huge leap in logic before sliding to a grinding halt with a mild, rather luke-warm 'conclusion.'

If you are against Obama (and I assume most of us reading this book are), you'd spend your money better by supporting the RNC than by purchasing this book. And if you're for him, then relax -- the book missed the mark by a mile.

1 stars Full of factual errors

2008-08-15     58 of 113 found this review helpful

Wow. I was surprised by the number of factual errors I saw when reading this book. I guess the author was rushed to get this published before the election so he could cash in on the controversy (like he did with Kerrys book).

I don't wish to list them all but this one simple example should speak volumes:

"The year 1995 was a banner one for Obama. He had just married Michelle and the couple bought a Hyde Park condo, the first home Obama ever owned."[p 145]

Obama And Michelle Robinson Were Married on 10/3/1992, and they brought their Hyde Park a Condo in 1993. Both of which are easily referenced in Chicago Sun-Times articles.

There are other much more serious errors which I fear would border on slanderous if I said them about someone not in the public eye, but they obviously help spice up the story and help sell more copies.

Shame on you for lowering political discourse just to make a few bucks!

5 stars A must read expose

2008-08-10     58 of 107 found this review helpful

This book is a must read. Whether the facts in the book are to be disputed or not, the book must be read and the issues it addresses must be confronted by any serious opinion leader or voter in the 2008 election.

The most relevant aspect of the book to me is the fact that it corroborates my general and independent professional economic judgment that the socio-economic policies of the Obama campaign are fundamentally Marxist and Communist in nature. To the extent this is true -- as I believe it is -- then I strongly advocate that the ideas be defeated in November. Many American lives have been given over in foreign wars to save the liberties that a move towards Marxism/Communism in America today would destroy. It cannot be allowed unless we are prepared to give over many of our basic freedoms to an often foolish and generally wasteful Government.

Before I read Dr. Corsi's book, I had already arrived independently at the conclusion in my own work that Obamanomics was a neo-communist agenda. My conclusions were based simply on a static comparison of the basic tenets of Marxism and Communism to the substantive policy statements being made by Obama and his supporters in this election.

What Dr. Corsi's analysis does is to supply a dynamic (process of change over time) understanding of how and why Obama developed his economic ideas and opinions. This does not itself prove my opinions, but it does interestingly enough complement my results by adding a consistent explanation of how Obama and his advisers have formed their economic ideas.

Dr. Corsi does not systematically address the substantive nature of Obamanomics, but he provides a coherent account of how Obama begins life as a Muslim and later migrates into Community Organizing and then ultimately to Black Liberation Theology (some dare to call it a Christian faith -- but it is really just a form of Marxism) on the basis of a deeply embedded Marxist/Communist view of the world.

Most of the book is devoted to the story of the evolution of Barack Obama's personality based on an analysis of his own autobiography. The first part of the Corsi book examines the accuracy and candor of the autobiography and concludes that Obama is a liar and a manipulator of the facts of his life and his personal development -- probably for reasons of political ambition.

The remainder of the book draws out the alleged facts of Obama's political and intellectual associations and helps to lay bare the elements of and process underlying Obama's basic character flaws and strengths, as well as his ideological emphasis. The book appears to carefully show the many alleged lies and half-truths in Obama's autobiography. It portends to show the life-long pattern of his intellectual interests and his associations.

The book, ultimately, provides a coherent and suggestive account of Obama's recent associations with Saul Alinsky, Bill Ayers, Bernadette Dorne, The Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Father Flager and Louis Farakan. The book also develops a notion of Obama's early-in-life devotion to Malcolm X during his radical phase, as well as an early-in-life intellectual reliance on and perhaps outright devotion to the ideas of Franz Fanon, Frank Marshall Davis, and various other well known (and self-proclaimed) Marxists and Communists.

I have been a very open critic of Obama's economic agenda and his seemingly general ignorance of markets and economics. All of which is a little surprising to me considering Obama worked in investments and finance briefly after his political science degree at Columbia? I, accordingly, freely admit a bias against Obama's economic ideas for this reason. But, regardless, I find that the Corsi book is just too extensively documented not to be believed on some level. It appears to be a first-rate work of journalism and scholarship. Virtually every alleged fact in the book is corroborated and carefully exposed for third party verification -- and often in painful detail.

Besides the systematic analysis, there are many revelations in this book, such as the nature of the financial favors of Tony Rezko, and the wild story of the bold $200,000 increase in Michelle Obama's salary at the University of Chicago Hospital on the very eve of Obama's Senatorial election -- followed in uncomfortably short order by a $1 million dollar Congressional earmark for the Hospital requested by Obama shortly after the election.

This seems to be a real audacity -- not just of hope -- but perhaps more of greed and political lust. Anyone who follows insider trader litigation, for example, knows that such correlations are very often enough to get a conviction in Federal Court!

There is much more in this book. In time, I will return and further explicate the book in line with my objective of fully understanding and exposing the true nature of the Marxist/Communist economic agenda of the Obama campaign.

My only extensive criticism of the book, for now, is that it does not itself attempt to develop the reality of the dangers in the Obama economic agenda. The book provides much of the data needed to show that Obama is at the very least operating on a constructively Communist agenda. As a political scientist, however, I suppose Dr. Corsi would say it is up to an economist such as myself to write the book that proves that Obamaism is a form of Communism.

I have set to work on that and for the readers edification I provide an Amazon Reading List to jump start any enterprising readers who want to follow me into the details.

5 stars Ordinarily I do not like books about politics

2008-08-06     58 of 117 found this review helpful

that being said, this book is a must read for anyone who is going to vote this November. It is very well researched, and documented, with over 700 footnotes. There's nothing dry or boring about the book. Corsi lays it all out for you in an easy to read and understand fashion. He ties up all the loose ends. He exposes all the things that have been up until now kept out of the public eye. He makes sense and gives reasons for some of the more bizarre aspects of this candidate and his associates. I never thought I would have trouble putting down a book about politics. It is riveting.

1 stars Self-referential piece of trash--should get negative stars!

2008-08-16     57 of 114 found this review helpful

Jerome Corsi is a right-wing extremist whom even the mainstream media have done a very good job of discrediting. His defense of the "truth" of this anti-Obama diatribe is that it has tons of footnotes. What he fails to mention is that the footnotes all reference right-wing sources, including blogger websites and HIS OWN WRITING! When you're an author and you have to document your work using YOURSELF as a source, that's pretty desperate.

This book is merely an attempt by right-wingers to keep Barack Obama out of the White House. It will be looked upon in future as an amusing chapter in history, in terms of the kind of material some people attempted to slime the man with even before he was elected. It will be regarded the same way we today regard nineteenth-century writings that attempted to slime Abraham Lincoln.

1 stars entertainment is not reality hence:

2008-08-14     57 of 101 found this review helpful

This book belongs on the fiction and entertainment shelf. This author is using the false category of -investigative report- to describe his work as much as Fox news do the same when they are in fact entertainment.
If your intention is to make up your mind using reality go to a credible and reputable source. This is, if anything, a source of fiction-entertainment and is not worthy of being classified in any other way. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's literature is based on stories told by people yes, that doesn't mean that there are ladies that live for 200 years as it is described on one of his great -fictional- short stories and the fact that he is a nobel prize winner doesn't mean that he is excempt form telling lies -or writing fiction-. Same goes with the author of this book. Beautiful resume and, what he writes here is nothing short of poorly written fiction.
I'd stick with Garcia Marquez for a fictionalized account of reality.

This book uncovers Barack's true nature as a Marxist so to speak. While I want the Democratic Party to win the 2008 election, I don't want the people to suffer Barack's reign. He would rather be the President of the World rather than the United States.

This book is very interesting and shines a second, more sinister light on Barack then what you see in the media. It is something they won't touch because he is their golden boy. For once I would like to see a trurthful man or woman running for president and not someone with little experience, a socialist, and a lot to hide.

Unlike some who haven't read this book, but decided to comment because of their loyalty to Obama, I spent about a few hours in Barnes, trying my best to learn something new about Obama that I may have missed in this book, however, I must say after 3 hours in this book, I found this book to be nothing but a hit job on Obama, I thought it was coming straight out of the Republican talking points, there wasn't even an attempt to be somewhat objective, it was like watching Fox News' Greatest Obama Hits, sorry but this was a very poor attempt to convince an Fair Minded Independent like myself of why not to vote for Obama, it was just a repackaged highlight of all the negative trash the GOP wants us to believe about Obama, maybe next time Corsi would try to strike some type of balance. Save your money and just keep your channel tuned on Fox News!

Long after the successful "swift boating" of John Kerry, the collective media belatedly admitted that they had failed to perform their investigative journalistic duty by examining the swift boaters' claims and revealing them for the pack of lies they were. Here is another attempt to use lies and unsubstatiated innuendoes against a Democratic presidential candidate. It remains to be seen whether journalists will this time rise to the occasion and call Corsi's hand wherever he has fabricated, falsified, or failed to substantiate his claims.

5 stars A Somewhat one-sided look at the subject

2008-08-06     56 of 150 found this review helpful

The author claims that this is not a "swift boat book". Public policy differences are what the author has problems with as far as an Obama presidency is concerned. Some of the issues that Obama holds on abortion, taxes, international trade and national security concern the author. He calls Obama's politics "leftist" and says his policies are destructive.

He discusses Obama's antiwar policies, among other things. He claims Obama is further left than George McGovern. He says that Obama wants to do away with all nuclear weapons.

He claims doing so would leave the United States "undefended". He says Obama is too "green" to win. He's not been vetted. In the first stage of an election, according to the book, it's all about personality. But later, it begins to be about issues. The author says that's why George Bush won his two races.

He gives other examples of winners and losers such as the winner, Reagan. About 60% of the country will vote on the conservative side, he says.

The author uses mostly public and many well-known appearances of Obama and what others have said about him and his chances to win. I can't see where he's given any surprising information or exposed a smoking gun.

The book reads mostly like a right wing rant against the candidate. While much of it is probably true, the reader or would-be reader should be aware of this fact. He makes a lot of Obama as being an "elitist" and gives a number of reasons why this is so.

He has used a number of Obama's unguarded moments to make his case. Certainly this is acceptable and not without merit.

He gives a lot of background of Obama, starting with the publication of his first book. He discusses some of what's in that book. He is, of course, considerably critical of the book and the way it was written.

It reflects Obama's "inner perception" of his past, the author writes. In other words, it is not necessarily the way it happened but the way the candidate chooses to see it.

He then begins to draw political conclusions from Obama's writing about race and other issues.

The author goes on to tell the truth about what Obama writes. He goes into great detail about his father and how Obama lies about him. But, I must say, I can't blame a person for not telling all the ugly things about his parents and what his parents did or did not do is no reflection on the child.

But every lie in Obama's book is dissected and the author has uncovered the truth. Or, at least the purported truth.

By going back to the way Obama deals with issues in his own life and how those things affected him, the author paints a picture of a man unfit to lead the nation and certainly not ready.

The author does a superior job of taking Obama apart. He studies him and reveals him. And in so doing, he uncovers an unattractive person who should not be elected to the high office of president.

Regardless of your political views, this is a book you should read. I never give my own political views in my reviews and if at any point it sounds like I have, it is unintended. I only report what I've read.

I like the book for what it is and I recommend it to you.

Why would anyone take Dr. Corsi's book seriously? If he can't read the Introduction to Sen. Obama's book, how could he possibly research the rest of what he writes?

From the Media Matters for America website:

On Pages 49-50, Corsi falsely claims that Obama did not dedicate Dreams from My Father to his mother or his grandparents. Corsi writes:

Interestingly, Obama did not dedicate Dreams from My Father to his mother, or to his father, Barack Senior, or to his Indonesian stepfather. Missing from the dedication are the grandparents who raised him in Hawaii, especially during the years his mother abandoned him to return to Indonesia to be with Lolo [Soetoro, Obama's stepfather].

In fact, while the 2004 edition of Dreams -- the version Corsi cites in Obama Nation (Part One, endnote 2, Page 306) -- does not contain a separate dedication page, on Page xvii, the last page of the book's introduction, Obama writes:

It is to my family, though -- my mother, my grandparents, my siblings, stretched across oceans and continents -- that I owe the deepest gratitude and to whom I dedicated this book. Without their constant love and support, without their willingness to let me sing their song and their toleration of the occasional wrong note, I could never have hoped to finish. If nothing else, I hope that the love and respect I feel for them shines through on every page [emphasis added].

I'm more than happy to read well-researched books painting negative pictures of our major political figures. But this book is not only not well-researched, it gives a bad name to scholarship. Including hundreds of footnotes as substatiation for its assertions sounds impressive-until you realize that the footnotes are from extremly biased bloggers and others with axes to grind. Corsi himself has a history of anoymous blogging while spewing out very hateful messages. He includes quotes from anti-semitic haters. This is no way to frame a political debate. The folks at Simon & Schuster (parent publisher) should hang their heads in shame.

Jerome Corsi was already discredited after his previous book of smears "Unfit for Command" that slandered John Kerry. This book is no different. It's full of provable lies, distortions and smears about how Obama's a secret Muslim, yet goes to church and believes everything said by Rev. Wright. It's nothing but blatant right-wing propaganda and already-debunked baloney. 1 stars Plenty of bias, no scholarship

2008-08-14     51 of 103 found this review helpful

This book is an apt follow-on to the anti-Kerry book of the 2004 election. Corsi is consistent in his use of innuendo and non-truths to bash Obama. Fact checkers are having a field day revealing the many errors and false assertions filling the book. Corsi cites numerous sources to bolster his points, most of which come from conservative media. And even when he cites these obviously biased sources, he manages to misstate and exaggerate in order to put the worst worst possible spin on Obama. Why is Corsi so obsessed with trashing only Democratic presidential candidates? What is his real agenda?

5 stars Chilling thoughts: Obama as President could be ruinous

This is a very well-documented expose on the "real" Obama. I have heard all the innuendos in the press re: his radical leanings, but held off on judging until I had more facts. This is not a "tabloid-type" book, with poorly-cited sources. It is the real thing and the author is meticulous in that area of citation. No question to me now that an Obama presidency would destabilize America and make it a "less-safe" place to live during these unpredictable times. Chilling !!!

3 stars Mixed reaction from an "undecided" moderate

2008-08-12     51 of 87 found this review helpful

I have no doubt that the material presented is true. Quite a bit of it comes from Obama himself. I found about a third of the book "already knew that" because I had read Obama's autobiography (Dreams of my Father). No bombshells there.

One third I would put in the "so what?" category. So he's (maybe) a secret smoker? So he has lifted quotes from other politicians' speeeches? So he absorbs and repeats catchy phrases from movies. Who cares??!!

But the last third I did find disturbing. I.e., his meddling in the Kenyan Presidential elections (and in my view backing the wrong man); or the Radical Islamic ties of Resko (Did you think "Tony Resko" was Italian? I did. He's Syrian) and others in Europe financially involved in various deals that benefitted Sen Obama. It is clear that Obama learned "the Chicago Way" well and benefitted greatly from playing the game.

So, I still find myself undecided and am still trying to learn more about all the Candidates. If you are undecided, and if you have not read Obama's books, I would recommend this book. Otherwise, not.

1 stars Sketchy, full of holes

2008-08-14     50 of 88 found this review helpful

It seems on the surface compelling, however many of the assertions in the book are presented without solid fact or footing. Many sources present hearsay and most of the book is based on assertion rather than fact. For example, trying to tie voting record to a politicians past is rather disingenuous seeing as how EVERY politician is guilty of that.

It is all mostly a regurgitation of what is already known with some interviews here and there.

Not "real" journalistic quality at all.

5 stars So some internet "rumors" turn out to be true!

2008-08-07     50 of 86 found this review helpful

I bought this book initially to see if it provided any detail or documentation about the internet rumors that have dogged Obama. Interestingly enough, it provided me with the biographical details that explain why most of these so-called "rumors" were instigated. I now realize that many of the rumors came about because the Obama camp and the main stream media have been less than forthcoming about his history. For example, let's take the "Obama is a Muslim" rumor. While it is true that there is no evidence that he is a current, practicing Muslim, Corsi does provide and document ample evidence that Obama was heavily exposed, if not completely immersed in the Muslim culture during his formative years in Indonesia. Here's a link to a photo of Obama's Indonesian school registration papers that list his religion as "Islam".

http://texasdarlin.wordpress.com/2008/08/13/breaking-photo-documents-barry-soetoro-indonesian/

Corsi goes on to say that he is not accusing Obama of being a covert Muslim but that Obama and his campaign have hidden and obfuscated the facts about this aspect of his biography as well as his voting history, his personal friends, his history as a community organizer and politician in Chicago, and more. It's Obama's lack of transparency that is his downfall.

To his credit, Corsi does not even address some of the more salacious rumors (i.e. Larry Sinclair/Donald Young) which may or may not be true but for which there is nothing but circumstantial evidence. And there are other aspects of Obama's past (like failure to provide a legitimate certified paper birth certificate) that are true but that Corsi fails to address--probably because events had not progressed to that point when his book went to the publisher.

Overall, I was impressed with Corsi's intelligent, logical argument against Obama as POTUS using verifiable documentation to make his case. At this point, if the Obama supporters have specific data (vs screaming "Swiftboat") to counter what he has said in his book, I'd be interested in reading that as well.

5 stars Interesting partisan examination of Obama

2008-09-11     49 of 79 found this review helpful

As a native Chicagoan whose family was involved in Democrat Machine politics, I am amazed at the gentle treatment he has been accorded by the media in general. In Chicago and surrounding Cook County, you do not get elected if you are not part of the system. It is as simple as that. Obama's association with Rezko and other major players in the Machine should have prompted full scale investigations by at least the local media. Only one Chicago Tribune reporter has been dogged in investigating Obama's past, but he has found many doors closed to him.

Corsi makes it absolutely clear that he is a partisan and sees little, if any, good in Obama. Democrat and left-wing partisans have accused Corsi of many things, but "The Obama Nation" seems relatively well researched. Those of us who have ben tracking Obama will find little that is new. Almost everytyhing in the book has been reported elsewhere, though not in the mainstream media. Needless to say, there are those who believe if something didn't appear in The New York Times, it obviously isn't true. Such people won't believe anything Corsi says.

For many, this detailed examination of Obama will be their first exposure to Obama's past and they may be very surprised at many of the things the mainstream media has been silent about.

As noted, Corsi is an unabashed partisan. In many instances where all the facts are still unknown, he tends toward conjecture. Still Corsi seems more fact oriented than Seymour Hersch or Robert Fisk.

"The Obama Nation" is an interesting read for those already ill-disposed toward Obama and, perhaps more importantly, those independents who think for themselves and want to know more about the candidates than their handlers would like.

4 stars Audio book is enjoyable

2008-08-06     49 of 83 found this review helpful

I purchased the Audio Book of Corsi's Obamanation. I find myself anxious to get to work in the morning simply to hear more.

I'm half way through and must say that the book raises several issues that I believe Obama should have the opportunity to comment on or refute.

What interests me the most, being someone who does not know this man, is the pattern of beliefs that he appears to share with some well know left wing radicals and activists, yet the public persona of the man is vastly different. I don't think many young people have a clue about the man. The book clearly shows us how his beliefs have been developed, similar to the evolution of Clarence Thomas' shown in his autobiography.

Let me name just one person who has influenced Obama, as to know this man's beliefs is to know Obama's approach to social and civil activsm---Saul Alinsky. Alinsky is brought up several times in the book. Obama appears to have mastered his playbook more so than did Hillary Clinton, who wrote a thesis on the man's teachings. In fact, I'm sure the Clintons are kicking themselves for not being more aggressive in their campaign.

And what are the teachings of Saul Alinsky? Simply put, that the end justifies the means. If it means lying, betraying, misleading your followers and enemies so be it. The objective is to redistribute the wealth of this country, from the hands of the rich and powerful to the have nots.

The book thus far is painstakingly thorough. It's obvious that considerable research went into the book. I had the impression that Corsi is saying that Obama has the potential to do good things and in time may rise above those "negative figures", based on most American standards of thinking, that have influenced and brought him success, such Wright, Tony Rezko (not an Italian btw, but a Syrian with ties to Saddam Hussein), Malcolm X, The Black activists of the 60s, William Ayers etc.

I'd like for someone like O' Reilly to sit down with Obama and give him the chance to comment on Corsi's work as I will tell you, unless he refutes the bulk of what is written here, the American Public will truthfully fear him and not vote for him.

I'd enjoy to hear your remarks if you've read or are reading the book too.

So, here I was looking for a book that would balance out the Obama campaign, at least in terms of unearthing any unknown or "quieted" information about him and his policies. Instead, I got taken for a total ride.

If I had known that I'd be just as well off with a book by Ann Coulter, then I wouldn't have bothered. Coursi (the author) does a lousy job of trying to sew up bad references and inferences into some sort of a half-case against the man. It really winds up that Corsi just doesn't like Obama and is willing to imply, distort and sometimes even overlook total untruths about the man to support his opinion.

I feel robbed. I was willing to give it a chance, but I'll be sticking to better books in the future. I know I was taking a chance anyway being that he was incahoots with the Swift Boat Veterans group (which turned out to be the biggest bunch of liars), but hey - sometimes you can't bat 1000, right? I think from now on I'll only be buying candidate-critical books if they are able to stand a long test of time.

Many of the so called "facts" in this book come from the same "sources" as the shameless "email" rumors! It's GREAT to read a book you don't necessairly agree with just to hear another person's view, but people are going to be quoting this garbage as "gospel", and that's just ridiculous! On Larry King last night, Corsi tries to give the impression that he has no hidden agenda because he's voting for neither a Rep or a Dem in this election, but it's publisher, Mary Matalin sure IS!

People could read this book with more objectivity IF the book had come out at no paticular time! The timing of it's release blatantly shows that Corsi wants to use his slander to not only make money but control another election! People are really pathetic if they turn that kind of power over to this shriveled up, bitter, bigoted old man (Jerome Corsi)!!!

Read this book at the library...don't waste your money!

5 stars LIBERALS: BE AFRAID.VERY AFRAID

One of the most deeply researched books I have ever read. Obama is a DANGEROUS man. He is pro crime, pro terror, anti rich and hangs out with a know terrorist William Ayres!!!!

Harvard PhD's KNOW how to legitimately research..
Buy it. It will change your mind to vote FOR McCain. the lesser of 2 evils...
Mc Cain is NO Reagan. But he is also no sanctimonious, race baiting, imposter of a candidate. HILLARY WOULD BE FAR SUPERIOR TO OBAMA. IF YOU HAVE TO VOTE: HILLARY

5 stars Don't believe the liberals trying to ruin the rating of this book

It's a good read and well researched. Everything stated in the book is backed up with footnotes and are factually correct- Yes, it makes Obama look like a bad candidate, but maybe that's because he really is a bad candidate- but decide for yourself. Buy a copy of your own and give them as gifts.

1 stars Not worth the paper.

Thank you for the effort but if a serious look at the candidate Barack Obama is what you want you will need something that is factually correct. This book is filled with errors from cover to cover and to use it as a basis for argument or reference you will appear misinformed. Kept looking is my opinion on this book.

5 stars Thoughtful

Finally, something of substance on the untouchable one. Check out the number or sources. This book was also thoroughly law-suit-proofed.

If people were willing to approach this with an open mind, they would not support Mr. Obama.

1 stars #1 book in the nation, because right wing groups buy bulk and give it away

Bigot neocon Jerry Corsi does not do his homework. For example, take a look at the footnotes for this new set of bound paper with hateful, untrue words printed upon them. Footnotes are used to cite sources, usually things like news articles and known experts on a subject. Jerry Corsi cites HIMSELF. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about this idiot, nothing will. You probably believe that Iraq still has WMD, and that Iraqis and Iranians, not Saudi Arabians trained in Afghanistan, attacked us on 9/11. Don't buy this book. It only encourages the further destruction of America, the greatest nation on Earth.

1 stars Are you the type who thinks for him/herself? Then skip this book!

2008-08-16     44 of 94 found this review helpful

Like anyone who has gone through a couple of other books of Mr. Corsi, I almost expected what this book may have to offer: a lot of outright lies (because he chose to write them even after they were discredited by neutral writers in the mainstream investigative media), half-truths, and other fibs grownups would scarcely believe.

If you hate thinking for yourself, please, by all means, read this book! But remember, it isn't free, though mine was - I wouldn't think of paying for it now that I have read it.

1 stars A Political Tract of Lies and Falsehoods

2008-08-14     44 of 83 found this review helpful

Here we have another book by swiftboater Corsi, one of those Republican "operatives" whose job is to further that old Bush tactic that iF you say it enough times it must be true. OOh he's a muslim...ooh he spent time overseas as a younster, he's corrupted...ooh he smoked pot as a kid (along with 87 million other Americans) - maybe he's still doing it...ooh he's a baaad man. Complete and utter tripe. The only reason it's selling is the Republican Party bought the run of books.

2 stars Confusing Agenda

2008-08-13     44 of 75 found this review helpful

Jerome Corsi's publications are a strange grouping: in Black Gold Stranglehold his theme is that oil is not a fossil fuel, and that its scientific definition as a fossil fuel is a conspiracy of the oil companies, in Late Great USA, the Coming Merger with Canada and Mexico his theme is that George W Bush is in a conspiracy to create a North American Union, his other works revolve around the Minuteman and the need to dismantle all types of government supported financial programs: social security, etc.

At the end of the day, he appears to have many extreme views which have no scientific basis and little to no basis on fact. He does do a lot of research and footnotes but then makes many unsubstantiated pronouncements.

What is troubling is to read the many emotive reviews listed above. Corsi is an extremist. He appears to think anyone who does not agree with him is a radical liberal. With the Obama book as with his other previous works he follows the same process, he takes some factual information and then postulates, assumes or distorts.

Whether readers are Republican , Democrats, or Independents, Corsi's works need to be viewed with great skepticism.

5 stars Buy this book!!!

The author has done our nation a great service with this book. Obama's close associations with racists and terrorists make him Unfit For Command. Everything is well documented. Here is the truth that his allies in the MSM refuse to tell you.

5 stars Entertaining and scary at the same time

If you've heard all the conservative commentators vet Obama, than you may only find half of this intriguing as you've already become numb to all of it; however, if you only heard through the grapevine what Obama is all about, than this book will really knock your socks off. [...]

1 stars Just like his last book..... already proven to be fabricated lies

2008-08-13     43 of 92 found this review helpful

[...] if you research 90% of his "facts" you will find they are half truths and bold faced lies.

Trying to link Obama to the massacring of christians in Kenya as well as painting him black liberation movement advocate are both enormous stretches of the imagination with no solid evidence even hint at them being true. Just because his pastor used his soap box to sprout his own brand of politics doesnt make the thoughts and ideas those of Obama himself.

Yes Obama is inexperienced but he also hasnt been around long enough to be corrupted. I would take a man with principles and fresh ideas over another rich white "good ol' boy".

5 stars Excellent book reveals Obama's true character

2008-08-13     43 of 85 found this review helpful

This book is SHOCKING beyong your wildest imagination!!! And the ugly facts are not being challenged by Obama or the far-left media.(Because it's all true.) Just a few pages are enough to make a (normal) person's head spin. The book is meticulously researched and thoroughly supported. If Barak Hussien Obama were to actually get elected president of the U.S., it truly would be "An Obama Nation"! Thank God for Dr. Corsi's timely work.

5 stars Be audacious--read this book!!!!!

The cult of personality is generally a power grab. And no doubt this man has been and is still associated with very sophisticated individuals who are accustomed to having political figures firmly in their control.

Dr. Corsi does not sling mud, he just happened to have uncovered, and is exposing, some very questionable stuff. He is no dummyl--READ THIS BOOK at the very least to find out what a most informed and sophisticated political researcher has discovered about this very popular, charismatic guy. Remember, just because someone is likeable, would seem to represent a PC voting choice (no doubt playing into white guilt!), and speaks well (he HAS been well-groomed, politically) does not necessarily qualify them to lead the "free world" (although the way things are going one wonders how "free" this part of the world really is anymore!)

INFORM YOURSELF and make your own INFORMED decision. Also, it would make sense to read _Obama, the Postmodern Coup_ so that you will have the two main research-driven collections of facts (and yes, some opinions) NOT in favor of this man for president, even if, PERHAPS ESPECIALLY IF you are a hard-core supporter of Obama. Then you will be informed about what issues would need to be addressed to win over people who are less informed or undecided.

4 stars A Dangerous Man

2008-08-10     43 of 82 found this review helpful

Barack Obama is a dangerous man though not for many of the reasons given by Jerome Corsi in OBAMA NATION. Corsi focuses too heavily on areas of less than convincing import such as Obama's ties to radical Islam and crooks in real estate. Corsi is far more compelling when he highlights that which is`irrefutable: Obama's self-professed economic policies of tax increases and his clear lightweight status as a politician. Corsi includes a voluminous list of footnotes for those who wish to check the veracity of his statements. One thing emerges clear: for those who hail Obama as the catalyst for Change We Can Believe In, they will have to refute Corsi's contention that Barack Obama is simply ill prepared to lead this country as it teeters on economic collapse.

Couldn't help myself when I saw this was on the bestseller list, but fortunately it was loaned to me and I didn't go out and buy it. Lost track of the lies early on..........Personally, if someone wants me to vote for McCain, you're going to have to tell me what his position is on the issues. Unfortunately, once again another author spent a huge amount of
