Sometimes you've got to give a little to get a little. In this case, Phil Gordon gives a plethora with his insight to no limit holdem. Regardless of your skill level, there are so much to gain from this. The key to this is not just what he's saying, but "how" he breaks down the game. Be patient, read thoroughly and you'll realize that Phil's teachings reflect the decision making & question making necessary for holdem success. The black book is a great intro. The green book reviews the fundamentals such as betting, position, strategies, and more. The blue book sums up the first two books and shows actual game scenarios and how they were played out (or shouldnt have been).

For some valuable and very entertaining info., get this set. It will bring you much more in return like it has done for my game.

5 stars Unusual and rewarding

There are a lot of poker books out there now, and most of them have at least some value in generally outlining how to play solid, aggressive poker live or online. Phil Gordon's set is a little different from most books, and in a good way.

Gordon's emphasis isn't just on how to play medium pocket pairs, or how to calculate pot odds; he is interested in the whole experience of being a poker player, of living the poker lifestyle and basing your life choices around that kind of an ethic. He will cover starting hand requirements, yes, but he also wants the reader to ask himself important questions about the kind of person/player he really is, wants to be, or has the stomach for, particularly in the Black Book. I can't think of another poker author who has approached the subject from this angle.

The Green Book gets more into strategy, and the Blue Book is all strategy, tactics, and sample hands to go through with Phil, and they are all well worth reading, studying, and rereading. Along the way there is a lot of relatively lighthearted poker banter, some name-dropping, and good charm and humor; Phil Gordon is a very entertaining story teller and writer. But the heart of it is the analysis and the attitude, and both shine through with insight and value. There are a lot of hands reviewed where Gordon gives names of his opponents, how they played, how he played and why, and of course he harpoons Hellmuth more than once, as who wouldn't given the chance? It's all done with wit, humor, and penetrating analysis.

Gordon's books are not the heavy lifting of Sklansky or the workbooks of Harrington. Nonetheless they are valuable learning tools, and a reminder that especially in poker there is no single perfect way to play. Add that to his optimistic and invigorating attitude towards life in general, and these books are well worth your time and money.

5 stars EXCELLENT

EXCELLENT trio of books for novice to expert. Phil does a great job of explaining as well as challanging you to think. your game will definately improve after this book. Put it together with Dan Harringtons 3 books and you can't find a better poker combo period. 2 contrasting style of players but overall the same message. Just a great trio of books.

5 stars Educating all types of players, and taking your game further..

Phil Gordon, a world class player, although he's not the greatest one, he certainly knows a lot about the game. This a collection that every serious player must have, yes some advanced players may think that they didn't really need to read the Little Black Book, but the truth is that all three of them have information you never knew existed, and that you couldn't really find in other books. The Little Black Book is a great introduction to the world of poker, The Little Green Book gives you the formula to playing a strong profitable game, and The Little Blue Book is simply the key to take your game from a very good, solid Amateur, to thinking like a pro and succesfully compete in tournament poker. Phil Gordon is now in my opinion one of the greatest educators in poker, right along with Sklansky, Harrington, Caro, Brunson and many others..

I have read 15-20 poker booksa and these are among the best I have read in a long time. Phil's dedication to the game and his committment to keep learning is well communicated in an easy to read style. It keeps you entertained and makes you feel ready to be more aggressive with a better understanding of what winning poker is about.

4 stars A good deal, written in a breezy style

This box set will cover the absolute beginner up to a fairly strong player. Gordon writes in an engaging and lively style and admits his bad moves when he plays them. Like the titles say, these are little books, so they are quick reads. Great for reading a few pages before bed. That does make them a little less dense with helpful information--combined with writing style and size, Harrington's books seem fuller. The green book is probably the one that you will be refering back to the most as it deals with core play, with the blue book a close second for information on particular situations. Like most books out there, it focuses most of its ink by far on tournament play. I wish it had more information on shorthanded and low-stakes cash games. The black book does touch upon low-stakes games, but really glosses over strategy there.

BTW, if you are living abroad, this box set is a great deal. Not only do you have a bigger discount than buying the three books individually, but also the box set counts as one item when shipping, not three. So saved ten dollars on shipping.

5 stars Possibly as good as Harringtons

Phil Gordon hit a bullseye big time. Why there are so few reviews for this book set and so many for Harrington's is beyond me. This is a must have for someone who wants to get better at hold'em.

Gordon uses hand example and shows a lot of tips that may be common sense to some pros, but very few others.

This will forever be a classic set.

5 stars Excellent!!! A must have for any poker library.

This box set is A must have. Before I got these books I never would do to good in tournaments and pretty much brake even in cash games, but after I read these books I found out what I was doing wrong. And I was excited when I won the next tournament I entered. All in all this box set is a must-have in my opinion.

5 stars Great Gift for Poker Lover

I got this for my husband and he hasn't stopped reading it. He will only pause to tell me something he thinks I might want to hear. 8-) I'm not a poker person, but with all the Poker on TV that I've seen (because of my husband) and listening to him endlessly talk about it, I think if these books have kept his attention the way they have, they must be good.

I don't know if that helps you but knowing my hubby, anything that pulls him away from playing poker must be good.

5 stars they look great, fun and easy to read

As I said, this set looks great on my "poker books shelf" :) But aside that, it's a great read. Even the black book with many interesting details about poker. Green book is well written but my favorite is the blue book. It was so valuable to me to have a free ride threw profesional's poker mind. Highly recommend it.

Bought the set for my son for Christmas, and started reading them myself. Phil Gordon gives insight into the mind of a poker player. His book is straight forward and easy to read.

I highly recommend it for newbies or intermediate players trying to better their games.
