The best!I was looking for something that could help me watch what I ate. I was amazed at the girth of material contained herein. And the accompanying photos really add to the whole process. The book is easy to read and, if you are looking to save calories--and maybe a little money, too--it's a nobrainer. What I liked was that it was the latest edition and that meant it was most up to date. I'm also going to look into the restaurant guide, too, as that is coming out soon. I think this author really has his finger on the pulse of American eating. This is one not to be missed. Another good one, Goodbye, Fatty! Hello, Skinny! How I Lost Weight And Still Ate The Foods I Loved-Without Dieting.
Great series, constantly updated -- but does accuracy suffer in the process?I love this book, its organization, its attitude; but my confidence in it was shaken when I came upon (p. 195) Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise, a household staple of mine, classified as a "Not That" because it allegedly contained 90 calories and 10 grams of fat.
Those are the stats for regular Hellmann's! Hellmann's Light actually has 35 calories and 3.5 grams of fat.
The "Eat This Not That" franchise has morphed quickly into quite a juggernaut, with updates published frequently. What a job this must be! But have the multiple editions come at the cost of the accuracy we (and Oprah!) depend on the ZincZenko/Goulding team for?
Guys, please, at least put an "Erratum" page on your website.
Good Reference
This is a well-researched, eye-opening report with plenty of information about bad and good foods that are served at well known restaurants.
The book consists of eight chapters, each chapter being focused on a separate issue such as: 1. Foods recommended for every day, and foods to always avoid; 2. The best and worst restaurant meals; 3. Strategies for eating right when dining out; 4. Advice for holiday eating; 5. Strategies for grocery shopping; 6. The ultimate guide to healthy beverages; 7. What to eat in various situations (stress, tiredness, etc.); 8. Eating guide for children
Each chapter provides tons of helpful information presented in a simple, but effective layout. It is an easy and fast reading, with some very nice and helpful pictures. The author made a good job in creating alternative, healthy menus for almost everyone and in any situation.
I especially like the comparison of good and bad meals. For a restaurant of your choice you can find presentation of good and bad meals with detailed information of why they are either good or bad (calories, fat and sodium content, etc).
Of course, it is not possible to list all restaurants in one book so the author concentrates on the chain restaurants that are predominantly known as fast food places. This is a limitation. The other thing that I noticed is that the primary focus is on a fat/sodium contents of the meals discussed. We all know that carbohydrates are not to be ignored when analyzing foods and their effect on our health. This, in my opinion, is a major shortcoming of the book, and for that reason I am subtracting 1 star from the rating.
Otherwise this is a nicely published and useful reference book and I recommend it for all health-conscious people especially those that watch their weight. "Live 150 -- Your Body Maintenance Handbook" is another very useful title that I highly recommend. Especially useful is the chapter titled: Obesity - Your Worst Enemy. Check it out.
Eat This, Not That updated!!I was so happy to see that Dave and Matt came out with an updated version of Eat This, Not That! I'm excited about all new comparisons on the restaurant pages. AND the 2010 version brings in some of my other favorite aspects of their other books (like the "Top Swaps" Dave and Matt unveiled in ETNT Best & Worst Foods in America.) I also love the "On a Budget" chapter, which is awesome since I cook more often in this recession.
For Beginners OnlyThere was little helpful information for me in the Eat This, Not That book I purchased. I am, as most people I know are, self-educated (books and some news) about what to eat, and what not to eat due to wanting to control my weight and health.
The recommendations in this line of books is targeted to to processed food ppl. I should have reviewed the reviews I read before buying in more detail. I was totally unhelped.
In fact, I read through it debating the decision factors cited and arguing against them in my mind. Many reasons for choosing did not mention vital OTHER issues nor were the comparisons consistent in promoting healthy eating decisions.
This is purely a brand choosing tool with some nutritionist info, which helps you buy processed food items for the most part, which none of us should be eating much of.
If you want to be educated and wow'd, buy Julia Ross' books (Diet Cure & Mood Cure) or In Defense of Food by Michael Pullen (sp?).
Flawed but better than nothingI read the yellow and the orange books from the library. Glad I did before I decided to buy them. I have few problems with these books.
-Many of the items on the "eat this" this are still horribly bad for you.
-Some things on the "eat this" list in one book is on the "not that" list in another book.
-Many of the items they compare, I don't buy to begin with
-When I wrote items down to get at the grocery store I discovered the brand I was already buying was better than what they recommended.
-Some the items they recommend I have tried and they taste horrible. Apparently this is not taken into account.
-Some things are not explained or may not be even be true. Example, they recommended a certain brand of pasta but looking at the nutrition it was no better than any other pasta. Why is it better? Are companies paying these guys?
I give this an ok rating because it does have some good advice to consider and is a good starting place though the book is flawed. I recommend you get the book on loan, not buy it. And just go ahead in the store and compare the labels on the products you buy to others like it. And if you frequent a restaurant get the nutrition menu on the way out so next time you can pick the lesser of the evils that you still like.
Contradictory statementI recently bought the 2010 Eat this Not That The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution and also The Eat this Not That Supermarket Survival Guide. I read the No-Diet Weight Loss Solution first and in the section of "frozen treats" it said to eat Creamsicle Orange & Raspberry which I went out and bought right away. Then I started to read the Supermarket Survival Guide and in the fruit bars and frozen treats section, this same item was in the not to eat section. What gives? I wonder how many other items are listed as to eat and not to eat in their books. I do like these books however very much. I am learning lots. Just concerned over them recommending this item to eat and not to eat. I hope the author looks at this.
Great addition to the seriesThis is a great addition to the series, with updated information and more ways to lose weight. There are also new recipes in here, which is great! I'm glad they came out with a new one because I was curious as to how various new products I have seen in the supermarket have fared. I have lost 45 pounds by using the information in the older books. If you're going to get this book, and you cook at home all the time like I do, you should also purchase the Supermarket Survival Guide. There are more recipes in there, and you will also learn a great deal about what you're really eating when you buy something from the supermarket. I really wish that the 2010 edition focused more on supermarket food because I almost never eat out, but they did a great job with this book. I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to lose weight or just eat better food, because, you will absolutely lose weight if you use this information.
If you do eat out, this book is also great, because they even give the restaurants grades. Just going to a different restaurant can help you in the battle against the bulge, and with obesity rates on the rise, we need all the help we can get!
How to cut your calories in half with simple exchangesI bought this book to simply skim over it a little and see the calorie differences in restaurant and fast food meals. But I could not put this book down and ended up reading every page. It is a very comprehensive guide to making smart decisions while eating out or in the supermarket and how to save thousands of calories, but it is much more than that. It is a nutritional guide showing the best foods to eat, whole foods like eggs, oranges, kiwi fruit, honey, avocados, dark chocolate, salmon, and other nutrient dense filling foods. The books main concept is how to choose the less of two evils. Like foods are deceptive, A Burger King Whopper at 770 calories has 230 more calories than a 540 calorie McDonald's Big Mac, if you have to have a burger and you choose the Big Mac instead of the Whopper you were going to have you just saved 230 calories. After ten meals you have saved 2,300 calories and this is just one change.(The Hardee's/Carl Jr. six dollar burger has 890 calories.) Remember that each pound of stored fat has 3500 calories, if you can cut 500 calories a day out of your current diet you will lose a pound a week. this book shows you how to make better decisions in the restaurant, fast food joint, supermarket, and in the kitchen.
This book really opened my eyes about restaurants. Along with being very expensive they also serve ridiculous size portions and add a days worth of salt to many dishes. The worst offender is Outback with its 2,580 calorie baby back ribs. How about On the Border Dos XX Fish Tacos at 2,550 calories, or Uno's Pizza Skin appetizer weighing it at 2,400 calories. Most milk shakes contain over a thousand calories but Cold stone's PB&C Shake contains a whopping 2,030 calories. However you can make smart decisions eating out and this book grades all the national chain restaurants and fast food restaurants and gives you the options that are smart choices when you measure calories, fat content, and sodium. The authors also made this book a fun and easy read. This book is information you must have to make smart eating decisions for yourself and your family and to win the war on obesity and weight gain. If you eat out a lot you can literally cut your calorie consumption in half by eating what this book recommends at the same restaurant or going to another where the same item has half the calories. You can also save a ton at the supermarket with simple changes. Very painless weight loss plan. I highly recommend.
Helped me lose 11 lbs in One monthI bought this book because I was going on a weight loss challenge. It was to lose 10 lbs in a month. I did no workouts. Just followed the book. Watched what I ate and went on a few short walks. Really good info inside this book. Looking to get the others. Would I recommend it to anyone..... YES I WOULD
Small Changes Lead to Big ResultsI was given this book when I announced my decision to eat more healthy foods. I followed the advice in the book and started buying only "eat this" good foods. After a month I noticed my clothes were much looser. After three months I had lost fifteen pounds--and I wasn't even been trying to lose weight! I just started making the sensible and healthy eating choices recommended in this book and I have lost ten percent of my body weight. I have more energy, and I don't get the terrible cravings that I used to have after work and in the middle of the night. I thought I was pretty good at reading food labels, but this book has taught me so much more. It's great! I take it with me every time I go to the grocery store.
Eat This and Not ThatSimple, no nonsence guide to help you make intelligent choices in what you eat. It's not a book to just be read, but to be constantly referred to; I keep my copy in my backpack, and consult it often. But let me warn you; some of the revelations are going to shock you. For instance; did you know that at Cold Stone creamery, EVERY drink one of their regular line of shakes contains a MINIMUM of 1,000 calories, 92 Grams of Sugar, and 1.5 grams of trans fat? And that's just for their Small Shake! Did you know that pre-made guacamole can contain as little as 2% of Avacado? That Turkey Bacon isn't any better for you than Pork Bacon? Neither did I! But these facts, as well as thousands of others, are all readily available in ETNT.
Not exactly what I thought it wasAlthough this book is very informational, I didn't realize it only covered restaurants. Otherwise, very good book.
Eh...Not really impressed with this book. I borrowed it from a friend out of curiosity, so I'm glad no money was wasted (on my part). I guess if you're heavily into processed food and you shop more at fast food joints than a grocery store, then this book is for you. At the end of the day, the "better" recommendations are still really, really bad for you regardless of the lesser caloric/fat content. Nevertheless, I guess you could lose weight from this book... but being healthy is a totally different issue.
And I thought I knew what I was eating...I really thought I was doing a good job making the right choices - especially while eating out. I bought this book for my in-laws who are trying to lose weight and having a hard time. I knew they make poor choices, but I found a lot in this book that set me straight. How can we get the food manufacturers to stop 'poisoning' us and making us fat with all the crap they put in our food?
An eye opening book....
Great seriesIf you are going to buy any of this series, this is the one to get. It covers a lot of stuff from restaurants, healthy foods that cure and more. I especially love the fact that they give you a chapter on how to save money AND calories when shopping!
Get it now! You'll be glad you purchased this book.
(1) USEFUL: The specific recommendations regarding restaurant & grocery store foods (i.e., eat this ______, not that ______) are useful.
(2) INTERESTING: The specific facts regarding the calorie and fat content of restaurant & grocery store foods are interesting
(3) IMPORTANT: The most important thing, however, is the overall mindset it recommends and helps to set (i.e., replace high fat, high sugar, high calorie foods with lower calorie foods). Many times you can eat the same "thing" (e.g., a personal pan pizza), but eliminate dozens of gramms of fat from clogging your artersies and hundreds of calories from the _______ part of your body (<--- you fill in the blank).
The sections that discuss what terms like "all natural" and "multi-grain" REALLY mean (and don't mean), and comments about high fructose corn syrup are also important, even if they seemed to ignored periodically in the foods they recommend.
Once you devour this book, you're certain to be glad you did and likely want to share the mental meal with family & friends.
This book can change your life. Finally, a simple answer to the eating and shopping dilemma of too many choices -- and too many bad ones, especially if you're on a long drive and faced with only fast food. Love the format. The photos tell the story in a real-life way you can take with you to the grocery store or, if you have to, Bob Evans. The website is cool, too. Who knew the danger lurking in 'spicy tuna roll' sushi?
interestingI liked the information in it but I felt it would only be a little help. They need to combine several of the books to make it worth the money.
Great informationGreat to know this information even if you are not on a diet and just like to be aware of what you are putting in your body.
Dr. John E. Bell author of Invasion of the Baby DaddyI enjoyed reading this book, it is a real guide to how to eat and keep a healthy diet especially for people like me who like food. Great read indeed.
LIVE AND LEARN!My daughter will NOT read, but THIS book was the number one "hit" gift of Christmas.
The whole family spent about an hour browsing through this book after it was opened (neglecting the rest of the gifts~for the time being).
It fits nicely in her purse (for quick and easy reference). It really opens your eyes to healthier choices!
Looking forward to reading the other "Eat This"... books in the series.
Eat This, Not That. Leave the book in sight."Eat This, Not That" provides concise information about choosing more nutritious and less fattening foods. It makes it clear that you don't need to DIET to maintain a healthy weight. Here you'll find simple guidelines and tips making it easier to make good food choices whether you're shopping or dining out.
I live with several people struggling with their weight, and was pleased to catch them studying the book after I "accidentally" left it on the coffee table. Whether they benefited or not remains to be seen. In any case, it's definitely a fun read.
not quite perfectEat this, not this was excellent for what it purported to do. I was disappointed because it did not have more recipes to make at home. I do not eat out a lot, so more recipes would have made it more beneficial to me. My grandson loved his copy.

Insider's Guide to the Food IndustryA great little book, packed with tons of insider info. on restaurants as well as food products. Every page gives you great tips on substituting healthier options - the author has considered not only calories but also fat and sodium content so while sometimes you don't save a lot of calories, you can still be amazed by the amount of sodium you can save. The restaurant information alone will blow your mind. The only drawback is that quite a few family restaurants in the Northeast are missing (such as Friendly's). Here's hoping they make it into the 2011 edition!
Honestly presented!I love this mans approach to food...His series of books are wonderful and were a real eye opener for me! I had no idea what I was really putting in my body when I was too lazy to cook for myself and depended on dining out to sustain me several times a week! Honestly, I make better choices today based on the material that he has gathered...Thanks David!
Practical and SimpleThis practical, simple guide will help you eat healthier, not just lose weight. I love the way it's organized with product information for both grocery items, fresh food, and restaurant food. The best of / worst of section will surprise most people. My husband is anti-dieting but has kept this book on our dining room table for reference since we received it - probably the most looked at "stay healthy" book we have in our house now. Even personally as a vegetarian, I've found really good information in it that helps me make smart choices at the grocery store and in restaurants.
couldn't be better! This is one of those rare books that you don't just read it and put it onto the shelf but keeping it by your side at all times. It is a beautifully designed, fully colored illustrated book with loads of useful information along with insightful comparisons of different food alternatives. Buying this book is the best personal investment for oneself that is sure to pay handsome dividends for years to come. I have the earlier edition but I think this most recent edition has enough new material and "explosive" insights of our current supermarket offerings to worth a new purchase.
I totally agree with the authors that the cause of obesity is not that we have too much food, but because of us not having enough "real" food. We have been fed through decades of artificial, chemically processed food addictive, cleansed by a slew of man-made ingredients that even FDA can't keep track of. We have forgotten what real natural food tastes like. After reading this book, I am now wary of those purely marketing terms that can be outright deceiving like "all-natural", "multi-grain', '0 trans-fat" etc. They are mainly perceived as "healthy" food but in reality they are far from it! With our obesity rate rising as fast as our national deficit, we really have to educate ourselves on the food that we take to gain control on our overall health-being. The authors have shown us that we could have equally satisfying meals with much less calories if we are educated on which food alternatives to go for. I applaud the initiatives that NY, CA are taking to mandate food chain restaurants to publish calories alongside their menu. It is a necessary step towards the right direction.
The secret formula to weight loss is really that simple. Fat Gain/Loss = Calories In - Calories Out. However it is by no means easy to figure out how to eat right. There is a multi-billion dollar food industry trying to sway us to the other direction. But this book will make a difference to all of us by helping us make important life-altering healthy choices. I know it will because it already make a difference to mine.
surprisedI was surprised at some of the info in this book. I showed it to friends and neighbors and they were caught off-guard as well. Turkey bacon, for instance, has so much sodium in it that it's worse for you than regular bacon! And I always got the chicken casear wrap from chick-fil-A, and found out that the salad dressing on it makes it a worse choice than the chicken nugget meal! I am going to pick up a few for family members for Christmas gifts!
Great Little BookThis book is really good to read and keep on hand, especially if you like to eat out and eat fast foods! It tells you what is better for you to eat and is also just very informative. I also got an extra for a family member as a gift.
Not What I ExpectedThe book was not in any form and more for restaurant use than the kitchen. Their was no format for looking up items.
The bigger your city, the better the bargain this will be...What a fascinating book, excellent for keeping in the bathroom and skimming it a few pages at a time. I suggest doing this AFTER a meal, or else you'll emerge hungry and on the prowl for one of their recommendations at your local chain restaurant. And that brings up the one minor flaw: if you live in a city with very few national chain outlets, you'll get a bit less useful data from the book. I now live in a city of 100,000, with another city of 100,000 twenty miles away, and yet in the combined metro area, there are no Panera Bread or Dunkin'Dougnuts outlets, for instance. I spent most of the past 35 years in a town of less than 30,000, with very few of the big national chains present. The heart of the book is to compare the nutritionally worst menu items in each joint with their truly healthiest offerings. But if you live in a large metro area, and eat out a lot, this volume is a real eye-opener. My favorite things at McDonalds, for instance, turn out to be pretty good choices, while my favorite item at Quiznos shows up to be horrible in terms of fat and calories. All restaurant frequenters who have access to most well-known chains can benefit by digesting the information in this book. If you discover that you almost always choose the healthiest, it makes you feel virtuous. If you realize that the opposite is true, it will spur you to changing your choices when a patron. The fact that some "salads" have a thousand calories, and some big burgers only 300, is a nice surprise for us carnivores.
Eat This Not That!I love this book! I've even made some of the recipes at the end and they were great! I've been on a mission to lose weight and eat better as well as encourage my husband to do the same. He's not as commited and disciplined as I am for weight loss or eating better, but as a result of my following the suggestions in this book for myself, my husband benefits without even trying! I'm so stoked by the information in this book that I plan to purchase the grocery shopping edition.
Easy read with good informationBook is very well put together. Practically every page has some relevant information on how the average person can improve your diet with out having to eat like a bird or eat tree bark type foods. Do yourself a favor and purchase it, I think you will enjoy. My 2 scents.....
Excellent book with excellent comparisons.I am into nutrition an didn't think I could learn much from these books, but I was wrong. They are compact, yet contain very important information from pesticides used, how to tell if fruit or veggies are ripe, the FDA, rodents and bugs in factories, nutritional information on product, and very good "eat this not that" comparisons.
excellent bookYears ago, I read the Diamonds' book Fit for Life and was hugely impacted by it. However, losing my ignorance on food matters was not bliss, It was a continuous struggle to buy organic, eat only fruit till 11 am, and so forth. Many a day were spent being depressed about not being able to measure up to my own impossibly high standards of what would go onto our family's dinner table. Financially, we couldn't maintain it, either.
Over the years, it became clear that this approach was causing much unnecessary stress in my life. And while I am still vigilant about foods, I have tried to simplify and turn to the supermarket for the majority of my family's food.
Enter ETNT, a great compliment to everything I already know about nutrition. The author has done your homework for you. It's all about making better choices, really. Substitute your favorite calorie, fat, carb, sodium-laden favorite with its healthier alternative which will still satisfy and save you tons of calories in the process. It's all laid out in a nice picture format - easy to absorb, great as reference.
Reading the first ETNT brought many new alternatives to our family's table, and this one is no exception.
My 14 y.o. son, who thinks he knows everything about life and who has been struggling with making healthy diet choices when the parents aren't looking, read this book and has already been trying to avoid some of the worst culprits.
As for me, as a working mother and main chef in the home, this book has brought relief. You won't find too many over processed foods on my table, but I still feel like I have the freedom to choose thanks to this book.
Fair assessmentBeing a reader of Men's Health magazine for years, I was not surprised this book made the grade. I took it to work with me as this is where I eat out the most. I was quite shocked at some of the calorie content of some things I thought were somewhat healthy. A person using this book can save themselves lots of empty calories and some time on the treadmill.
Great for making you realize what you're really eatingI enjoy these books - I think it helps make you a smarter shopper in terms of nutritional value. There easy to read - short snippets not 350 pages of scientific mumbo jumbo - a picture and the explanation of why one type of item is better than another.
Very helpful bookI think this book is so great that I keep it in my car all the time. I ordered three extra copies as gifts for some of my friends and relatives and they love it also. I also sent for the supermarket book and love it also.Eat This Not That! 2010: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution
Excellent advice!!!!If you think you were making the best choices, this is the book to read! "healthy" is not always what we think!
I am learning how to make better choices after i read the book.
Eat this, not that
I am an R.N. and was very pleased with the book- gave it to both my children. It should be required reading in school. Anyone of any age would benefit from following the advice, especially in this obese society. Also, heart disease would plummet dramatically,
Informative and motivating! When I first began to read the ETNT books, I was a little skeptical, feeling that some of the choice selections were included for their shock value only. I also wasn't sure about the verity of all of the claims. However, I purchased this book for my niece who has been asking me for guidelines for eating healthy. I was caught by the title: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution. I firmly believe in this method, and am careful to read labels and order healthier options when eating out. I thought that if I liked the approach of this book it would be a big help to my niece. Well, I liked it so much that although I have had it for a month I still haven't sent it to her! (I told her about it and she is happy to wait while I savor the contents.)
It is organized into 7 informative chapters: The Truth about Your Food; Foods That Cure; At Your Favorite Restaurants; At the Supermarket; Holidays and Special Occasions; For Kids; and On a Budget. The Index allows you to quickly find topics of most interest to you.
The most helpful parts of the book for me (and ultimately, my niece) are The Truth about Your Food, Foods That Cure, and On a Budget chapters. Included in this info is the ETNT Encyclopedia which discusses food industry labeling, and misleading advertising by restaurants and packaged goods manufacturers. Foods That Cure is a well researched, well concise guide to healthy eating, including Cutting Your Carbohydrate Footprint, and 10 Foods for a Longer, Healthier Life. This is the info my niece had requested, and this is a concise and thorough list.
My niece will find Chapter 6: For Kids, very helpful, including nutrition advice and a rundown of how popular restaurants fare in providing the best nutrition for your child.
But, absolutely the best part for me - and the reason my niece doesn't have the book yet - is the section that provides recipes for 10 dishes that cut calories and save cash (in the On a Budget chapter). You'll love the suggestions, and maybe, you, like me, will just decide to buy another book for your loved one so that you can both benefit from this awesome little book!
Good StuffThis is a really sound book about eating out. It helps those of us watching put weight find alternative to high calorie fast foods.
VERY HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR THE DIETER!This book arrived along with a Christmas gift I had ordered for a family member. During the holidays I hadn't much time to review the book, but what I saw was impressive. I can't wait to sit down and read it cover to cover and digest exactly how I can use the book to help me lose weight over the coming year.
Eat This Not That! 2010I gave this book as an early Christmas gift to my son and his wife. They didn't want to put it down to open their other gifts. They were amazed at the comparison of some of the meals at different restaurants. This book makes a fun and informative gift!
Things you should knowBought the first one last year and it was very helpful and now I bought the new 2010 one and it is also very helpful, tells you what you should look for when eating out. What foods are good for you and what foods have the most calories, fats, sugars, sodium etc.It lists many of the popular and fast food restaurants in the country.
I definately recommend it,great Holiday gift,if you don't know what to give, you can't go wrong with Eat this not That.
must have bookGreat book for anyone who is watching how and what they eat in any type of restaurant. Great info and photos.Really informative and surprising info on what we eat out and calorie counts . This also allows you to be more informed when you choose where to eat and how to order.
InterestingThis is a very interesting and informative book. I am not sure overall how much of a difference it will make in our eating habits since we eat pretty healthy already.
Great bookGreat book. Well worth the money. Very easy to understand and very informative. If you care about what your family is eating, this book will help steer you in the right direction.
Great book!Very great book! I have learned a lot about restaurants that I did not know before reading this! This book has changed my outlook on some of the restaurants and I will never eat at some of those again. What a great book!
It's just OKAYVery informative book, but that is all it is, informative. It did help me in making wiser choices about food, but I don't eat fast food every single day so it's just okay. I would never buy another one of these books, I'll just research online.
Idiot proofI am often confused and overwhelmed by what I need to know about food and diet. This book will not tell you every single fact, but it gives concrete examples of what good food decisions look like.
Amazing book.I bought this book (last year's edition) and lost 50 lbs. (with exercise). I went from 230 lbs. to 180 lbs in 6 months. Basically it's just simple food swaps. What I like about this book the most is they're NOT telling you to NOT go to any fast food places. But if you're going to go there anyways to eat, just "eat this, not that!". If the book was just a list of food you can't eat, I would've never bought it. Telling you you can't have this or that to eat is horrible. If you can't eat things without being given replacement things you'll never lose weight because you'll feel constantly deprived. They give you simple swaps anyone can do. I cut out a lot of cheese and the pounds were just coming off. No lie. This book was ESSENTIAL to my weight loss. HIGHLY recommended!
Great reference guide for eating out. When it comes to eating out this book provides great guidelines on healthier eating. Enjoy.
2010 Eat This Not That! Packs a Punch !!!!!!Indeed, this small book packs a punch with lots of food insight with colorful and well layout of information.
I wasn't bored at all, though I expected its another health book.
This book is great for grocery shoppers and eager diners. It is packed with information we usually disregard like calorie and fat in our food menu.
A NYTimes article quoted that the epidemic of obesity is staggering among lower class that tends to feed on cheap fast-food loaded with unhealthy contents. This book can help educate more people.
I particularly like those summary research on foods that boost metabolism or brain function. I hate garlic, but now I have to reinforce myself to choose what's right.
Going back to garlic --- The book states this is a brain boosting ingredient. Wow!
I feel more informed. Of course, I have read lots of health-related articles online and newspaper, not to mention Doctors TV, but I did learn extra with this 2010 edition.
great information to haveAs somebody who watches what he eats, this is good information to have. A no-diet weight loss solution? Maybe. It certainly helps to keep your calories, fat, and things of limited nutritional value in check, but junk good, even if it is a little better for you than something else, is still junk food. This book will at least point you in the right direction though.
I enjoyed this book because I like learning new things. Thanks to it, I have a much greater awareness of the food available to me.
If you're looking for a good start on a more healthy diet, get this one.
Amazing BookThis is one of the best, most sensible books I have ever read. I use it constantly when I am shopping or making a list. My family has already lost weight just changing a few things that have been so easy! There is a lot of hidden information regarding what we all eat and this book helps us all find the truth about it. THANK YOU David!!!
Excellent books;I love all of these books which I purchased from Amazon and refer to them often. I hope the author writes more of them.
Smart way to lose weight.I bought this for home, and the restaurant one for the office. I consult them daily. I have lost forty pounds in four months by not being tricked into eating something I felt was good for me, but was loaded with calories. This is a very good reference guide. It makes no sense to diet without these books.
Eat this bookThis is a great book for what I use it for
-lots of pictures & matching with your favorite resurants
-almost perfect for me
Great book! The book arrived even sooner than the posted date and it was in perfect condition. I loved reading it and I refer to it all the time for help in making healthy choices without feeling deprived!

Eat This, Not That (2010)My wife and I have enjoyed the book. However, we enjoyed the4 2009 edition much better.
A good staple to the houseThis book is very simple and helpful. I try to bring with me to the grocery store or at least when I write out my shopping list reference this book. the one thing i wish it had was the generic brands from walmart.
WOWThat's really the most succinct way of describing the effect of this book. Wow. It's unfathomable what the food and restaurant industries have been doing to the American consumer in recent decades. The tricks, the manipulation, the flat-out false advertising and misleading health claims, and we've been gobbling it up, no questions asked.
"Eat This, Not That" is a treasure trove of information about what are the healthiest foods to eat, and what to avoid, from restaurants to the supermarket to holidays and parties. The authors aren't afraid to name names when it comes to unhealthy food. They put both restaurant chains and name brands under the microscope, and make suggestions for dozens of food swaps you can easily make to create a healthier you.
For example, one restaurant's personal pan pizza has over 2300 calories and almost 5000 mg of sodium, while a similar pizza at another eatery has only 570 calories and 1200 mg sodium. Would you be able to tell the difference and make the right choice? Three fish tacos at one restaurant come in at 2300 calories and 4000 mg of sodium, while the competition's fish tacos clock in under 700 calories and only 900 mg of sodium. That's three times the calories and four times the sodium from restaurant to restaurant! Could you tell the difference between the two? A single slice of stuffed-crust pizza with almost 1000 calories. Coffee drinks with more sugar than two scoops of ice cream. Shakes with more fat than four Big Macs. A popular Chinese food chain's beef dish with over 10,000 mg sodium (no, that's not a typo). This is nuts!
Calorie-dense foods, hidden fat, added sugar, and super-sized portions, it's all adding to the expanding American waistline. The authors illustrate how much food has changed in recent decades. We are consuming significantly more calories than we were twenty years ago, and we've been conditioned to eat sweeter foods than in the past, due to all the added sugar in our diet. The average American eats 82 grams of added sugar every single day - empty calories that contribute nothing in the way of nutrition, but sure have the potential to add body fat. And the bad news is not relegated to restaurants alone. We are shown how "super-marketers" devise marketing schemes to trick you into thinking you are eating healthier fare. "Low-fat" often translates into "high in sugar." "Multi-grain" means nothing. Multi-grain bread turns to sugar once ingested just as fast as white bread. You have to look for WHOLE-grain to gain any health benefits. Low-fat peanut butter - loaded with fillers. Turkey bacon - no less fat, but packing more sodium. Non-fat fruit-on-the bottom yogurt - stuffed with sugar. "Healthy" adult cereals with more sugar than the kids' cereals. Would you recognize these misleading claims?
From fat-laden shakes to sugary pasta sauces, authors David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding are attempting to change the way America eats, one food at a time, and judging by the response in several restaurants, they're making some headway. Several eateries have either scaled down or eliminated many items on their menus since the first "Eat This, Not That" publication. Education is the first step to making improvements. Read the book to find out who the worst offenders are. Turn yourself into an educated consumer, and begin making your own healthier food swaps today!
Hands down - Excellent buy!I wish more people would heed the advice of the "Eat this not that" series. My boyfriend, who is a Men's Health subscriber, first got me interested in this because he would forward me emails that he subscribes to from them. I signed up too and found them helpful. We have a few of the books from this series and they are well worth the money. They show you how easy it is to make good choices about food when you know what you are looking for. These books have helped us to eat better and I looked forward to this newer version when it came out. I'm glad I bought this for us both as our health is very important to us.
(n__n) Excellent Book !!Doctors always told me that I'm borderline with Obesity and I need to make healthier choices as well as Exercise. I had no clue what healthier choices were but with this book it helps me still enjoy the fast food places but make better choices on what I pick off the menu. The pictures help a whole lot too. Eating good food without guiltI am learning a new way to eat flavorful foods without using alot of calories to make it taste good.
Taking the guess out of foodThis book is better than I expected. There were a number of items that I thought were very healthy but I was proven wrong. It is a good reference book for me.
watching what you eatThis book is very helpful, I have been watching what I eat a great asset for me.
Someone is looking out for us : )I don't eat out but this book has Grocery foods too, so I bought it.
Grocery foods are Maddeningly Deceptive!! DON'T TRUST NAMES PEOPLE!!!
Just because a package is labeled "Light" or "Lean" doesn't make it so.
Change "Light" to George. "Lean" to Martha and it means as much - NOTHING!!!
Eat This Not That 2010 is a helpful resource. It shows Best Choice products from Breakfast to Supper - Even Beer.
It cuts through the Lard of the Food Industry. It's on OUR SIDE.
