This is a great book. If you can put this into practice, you WILL see results. To get any great result with your weight loss, you do need to do work and this is a helpful tool in that area. It opens your eyes to ways to lift your metabolism that you may not have thought of before or known about - but now that you do, you can start to change. While it's ultimately aiming at a 'diet' it's focusing on raising your metabolism which helps you burn calories at a high rate - so not only will you loose weight from eating the right foods etc, but the weight lose will happen faster and in a more healthy way because your metabolism is now boosted and is working for you even when you are resting. Not that I have much to loose, but I've tried this now for one week and have noticed a big difference not only in my physical appearance but in my day to day health (with a weight loss of 8lbs already). I'm not as reliant on Coca Cola to give me my caffiene fix and I'm sleeping better at night.
This is an 8 week plan that if you put your mind to it, you can do, and it's so worth it, because not only are you going to look better, but you are going to feel better. I do already and I'm only on week one. Give it a try. It is so worth it.

When I first read Ultra Metabolism, I had the simple intention of loosing a couple of pounds. After I read and re-read the book, I was changed forever! The information and guidance given by Dr. Hyman has already made profound differences in my family's life. In just one week my skin was smooth and glowing. My daily headaches were gone after eliminating aspartame filled gum. I no longer crash at 3:00pm in need of a coffee fix. Just three days into the detox, my husband stopped snoring, after a week the dark bags under his eyes were gone, and in just two weeks, he has already lost 9lbs.
I feel healthy, educated and informed.

1 stars Please do NOT buy or read this book

Ultrametabolism: This book is a hoax!

This book is a compilation of dated research and data that is stretched and overused as far and as much as possible to make weak points that do not apply to most people. The book is not valuable in its research, information, nor advice. If you care to read on, please do, if not, please know that your money is MUCH better spent on another title on this site, or even better, a consultation with your doctor or a nutritionist who will give you advice that you need.

Sadly, most people who purchase this book will want to lose at least a few pounds and are likely looking for any advice available. But the book does not speak to most people... it uses research on the thinnest margins of society and applies that to every reader, with only the slightest mention that the information does not apply to most people. For instance, in two chapters, the author reveals that excess weight is likely due to a condition called "inflammation" and in another to abnormal thyroid condition. The author spends page after page describing this as if the information applies to most people, when in truth a. inflammation is a very broad term that cannot be applied by itself to a single medical condition, and b. the type of thyroid condition the author speaks of is present in one-half of one percent of women over age 40 and does not contribute to weight gain in most, though it does in a very small number.

Additionally, the author uses very dated research. When speaking of exercise, he claims that weight training is essential to weight loss. This has been debunked in research as early as 2004. The fact is that the numbers of people who have successfully lost and kept off weight corresponds with those who weight train, but this is more likely due to the overall dedication of people and that they stuck with it, got bored, and changed up an aerobic routine with weight training.

Moreover, the author actually claims that simply removing dairy, high fructose corn syrup, and transfats from a diet will guarantee weight loss. This is not true. These should be removed from any healthy diet, but they could not, for instance, be substituted with artifical sweeteners, lots of plant starch like potatoes, or simply an abundance of healthy food. The foods should be removed and portions must be controlled. The author says exercise is important, but not in the section where he claims that removing ingredients guarantees weight loss.

The print version of the book has childish "quizzes" in the back of the book that are designed so that most people who want to lose weight will score high. The quizzes should not be used to diagnose a condition or the severity of a condition. The audio version of the book is not well produced, and the author tends to mumble.

And finally, the book claims that the associated website is meant to be helpful. While the recipes and some other content is vaulable (and free), the author's blogs are nothing short of marketing spam for his other titles, and repeated attempts to contact anyone associated with the author or the site went unanswered.

The book does contain information that is valuable, but it is information that we all know: a healthy menu should include fruits and vegatables, lots of fiber, animal-based non-saturated fats and proteins, and carbohydrates also from fruits and vegetables. Remove trans fats and manufactured sugar, processed food, and eat slowly. Eat small meals more often. Exercise -- park far away from the office, take the stairs, and go for walks. See your doctor or get a private consultation from a nutritionist or dietician. Use common sense, be patient, and find support wherever you can.

But whatever you do, avoid this book.

Every so often we are faced with the diet book that "revolutionizes" the way we eat. Be it Ornish, Atkins or the South Beach Diet, I cannot believe the general public can be so gullible as to buy every single diet book thrown out there (the 'cabbage soup' diet anyone?).

Having read this book and being an avid dieter myself, I can only say that this book takes principles from the Atkins diet and Ornish diet and then rehashes it and says "OH BY THE WAY YOU HAVE TO EXERCISE" and proclaims all of this as something amazingly new! Unbelievable. I am only hoping that readers recognize this for the tired garbage that it is, and all the pretty packaging should not pursuade you to buy into this material.

If you're looking for a good diet, a sensible low-carb (not as extreme as Atkins) diet coupled with exercise is ALL you need. There is no quick fix. If you read this book, thats pretty much all it tells you too, but its high-handedness and coining of new terms is just so silly that I am suprised no one has been able to see through the vapidness yet.

WAKE UP EVERYONE! The only automatic weight loss that can happen is if you eat sensibly and exercise as well. Use the time you would to read this book, on a treadmill instead. Trust me on this one.

2 stars Platitudes and anecdotes

2007-02-28     68 of 111 found this review helpful

The secret of dieting is provided by the author on pages 159 and 160 -
1. "There is one thing that ... significantly extends our life span, and causes us to lose weight. What is it? Calorie restriction!"
2. "Besides eating breakfast, exercise is the only thing that has been correlated with long-term, sustained weight loss."
Those are not the words of a cynical reviewer. Those are direct quotes from the author. If you have never read a diet book and have no clue what comprises a healthy diet, then this book may be of some help. Otherwise, there is nothing new and some dubious suggestions backed by zero scientific research. Rather, they are presented as, "comprehensive medical and clinical perspectives". I also reserve a healthy dose of scepticism for any book presenting a note from the author that impies there is a vast medical, government and food industry conspiracy to keep us ignorant while only the author is prepared to reveal this "hidden knowledge".

I've read the entire book and started the phase 1 detox diet just over 7 days ago. I have completely eliminated coffee (getting caffeine only from organic green tea and 70%+ cacao chocolate - small amounts), dairy & egg, gluten and refined white sugar. I am taking the suggested supplements, eating lean organic and free range/wild meats (fish and chicken). I have taken a sauna and started a mild exercise effort. I certainly haven't lost any significant weight, and don't have any more energy. My seasonal allergies have started (although not as extreme as usual.) I have been trying to drink lots of water, and was hoping to see an improvement in my skin but not yet.

I'm lucky to live in the SF Bay Area, so the ingredients in his recipes are easy to obtain (although expensive), but I certainly don't use all his food suggestions and am concerned about the high soy content - I think it is too much. I find that most of the information in the book is common sense and I find Dr. Hyman's examples of peoples' immediate positive health responses to be extremely unlikely. There is also a huge will power component that he ignores. It's very hard to reach for nuts and fruit when proceesed food is everywhere. Plus it is very time consuming to shop, prepare, cook and clean whole organic foods. I still crave pizza, pasta and cheese and feel hungry alot. I'm eating alot of brown rice, quinoa, flax, etc. yet I am not very regular. I am hoping over the next two weeks I see better results - my metabolism certainly isn't kicking into high gear yet.

I thought this book would provide information about the glycemic index and portion size. Boy was I wrong. Let's see...only eat veggies and the occasional fish and you'll lose weight. WHAT A SURPRISE!!! So if I don't eat bread or fat or sugar or the most evil of evils (according to this guy) high fructose corn syrup I'll lose weight. REALLY?! This is basically a book on how to be a vegetarian but you apparently can eat cold water fish and somehow that doesn't count as meat. Don't waste your time.

1 stars Absolute Nonsense

Hey everybody, let's everyone invent a cool new word to sucker everybody in... it's called Ultrametabolism! The book is full of nonsensical advice and a rehash of what everyone knows but can't do: 1. more exercise 2. less consumption. It ain't that hard people! Save your money, go out for a walk once a day, cut back on the soft drinks and sweets, and you'll lose your excess baggage. Ultrametabolism HA HA HA!

3 stars Inconsistant

This book is very informative, backed up by scientific evidence and personal experience. But, it says basically the same thing as "Neanderthin" did years ago, i.e. that foods of "technology" are bad. Also, Dr. Hyman points out (correctly) that many people have soy allergies, yet his example of the Phase I diet is loaded with soy products! To sum up, eat slowly, eat early, if man created it don't eat it, get some exercise, plenty of sleep and give up the common vices. Surprise, surprise.

2 stars Not much new, hard to cook this way for families

2006-04-09     47 of 55 found this review helpful

There is a lot of useful information in this book, but I agree that this is a rehash of the "Neanderthin" plan. Everything was going along well until I got to the recipes and eating plans. Gimme a break! Not practical at all unless you're single or the whole family gets on board, because there's some strange stuff here. If you're prepared to double your grocery bill at health and specialty food stores, go for it. My traditional family would be willing to make a few concessions, but hitting the ground running with this book would get me banned from the kitchen...

5 stars Focus on health and the rest will come naturally

Mark Hyman deals with many myths associated with dieting and weight loss. He explains many not so obvious causes of gaining weight. He also reminds the reader of important rules to follow in order to keep not only thin but also healthy. All in all this is a good book for someone committed to losing weight and keeping it off. What I particularly liked about this book is its focus being shifted towards living healthy lifestyle. The author emphasizes the importance of cleansing the liver and detoxifying your whole body. This sounds to me like a revamp of the same good ideas so well presented in the book Can We Live 150 in which the author focuses exclusively on health and self-help (body cleansing, proper breathing, and using all the "natural doctors who are always with you"). Interestingly losing weight seems to be the natural outcome of one's healthy lifestyle. This has at least been so in my case.

5 stars Great book, bad title

2006-11-06     42 of 47 found this review helpful

I never would have read this book, except for a very effective promotion by AOL, because the title sounds to me like the name of a fen-phen drug. "Ultrametabolism -- your weight-loss miracle!"

But it's not. It's quite the opposite. This is only a diet book because in the course of finding the causes of his patients' multiple maladies, Dr. Hyman had them alter their diets, and found that as a side-effect, they lost weight.

Dr. Hyman cites sound research (there are end notes so you can check out the research yourself), and then, based on reason and his own practice, puts these bits of information together to show how those little bothersome ailments -- itchy feet, dandruff, itchy eyes, fatigue, reluctance to get out of bed in the morning -- as well as some more serious problems like eczema, high blood pressure, and extra weight -- can often be tracked to what we eat.

Based on this book, I put my family on a no-gluten and no-dairy diet, with the result that one daughter had great improvements in her eczema as well as a decrease in anxiety, and my two other children had improvements in their ADD symptoms, one drastically so. My fatigue has gone away, and I'm now tired of tolerating "band-aids" for problems. I'm pushing to get to root causes so that we can be as healthy as we are meant to be. I've bought this book for one friend and recommended it to many more. I also recommend it to you.

4 stars It has changed my life!!!!

2006-03-26     41 of 48 found this review helpful

I purchased this book three weeks ago and it has changed my life. I'm only on page 116 and have learned so much for this book its unbelievably. First of all, the concepts taught in this book isn't rocket science. However, it is taught in a way that helps the reader to understand exactly how certain foods affect your body and create illness. My mom has a history of stroke and is on many different medications. Since the stroke, she has modified her diet similiar to what Dr. Mark Hymen recommends and has lost a tremendous amount of weight and is in great health. She eats fresh vegetables, beans, lean meats,...etc. Her medical doctor just recently took her off of her cholesterol medication. Just today, she just decided to stop consuming items that is full of processed sugars. I believe it will do wonders for her overall help. As for me, my biggest complaint is that I am greedy. I love foods and always think about it. I've tried appetite suppressants such as dexatrim but nothing really worked long term. In the book, Dr. Hyman talked about how refined sugar causes increased appetite. You might say...this is stupid....however don't knock it before you try it. Let me tell you, I've cutted down sugar tremendously from my diet and I have to say that I get full faster and experience very little to no cravings. This is not a lie!!! This is for real!!! My skin even looks better and is less puffy.

For those who gave this book a negative review obviously did not read the book or tried any of his recommendations. Dr. Hyman does not not support a low fat, low carb, low calorie diet. It does a good job explaining that its the type of fat, carbs, and calories. There are good fats and bad fats. There are good carbs and bad carbs(full of refined and processed sugars. When you have a balance diet that is rich of the foods he recommends, we will naturally stop overeating. Actually, that is exactly what I'm experiencing now. For years, I've been overeating and stuggling with my weight. I'm just happy to know that there is such a simple solution to my problems. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution.

1 stars A Word of Caution.

2006-06-12     39 of 79 found this review helpful

As with every diet or exercise program remember to always use common sense and check with your doctor first. Don't allow yourself to be lured by all these colorful new programs that will finally "change your life".

Have you ever asked yourself why are there so many books on the market about this topic? Well, because 99% of them do not work, and the remaining 1% do so for a while. The day one is published that actually works the business will be over! So don't keep your hopes too high.

This is no exception, the reason is in your top 10 is because public television has a special on it. There is nothing new here. Actually this book is a carbon copy (to put it politely) of what "Neardenthin" said years ago.

Don't waste your time. And wait to contribute to PBS till they stop promoting this nonsensical rants.

5 stars This book changed my life

2007-03-30     35 of 36 found this review helpful

I respectfully disagree with those reviewers who claim there is nothing new in this book. They must have skipped to the last chapters and simply read the dietary recommendation at the end - and even those are different in both form and function. I have read, and been on, about every diet out there -- atkins, south beach, california, grapefruit - you name it. I have been on the Ultra Metabolism Phase 1 plan for 3 weeks, have lost 7 lbs - never feel hungry at all - but more importantly - I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER! I didn't even know I felt that bad!

You must read this book from the beginning and then all the way through - taking each of the tests and determining the areas where your body is not functioning properly. I had no idea so many of my symptoms were tied to stress and cortisol release. I have a friend who had no idea she had hormone imballances but identified them and sought a functional medicine physician to correct them - and is ecstatic - and she was a vegetarian before she even read the book. I have another friend whose breast cancer physician had her read this book and go on the diet as part of her treatment! All three of us feel transformed.

I can't recommend this book enough. I was exercising 4 days a week ,hardly eating ANYTHING, and still gaining weight, and now I know WHY and what do to about it. If you will strictly adhere to the phase 1 guidelines ( which will require shopping at your local Whole Foods or natural foods market ), I bet you will lose weight and feel great doing it too.

This is the answer for me! I am not allowed to exercise because I had polio as a child. My weight has gradually increased, even though I tried to eat reasonable amounts. I have been on the Ultra-Metabolism food plan for 2 weeks and have NOT been hungry, except at mealtimes, and have lost 6 pound so far. The book has excited me so much that I have bought copies for 4 family members and several friends. My husband, sister-in-law and brother-in-law are now doing it with me. (We are all in our 60s.) My husband keeps asking me if the great dinners I fix are really on the plan - they are! As a person with several sweet teeth, I never thought I could stop eating sugar - what a pleasure to find that I can!

5 stars Finally, a book on weight loss that makes sense!

Dr. Hyman has hit upon a number of truths regarding weight loss and good health in general. Having read all the popular plans, I must say that Dr. Hyman is the first author to present all of these useful pieces of information in one place. Some of his material I had suspected to be true but no one has ever before explained it all so profoundly and clearly! At long last, I am losing those extra pounds and enjoying my meals! Although I have dropped the gluten and sugars, I do not feel deprived! Amazing!

2 stars Confusing detox instructions

2006-07-10     27 of 35 found this review helpful

I bought both this book and "The Detox Box." I was psyching myself up to do at least one week of the detox program but have found that the instructions in "Ultrametabolism" are at odds with those that come on the cards in "The Detox Box."

The cards list foods to be avoided in the detox stage. Among these are protein (except fish), citrus fruits (except lemons) and soy.

However, the book has a list of foods to enjoy in Phase I (detox) which includes oranges, lamb, chicken, turkey and soy nuts (see pp.243-247). The book also has some suggested recipes for Phase I which include all of above as ingredients (see pp.252-272).

This seems to me to be a major error on the part of the publisher or author.

2 stars Yet Another 8 Week Plan!

2006-06-14     27 of 33 found this review helpful

It wasn't surprising to see another diet book with an 8 week plan to "finally" get you on the right track. Well, I've followed the plan since April, and the results? Not much of a difference. I lost 4 pounds, but other diets have done that for me, and I feel good, but ensuring I get regular exercise does the same. If you're like me and have tried a dozen others, you might as well try it. No magic bullet here, but there is some practical advice.

Here we go again. Another magic solution to weight loss. What would starving societies think of Americans who spend their lives trying to lose weight, some to meet Hollywood standards others to have the pie and eat it? Even though the book has some interesting facts about the human metabolism, the solution to weight control remains the same: Get off the couch and excercise, eat moderately, and for goodness sake; read the ingredient labels of all manufactured food products.

We don't need another book to tell us what we have long known. Still authors, M.D.s, publishers, and booksellers are wise to keep counting on the vast majorities of us fatties to keep buying books with the hope of finding one that, finally, will say something new under the sun; preferably something that's easy, doable and does not require us to stop eathing more calories then we burn. .

1 stars you have to be rich to eat this way!

2006-07-17     24 of 52 found this review helpful

What a nice concept, to be able to buy all this food. I couldn't pay for the food listed even if it wasn't organic! Clearly written for those not working for a living.

4 stars What an eye-opener...

2006-12-02     23 of 23 found this review helpful

Honestly, I may sound like I'm the last to arrive at the table, but I didn't know half of the wisdom contained in this small, easy-to-digest volume. Counting calories won't work? I didn't know. High-fructose corn syrup? I've heard of it, but so what? Eating organic foods? Oh, please...why would I spend the extra money?

Well, all of those attitudes were altered permanently after reading Dr. Hyman's little gem. Currently, I have only a small problem with my weight and my eating habits--but, thanks to this book, I'm fairly confident it won't ever become a big problem. Don't be surprised if you find yourself transforming your pantries, your cupboards and your entire kitchen as soon as you put this book down...not that putting it down will be any easy task.

I give it four out of five stars only because some of what Hyman says feels like it's too high a bar to set for just about anyone...like, "If it has a label, don't eat it!" However, the spirit of even these most radical of his recommendations is well-intentioned, and unlikely to be lost on anyone who can take what he has to say with a grain of salt.

Just don't try to take it with a teaspoon of partially hydrogenated soybean oil.

5 stars This book is power packed with info

2006-09-24     23 of 26 found this review helpful

This book covers almost everything you will ever need to know about healthy eating. The diet is simply to stop eating foods that are man made that stop your metabolism from working properly, white flour, white sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and hydrogenated oils and start eating all natural foods that fill you up for far less calories and cause your body's metabolism to start burning calories efficiently, start eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, olive oil(for cooking), and lean meats and drink plenty of water and green tea.
I have read over 50 diet books and this one covers the most information, the author discusses the importance of Omega-3 fats in our diet. He talks about the dangers of inflammation, he recommends multivitamins, calcium, and fish oil supplements. He discusses how the nutrients in food interact with our genes to make us fat, and how to literally change or metabolism.
I had to read the Super Foods Rx,The Zone, The Omega Zone, the Sonoma diet, the anti-inflammation zone, and The Real Age Diet to get the information in this one book, save yourself the time and money and read this one, then start eating all natural. It Works!

5 stars Scientific Common Sense for Dieters

2006-08-06     23 of 25 found this review helpful

This is an excellent book. If you put the principles into practice you will get results. But it takes work and stick-to-itness, no quick fix here. Still the author equips you with information on how to raise your metabolism, which is a problem for many who diet unsuccessfully and become discouraged. The only additional thing you need is the motivation to stick to it. --Dr. Fred P. Gallo, author of "Energy Tapping" and "Energy Psychology."

2 stars A disappointment

2006-06-15     23 of 37 found this review helpful

There was no new information in this book about weightloss. I've read a quite a few books about loosing weight and the way the human body works and this one does not top the list of valuable information imparted. I'd recommend reading books about the glycemic index instead. Same basic information but the diets are much easier to follow and make more common sense. The diets in this book are just about impossible to follow!. I bought the e-book and would return it if I could! What a waste of $10.00 and I'm not a cheapskate when it comes to buying books but $10.00 was too much for this one!

5 stars So Good I Don't Consider Myself To Be On A "Program"

2007-05-17     22 of 24 found this review helpful

My biggest reason for praising this book so highly is that I don't feel like I'm on a diet or weight loss program. I really enjoy the fact that I can use the book as a general guideline and not be tied down to specific or hard to follow plan.

I'm a 35 year old male, 5 foot 10, and started following the guidelines when I weighed 283 pounds. 13 months later I'm down to 224 and counting, my latest physical reveals great numbers on all the vital tests, and I feel really confident that I will achieve my goal of 195 in due time.

Can I verify the science behind the book, obviously no. And certainly exercise has played a huge role in my weight loss (I work out at least 4 days a week). But eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats, etc., makes so much more intuitive sense than other diets that I've tried like Atkins (which worked short term but failed long term).

I used to never eat breakfast, now I go to bed with anticipation of what I'll make myself in the morning. The fact that eating breakfast is also a key metabolism booster makes it that much better - I love knowing that I'm starting my day off right. Interestingly, as Dr. Hyman predicts, I've found that fast foods and junk foods just aren't that appealling anymore. If I have a craving I indulge, I simply moderate the portion size (instead of the $1.49 bag of chips, I'll get the $.50 bag). Such moderation doesn't make me feel like I'm on a diet; I just feel sensible and proactive towards my health.

I've supplemented the ideas in Ultrametabolism with those in Volumetrics. I've also looked a little further into the interval training tips that Dr. Hyman stresses and have supplemented those as well.

5 stars About Health not just Weight Loss

2007-04-02     21 of 23 found this review helpful

I think the subtitle of this book takes our attention away from what it's really about. What's it really about? Paying attention to your body: what you put into it, what you get out of it, and the messages it is sending you about how it is functioning and what it needs. If you are overweight, and you learn the lessons of this book, you will lose weight (I've lost 20 pounds, thus far), but that will probably be only one of the results you'll notice. You'll feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally because you will be treating your body with respect and it will be treating you well in return.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to lose weight, this book will probably disappoint you. If you are looking to make real changes to better your overall health and help you live a longer, happier life, then this book is exactly what you need.

By the way, Dr. Hyman's work is based on the latest and best scientific/medical research. It's not some wacky fad.

3 stars nothing simple about it

2006-10-19     21 of 27 found this review helpful

Once again we are being duped with the misleading description "simple". This book has what are probably very good diet/lifestyle adjustments to help you lose weight and detoxify our systems. Dr. Hyman is no doubt sincere and has clearly done his homework but to imply that this is a "Simple" program is "simply" not true. The first half of the book explains how our modern diet is poisoning our systems and causing us to gain weight ad nauseum. We get it. Why can't one of the diet Gurus come up with an eating plan that relies on foods that are both readily available in your average grocery store or produce stand instead of the stuff stocked by specialty stores and health food stores. Where does the average consumer locate "grass fed beef" and "free range chicken" on the way home from the office? Dr. Hyman this is partially why obesity is such a problem, most people in the real world don't have the time, or resources to track down all these things and they simply give up. Anyone could write a diet book with the assumption that we all have access and the ability to provide ourselves with the products you describe and suggest. It is simply lazy science to recommend these things. Want to impress us? Go into a typical grocery store with a typical budget and show us the shopping list.

5 stars A Common Sense Approach To Weight Control

2006-08-15     21 of 23 found this review helpful

Mark Hyman's book outlines a plan to withdraw from the toxic and fattening diet enjoyed by most Americans today. Expecting to feel deprived, I instead found I felt great, better than I had in years, and though I lost no where near the weight the book forcasts, I attribute this to my age (72) and the fact that I'm in a five day a week aerobic and weight lifting program at the same time I'm modifying my diet and muscle weighs more than fat.

I'm satisfied to report that after four months, I've lost fifteen pounds. My blood pressure, which was getting to borderline levels, has settled in at 120/70, my chloresterol 158 overall, Good at 44, bad at 86, not all diet, but using this book with exercise has made me both look and feel younger than I have in years. The combo works.

Mark Hyman, M.D., combines the best of conventional and alternative medicine with a blend of science, intuition, integrity, and compassion. He is editor in chief of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, the most prestigious journal in the field of integrative medicine. In Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss Dr. Hyman provides a vivid road map to navigate your way back to health and fitness. As well as help you achieve your goals for long-term weight loss without counting calories, fat grams or carbs. You don't have to starve yourself anymore. You simply need to eat in harmony with your genes.

the first step in Ultrametabolism exposes seven myths that make you unhealthy as well as gain weight and keep it on. First Dr. Hyman discusses Starvation-- "Eating less and exercising more does not equal weight loss." Next he discusses Calorie's-- "All calories are created equal." Next is Fat.-- "Eating fat makes you fat." Fourth is Carbs.-- "Eating a low carb or no carb diet will make you thin." Next Dr. Hyman discusses that skipping meals doesn't help you lose weight. Next is the French.-- "The French are thin because they drink wine and eat butter" And lastly, Dr. Hyman discusses government food policies and food industry regulations. Dr. Hyman points out that the introduction of man-made substances such as trans-fats, are adding to our overall exploding health and weight problems over the past 30 years. This consumable plastic disrupts our metabolism by actually turning on a gene in your DNA, which slows metabolism causing you to gain weight. He also discusses high-fructose corn syrup, which is used to sweeten almost everything these days. Dr. Hyman states that these supersugars quickly enter your bloodstream and trigger hormonal and chemical changes which induces insulin surges that tell your brain to eat more and your fat cells to store more fat. If there are substances and foods that we eat that can trigger negative results, then surly there are ways to make us healthy and lose weight.

The second step of Ultrametabolism teaches you to turn on your metabolism and fat burning genes, and turn off your weight gain genes. Dr. Hyman will teach you how to program your body to lose weight automatically. And in the third step Dr. Hyman shows you by providing menus and recipes, along with exercise and lifestyle treatments designed to create healthy metabolism and overall health. This part is designed so it can be customized to your unique genetic needs to optimally awaken your fat-burning DNA.

Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss will change what you believe as "conventional wisdom" concerning weight loss. Much of what you think, or may think you know about weight loss actually has been making you gain weight. Dr. Hyman points to the fact that for every diet you go on, you end up gaining five pounds in the long run. Obesity is now overtaking smoking as the number one cause of preventable deaths with almost 70 percent of the adult population and one third of our children now overweight. Compounding the problem are the profitable foods the food industry pushes, entrenched pharmaceutical companies and our own government's recommendations, especially when it comes to the food pyramid or low fat in our diets. Ultrametabolism : The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss is not just another of many weight loss books on the market. Rather, the book is your body's owner's manual for overall health. If you only get one body manual, this is, without doubt...the one you want

This book is full of very good advice and I'm sure that it will work if properly applied. He asks his readers to find some pretty hard to find ingredients - at least in this area. And finding a doctor to perform some of the tests he recommends is equally difficult. I just don't know if this is a plan that can be used by someone of moderate income.

Fantastic health book if you are looking to change the way you eat FOREVER. I feel absolutely fabulous after using this book. I began in May of 2006 and am still going strong. I was a sugar JUNKIE, never more than 10 pounds overweight, but this curbed my sugar cravings, my exhaustion, and motivated me to get to the gym more than once a week. I liked it so much I have lent my book to others and even got my husband (a junk food junkie) on the plan. I have lost a total of 14 pounds since May when I started. I agree, this is no quick fix and some of the stuff is difficult to find, but the results are worth the effort. I stick to the stuff I like and switch it up every now and again. Do I have ice-cream once in awhile? absolutely. It is not a diet, it is a way of life. When you detox and then try to eat something loaded with chemicals, believe me, you feel it. You will not want that junk in your body again after you feel as good as you do after the first two weeks. The detox is hard (for me it was getting off sugar, but for my husband it was caffeine) and you will feel tired the first few days, but fight through it and it will be worth it. I should also mention that I suffer from MANY allergies to food, environment, etc. and have had no difficulty with this plan. Starting weight was 130 (5'4) and I am at 116.5 (5'4).

Although Dr. Hyman spends a little bit of time on his pet peeves concerning nutrition and the food industry, this book has some invaluable advice on detoxifying your system and improving your health. The fact that he allows dark (70%) chocolate is an added bonus.

The book contains menus and recipes, and is very easy to understand. None of the calorie counting, etc., of so many diets. I have noticed an improvement in energy, and have lost weight since adopting his eating and exercise regimen - in a very short time.

Dr. Hyman writes with great skill and empathy. I already knew a lot of the diet information. I learned something new along the way as well. The book contains a lot of scientific data well-explained. He was able to bring it all together for me in a wqay no one else could. This author is wise, caring and is not at all contemptuous of the reader. For these reasons, he's the the first person who has been able to convince me to exercise as well as follow the diet. I think those who are disappointed were expecting a magic bullet.

Ever since I stopped playing two-hour pick up basketball games regularly, I have struggled with love handles and beer belly (even though I don't drink beer). I eat very healthy low-glycemic foods for the most part and have regular rigorous martial arts workouts.

When I read this book, I found I ate and did most of what was suggested, including taking most of the recommended supplements. But there were key things that really helped and they were worth many times the cost of the book. For me, one tip was on the body's reaction to stress and the other on interval training.

It is also clear to me that this is not just a weightloss book. It is a simple better, non-fad way of eating for long-term health. I immediately noticed parallels with other suggested types of eating, like Macrobitics and Ayurveda.

I just finished the first phase suggested in the book, I feel great !!! Clear-headed, rarely hungry, calmly energetic, and I lost a notch in my belt buckle.

The science, reverences to how humans evolved, and all the other facts are great. But the real power of this book simplicity of making it work: two easy phases with recipes and shopping lists. It doesn't get much easier.

While I thought this was a decent book, please keep in mind that "stoking" your metabolism can have negative effects on your thyroid and consequently, result in eye and other problems. After two years of raising my metabolism (and thus losing 80 lbs) I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease (hyperthyroidism) which caused one of my eyes to bug out in a Hunchback of Notre Dame way. For me, I'd rather be fat than look like a bug-eyed freak with an increased chance of blindness in that eye.

This book is very revealing, and handles food issues with logic and examples. After learning about what different foods and ingredients actually do to your body, it makes it easier to want to eat better. I have changed my eating habits but still eat as much as I want and have lost 30 pounds over the past 4 months - and I wasn't really heavy to begin with. I feel much better throughout the day.

I am ordering a couple more copies for friends of mine who could really benefit from the info in this book.

4 stars For those who disagree with the book

2006-05-06     18 of 43 found this review helpful

I just got the book yesterday and have begun reading it. So far, I really like what he has to say! For those here who say, "Just eat less and move more" or "just cut some carbs and the rest of the crap out of yoru diet and exercise"...that is exactly what I have been doing for 3 months now with NO weight loss (and I have 30 lbs to lose!). I do not eat ANY sugar, I eat less than 40 grams of carbs a day (all complex) and I walk 45 min 4 or 5 times a week and also do a Core Body workout 3 times a week.

I don't know if this book will work for me or not but I am willing to give it a try since nothing else is working right now! As the Dr says, weight loss is not as easy as "eat less move more". Maybe for some, but certainly not for all! I will post an update once I get going :)

5 stars Surprised by negative comments

2006-10-17     17 of 22 found this review helpful

I have read this book twice, once to just read it, twice to go back through and underline things I never wanted to forget, and now I am reading it again to get ready to put it into action. I am on the E-mail list for this doctor sending case studies of people that he has helped. I must say I am very impressed and wish all doctors could be like Dr. Hyman. He looks at the whole body to find the reasons for sickness. I am surprised by the reviews here that say this is the same old information we have heard before. I have read a lot of diet books and I learned so much in this book about other things that can effect your weight besides eating right and exercise. And if I had heard of something before, now it was explained in a way that I could understand. I felt good that a few things that I had started to believe where confirmed in this book. When trying to get to the bottom of why I am over weight, this very nice to have my thoughts validated. There was a couple reviews that sounded like the person had not even read the book. One said they expected to find out more about the glycemic index, saying they were felt cheated that there was no information, when in reality the theory of the glycemic index is out dated. We now need to pay attention to the glycemic "load" of what we are eating. If they had read the book they would have known that. Another person said that it is a vegetarian diet, which it is not. Just look at the recipes in the back of the book to know that. Please don't right a review if you have not read the book.

If I was going to say anything negative at all it was how Dr. Hyman used and extreme example of the Atkins diet to try and put down the diet. His example in the book only ate fatty foods and meat, which not how Atkins intended people to eat. If Atkin's dieters actually read his book, you would find a very different diet then one presented here and the one presented by the media. Atkins is a low carb diet not a no carb diet. I have some other questions about why the Atkins diet might not be good and trying to stay on it forever is very difficult. He does not address the Atkins diet the way he should have.

Even though I was disappointed in this one example in the book, the rest really was very eye opening and very well explained. I have given a couple of extra copies away hoping to inspire. From the very first page I knew this was a very different diet book. It talks about "nurigenomics" the science of how food talks to your genes- to turn up your metabolism. He talks about things down to the cellular level as to why we function the way we do, making us over weight. It always helps me to implement a plan when I understand why. I have many things still to figure out about my health and why I have trouble with my weight and I think this book has given me the clues to solve the puzzle.

4 stars Dual review- Ultrametabolism and Evolution Diet

2007-01-20     16 of 25 found this review helpful

I got both books because I heard good things about both and I was happy with both though there were some major differences. Hyman says a lot of things in the beginning that make me want to think he's just some know-it-all doctor trying to blow smoke up my YOU-KNOW-WHAT and he says, "There's no magic pill" in dieting... unless you consider his plan the magic pill, I suppose???? ANyway, he got on to some very interesting info like debunking the myths of dieting (low carb, French, starvation)- great stuff! Morse, with starts off as a typical dieter (like me) and approaches it by uncovering out how we are supposed to eat. He's not a doctor like Hyman, but that's okay with me- I'm tired of doctors trying to prop up their industry by diagnosing everything they see (check out the "chronic fatigue syndrome- try lazy bum!).

The two authors had opposing ideas about how people become fat- Morse says its the way we eat the things we do and Hyman says it's different for everyone and sometimes it's our genes. They both say we're designed to want to eat constantly and they both describe how to do that without blimping up- eat low-sugar, high-fiber foods.

They also both talk about stress and how it effects your weight- this is really important and I think it's why some people gain weight while others don't eating the same food. Morse talks about HOW to eat and they both talk about WHAT to eat. The foods they include are pretty similar too- the standard health fare. If you like phases, check out ultrametabolism, if you like a moving standard, check out Evolution.

5 stars Ultra Metabolism by Dr. Hyman

The author has written a coherent volume on how food impacts the
bodily metabolism. There is an extensive section on the interaction between food and the genes. According to the author, an increased glycemic load is responsible for obesity. Witness the amount of sugar in a simple can of soda. i.e. 30 to 50 gms. of sugar

After a few cans of soda, rice, candy and cake, the body can
accumulate several hundred grams of sugar. This is an enormous
glycemic overload. The book points to the diet of the Pima Indians. This consisted of the following:

- squash, melon, legumes, beans
- mesquite, cacti, chia, herbs and fish

After years of the traditional diet, the Pima Indians began the
western diet consisting of the high glycemic index. All of a
sudden, the diseases of the west descended on the
traditional Indian tribe. The original diet of man consisted of
fish, omega 3, slowly absorbed carbs, alkaline plants and high
fiber. Avoid white rice, pastas, poultry with skin, pork, red meat, deli and caffeine.

There are specific tests to assist in determining good health.
The Lipid peroxide (TBARS) in urine tests fat rancidity. The
Urine 8- Hydroxy 2 deoxyguanosine test determines the level of
damaged DNA from free radicals.

Sumowrestlers eat Chanko soup containing seaweed, cabbage,
shiitake mushroom and tofu. This combination is packed with
antioxidants.

The acquisition is well worth the money for the high value of
the information contained within. The book is a serious
treatise on how to lose weight correctly and permanently.

This book could have been written in about 10 pages as it continually refers to the website so that you can find more in-depth information about just about anything he refers to. Seems to be more of an advertisement for his website than about healthy living and some of his suggestions - buy only organic for instance would be ideal in a perfect world but guess what we don't live in a perfect world. Not as much substance as I was hoping for and I was disappointed in the content.

If you are looking for something that pretty well explains, in plain terms and common sense, why we are all so fat, depressed and lethargic, this is the book. If you are serious about the state of your own helath, (particularly us baby boomers to whom the author obviously speaks) this book will make you think twice about what you are eating. I find myself reading labels at the grocery store now with much greater understanding, putting things back that I might have purchased otherwise, and going for the "whole and organic" foods instead. It's not difficult to make small changes that will have a huge impact on the way you feel. A real eye opener!

Wonderful book, Mark explains how food interacts with your genes and how it affects weight gain/loss. This is vital information for most people to be able to change their negative eating habbits. I am a vegetarian, and Mark has pretty much convinced me to become a vegan, by giving up cheese. I've already lost 5 lbs. from being completely aware of what I'm eating and I haven't even started his 3-week program!

I'd also recommend Dr. Neal Benard's book; Breaking the Food Seduction: The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings. It has allowed me to see why cheese draws me to it.

The book it clear, easy to understand, and gives solid advice. I feel I can do what Dr. Hyman is asking for the long-term, and I am seeing results. Not only on the scale, but I have blood work done regularly for a thyroid problem, and within a month many positive changes around blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides all took place.

I was so impressed with this book that I gave a copy to my doctor, who happens to be my friend as well. It was to be either a "holiday gift" or a "loan" if he didn't liike it. The book I bought out here on Amazon was the replacement for my original copy, because, in his words, "this is a super book, and you're not getting it back."

Most important, I feel good doing what is suggested, and the book makes it clear what to do. Get this book and follow it's advice, and you too may end up joining me getting your friends to get it too.

There are many diet books out there but few are as informative as "Ultrametabolism". That said, the information in this book is neither new nor groundbreaking. The utility of this book is the fact that it collects information from a number of areas and puts it into a clearly understandable format. There is also a great deal of useful scientific information here.

Venuto's email series "Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle" basically has the same guidelines as "Ultrametabolism" but his format is not as clear. The bottom line for losing weight, having it stay off, and gaining some health is to stick with a whole-food, calorie-reduced, predominantly vegetarian diet. Then you need to exercise in order to boost your metabolism and have the physiological benefits that occur in conjunction with proper diet.

It's quite simple and just requires some discipline. Kudos to Hyman for clearly explaining this.

This is one of the most informative health-related books that I have read. It also takes a holistic view of medicine. Most mainsteam doctors and their books do not believe in the value of supplements. This book combines healthy eating with holistic medicine and actually recommends supplements that help with particular problems. Most importantly, it explains how the body works and how it can benefit from whole foods, exercise, stress reduction, detoxification, and the use of supplements where needed to improve health and longevity.

I thoroughly enjoy the Ultra Metabolism dietary program. By following the simple recommendations, you realize that you are now eating whole foods and as I found, I am never hungry. You feast on great foods, much more different than what I thought were the 'great' foods that I was accustomed to eating. I highly recommend to anyone, but to enjoy this program, one must realize that
fast foods are not acceptable and that food preparation is now a priority. A small price to pay to be healthy as well as very 'regular'!

I have never had a "weight" problem... I have always worked out, ate fairly well and kept pretty trim. I even did fitness competitions back in the day.... however in the past few years I have noticed that with age I have been keeping extra weight on that I never had before. After following this book for the first 3 weeks my weight dropped about 10 pounds! The minute I went back to "normal" eating the 10 pounds went back on. I decided that this really had to be a "life" change and not a quick fix. I really try to eat gluten, dairy and sugar free and in my research have found that a lot of the "diet" research is preaching what this book has told us all along...Another good book is "The Fat Flush" and it says pretty much the same things as Dr. Hyman and I have combined things out of both books to eat better and stay healthier. Buy this book! Very educational!

If it is too exotic I don't have time to learn or to apply it and no one

I got the book out of the library to see their approach to weight loss. That was on May 7, 2006, and I liked the concept and started following their plan.It allows me to eat 5 times a day. Many of my other diets either concentrated on low carbs, high carbs or low fat or high protein diets. This plan incorporates them all showing you the good and leading you away from the bad. I then bought a copy from amazon.com on June 3, 2006, it is now July 7, 2006 and I was 312lbs when I started now I'm 269lbs I've lost 43lbs. goal is 210lbs. Some other things have occurred which I didn't expect, my terrible migraine headaches went away about 8 - 10 days after starting phase 1. My energy has increased considerably. the plan calls for exercise to help lose weight, but due to my job exercise isn't a concern. I,m a man who has sexual disfunction but have experienced some nice changes. I hope those of you who chose to give it a try has some of the same successes and more, good luck!

5 stars a complete resource

ive probably read about 80 or so health books before this one, ive run around in circles testing and trying out every new piece of information i ever came across. this is honestly the first book ive ever read which combined all of the things ive come to know as true through my own years of (painful and frustrating) trial and error. it is even more special to me because dr hyman comes from an orthodox medical background, naturopaths and other people who have the same type of opinions regarding health dont often have the same resources available to them as a doctor. dr hyman is a brilliant man, i am so glad somebody in his position has written such a resource that can hopefully save alot of people the heartache and disillusionment that comes from trying things that dont work. this book is simple and practical, it completely corrects where alot of health and diet theories have gone wrong (specifically in its phytonutrient index). directly after reading this i decided to attempt to find another doctor to work with, after years of having been done with them, i have now found one who has diagnosed my thyroid problem where others before could not and would not. i can not recommend this book enough.

if that wasnt enough, my brother lost a very quick 8 kgs by tweaking his diet according to dr hymans recommendations.

4 stars Great Book - but hard to keep up the way of eating

2006-06-15     13 of 19 found this review helpful

I loved the book - yes much of it is common sense, but once in a while you need to be reminded. The only part I have a problem with is the cooking of the food. I spent every night in the kitchen for hours cooking. I work and had to prepare the next morning and lunch meal so it would take almost 3 hours every night cooking and cleaning up. I did try cooking some of the items in bigger batches to freeze, but still very time consuming life style.

I do recommend it but be forewarned that it is expensive and time-consuming. It has worked for me for the two weeks I have been on it. I do have more energy and feel more clear headed (and lost weight), but I don't have any time to do anything after work except prepare food and I love to cook but this is a lot of work.

But for anyone who knows what whole foods are, knows what to eat, what not to eat, how much to eat and when to eat it, who already understands why it's important to regulate your insulin level and who doesn't eat fast food or HFCS or refined flour or whatever, this is really nothing new. Step one of the plan, for example, is to basically break bad habits and/or detoxify yourself, which is completely N/A for a lot of people.

I had hoped the book would focus more on how to reset a slow metabolism caused by over-exercise and under-eating. While this subject is touched upon very briefly, it's really more about how and what to eat which is kind of basic if you know anything about nutrition. The case studies are all people who are mis-managing their diets or their stress levels or both, not people who are living a healthy lifestyle but battling a slow metabolism.

Ultrametabolism is well written, it helps you to understand why what
you eat and how it is prepared is so important to your overall health.
It is not just about losing weight, it is about living a longer healthier
life, and all that goes along with that!!
There are recipes, shopping list, and summaries for each chapter that
are very helpful.
I am now helping my sisters to eat healthier, one who just had a baby, and the other who has always struggled with her weight.

Dr. Hyman combines good medical advice with a holistic/naturalpath use of food as meds...the Chinese have been doing this for centuries - as he notes several times. Most of the people I know have been doing this kind of eating on some level for over 25 years so this was not new news to me. I found the book a bit overwhelming - the detailed lists for shopping a chore. I also suspect Dr. Hyman is blood type A like me because he's pretty into the "Eat Right for You Type" recommendations for that particular blood type. I personally have an alergic reaction to soy and soy is one of the things recommended for my blood type A so I know his suggestions are not absolute or the whole answer but it's a beginning. I do agree that we are all very different and paying attention to our own bodies is really important and hard to do at times because it's so unfamiliar. Some of the recipes are really great and I am glad I got the book for the recipes alone! T I sure appreciate the time that went into it and I am delighted to see this kind of information becoming mainstream. Do I recommend it? Yeah...kinda...it couldn't hurt and it just might help!

3 stars WELL-ORGANIZED KNOWN SCIENCE

2006-04-17     12 of 33 found this review helpful

Several people have already pointed out that this book doesn't break new ground, but rehashes known healthy lifestyle tips. However, books and diets like this will ALWAYS be around because most human societies don't pass down this type of education. The ones that do (mostly pockets of people in Asia) have the healthiest people...duh.

So most people have to embark on a 'health education' to be healthy. This book certainly is a decent starter. It's gimick is to push the high-metabolism=health shallow logic...but any healthy lifestyle will lead to a healthy metabolism and that usually means a higher metabolism.

The most comprehensive, leading edge, collection/movement of a health education is Gary Null's works. garynull.com

I like the fact that newcomers to the healthy lifestyle will have this book as an option in their search for guidance.

Nothing new except for the title and style. These principles have been presented before, many times & they will continue to be written about - and that's ok because the need for this info will ALWAYS exist. These strategies do work - plain and simple.

Those that follow them usually find success.

I also recommend UltraPrevention.

5 stars Ultrametabolism is Ultra life changing

2007-01-09     11 of 12 found this review helpful

Within a few weeks of receiving and reading this book, I started implementing life changes I learned. I am still learning. I feel like I am going through a college course on nutrition that can be applied immediately into one's life. I wish I knew this stuff when I was a teen. I started this because I was feeling so tired and fatigued ALL the time. yes I wanted to lose weight but my motivating factor was more because I felt sick all the time. Within a few days of starting this new way of eating, my energy level went through the roof and didn't need naps anymore and uncontrolled cravings went away. Furthermore, my whole outlook and mood was in a huge upswing - it felt as if I was taking some sort of anti-depression pill, but it was just my diet that did that. I now realize health problems surrounding my thyroid, PCOS and insulin resistance can be turned around with these specific dietary changes. The low-fat craze of the late 80's and early 90's ruined my metabolism and created insulin resistance in my body. I didn't know all the reasons but this book explains why and that I can indeed get back to an efficient metabolism - hope has been restored. I feel this book is a gift from God. I was able to lose about 20 lbs in first 4-6 weeks. Over the holidays during vacation, I slipped from my healthy habits and I have felt tired etc....I am starting again this week and I know I will feel much better within a couple days. It truly has to be a lifestyle change. But what is great is that the things we have been told for years are bad for you are actually what we are deficient of in our diets for the Omega 3's etc... Olive oil, nuts, avocados -- is this really a diet? No just a new correct way of eating. I have bought three additional books and sent to friends because I believe it is that awesome and the changes in my health and feeling of well being is so dramatic. I highly recommend this book if you struggle with losing weight, feeling tired & fatigued. If you use caffenated sodas and carb loaded snacks to keep you going through the day -- trust me there is a better way and this book will help you more than you could imagine, if you are ready to make the change in your lifestyle and feel better, do yourself a favor and read Ultrametabolism. Also, if you have PCOS and/or insulin resistance -- read this book and decide for yourself.

4 stars Great Resource ... with personal caution

The Ultrametabolism plan looks great ... with a minor exception. If you are vegetarian, his program does not provide enough good suggestions to keep you on a healthy diet and still stay on the program. He really advocates eating fish very strongly. I have learned to modify his program and I'm hoping to see some real benefits. We'll see. Oh, when I first got the book it said there was a website with additional information, recipes, etc. for those who had bought the book. Yesterday, I finally got the link for the new membership to the website. So, it is now up and running, and is still growing in services.

I have struggled with many, many health issues associated with weight gain, food allergies, hypothyroid, chronic fatigue syndrome, fybromyalgia, and derpession. This book is rich with information that ultimately relates to all the above; in short, it's all about food. This manual will heal your ills, there is no question there. The information is about as up to date as there is without delving into new research. But know that this is a complex and revolutionary road. One must be willing to be patient as they re-learn everything they presently know about food & genes, dieting, and "how" to eat for their own physiology. It is a time consuming process of trial and error and is anything but a "simple plan." That said, the rewards WILL BE THERE for those patient enough with themselves to pursue.

Found this to be a very down to earth approach to losing weight. Although the author talks mainly about eating good foods in as natural form as possible which helps us maintain good health, the by-product is losing weight. I've tried the principles and did indeed lose weight. I've tried every other diet offered, but nothing ever seem to work. I've never approached losing weight by trying to put my body in balance and by eating foods that work best with my body . This is a three phase system. First, detox by getting rid of bad habits such as too much sugar, salt, and foods that clog the body. Second, re-introduce foods one at a time to make sure you weren't allergic to one particular food (that can cause weight gain as a side effect). Third a plan that can be used everyday without effort to maintain your weight loss. I mainly want to maintain good health and keep diabetes, heart disease, etc at bay....all associated with obesity. This definitely seems to work!

I am soon to be 58 years old and saw Dr. Hyman on a PBS show (WMHT). I listened to what he had to say, because the symptoms he was discussing about ill health were very similar to my own. I am a biologist and teach science and therefore have an understanding of what he was saying. I bought the book Ultrametabolism through Amazon.com and have not looked back! I have lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks, my skin glows, and my ankles, knees, and hand joints no longer ache with inflamation. I truly believe that Dr. Hyman's method of "ultrametabolism" has saved my life from ending too soon due to poor nutrition, the typical "American diet", and miss information about food so rampant in our society today. Thank you Dr. Hyman!

Over the years, too much dieting, poor food habits and aging (not to mention stress, menopause and lack of sleep) have wreaked havoc with my metabolism. It was nonexistent. If a diet worked at all, coming off put the pounds right back on. I was searching for a sane dietary change that would make me feel better, improve my health and help me lose weight. Ultrametabolism has worked and is still working. I've enjoyed experimenting with new foods and have actually come to enjoy eating a healthier diet. You can see your physician for testing after answering the quizzes in this book or just use the diet to begin correcting some of the body's imbalances through food. I'm so thankful I found something that works and provides a healthy basis for the rest of my life. Only one drawback is that recipes and shopping lists are geared for at least two people, which makes it difficult for singles to follow.

2007-01-26     9 of 15 found this review helpful

The many books about dieting and nutrition all mention more fiber, green stuff and legumes, less sugar etc... Using the latest knowledge on genomics and experience, UltraMetabolism makes you conclude that your body is like a "Rubik's cube" and there is no one "killer app" for it.
You need to use every component from protein food, detox, exercise etc.

I did loose a few pound - without any feeling of hunger - but more importantly I now have a long term plan.

The book could possibly be shorter as there are more than one repetition and in the explanations you quickly understand where Mark Hyman is taking you. But as the ad says "A must read for anyone owning a body"!!

I heard about this book and read it at my local library, then ordered it immediately. It's a great manual for the human body and really explains well how food affects your metabolism among many other systems in your body.

Although it can help with weight loss, it's focus is mainly on healthy eating, detoxing, food allergies/intolerances and I used it as an allergy elimination diet. Through this diet I discovered that dairy is inflamming my sinuses and wheat is causing headaches and fogginess, both problems I've been dealing with for 4 years and western medicine has not helped me. I've shoved every nasal spray available up my nose and none of them did a darn thing.

I think that everyone should read this book, regardless of their motivation to change their eating lifestyle. It is truly a manual for the body.

This is an outstanding book for anyone ready to take back their health and know the truth about the food you put in your body. Years ago I was lucky to have a doctor who understood that we were holistic beings and that what we ate did affect our health. I am loving eating all these great foods and people are telling me how great I look and asking what have I done differently!!!

This book had a lot of very clear information about food and the ingredients in food that can make everyones body unhealthy and fat. I enjoyed the entire first part of it. The second section was a little disappointing only because I am a very picky eater. The ideas given on recipes and new foods to start eating were not foods I would ever choose to eat. Many of the foods seemed exotic. I would suggest this book to anyone who is looking for a motivational book for weight loss. You might want to seek out other "cook books" for healthy recipes.

Finally!! A book that combines nutrition, health, and lifestyle in one easy, readable form. This is not just another weight loss book. It offers an excellent explanation of why the foods we eat AND the lifestyle choices we make are so important. It addresses much of the highly debated, often contradictory "nutritional" information in an easy-to-understand format. The information in this book is not just a band-aid, it will actually get to the root of the problem if followed, as proven by the testimonials.

5 stars Great book and attitude

2006-06-09     9 of 12 found this review helpful

I read a lot of weight loss books and I think this one is excellent. Years ago, I did the Fit for Life diet plan, which is very similar to the program proposed by Dr. Hyman. I did not eat any complex carbohydrates and ate nothing but whole foods. Let me tell ya, the weight just fell off and I never had so much energy in my life! Stress took hold of my life and I started to eat foolishly in recent years...so much of the weight came back on. In the past few months, I have cleaned up my act and have lost twenty pounds by eating in a healthy manner, i.e. much less sugar, fat and complex carbohydrates. I still have a few more pounds to lose, but I've had difficulty getting rid of them.

After reading Dr. Hyman's book, I plan on incorporating many of his ideas and making my diet even more pristine. I know from experience that it will work.

By the way, I like the way he says in his book that "food is medicine." He explains to the reader how food influences the body in a major way.

You wont look at food in the same way after reading this book. It will encourage you to enjoy healthy, wholesome food....and lose weight while doing so.

His book is educational and motivating....which are two pluses--especially when it comes to eating in a way that will promote weight loss.

4 stars Great Elimination Diet...But Misses the Key to Weight Loss

2008-01-07     8 of 8 found this review helpful

Mark Hyman's book is based on the belief that your body is toxic and inflamed because of poor eating. The theory in a nutshell is that you must eliminate white rice, refined grains, most red meats, and caffeinated beverages. It's a popular idea in many of the diet books lately when you reduce refined foods and allergens, your body will benefit. (I doubt this is news to you.) The Ultrametabolism Diet has a lot of excellent information, but the nuts and bolts get a little too complex, for a "simple plan," in my opinion.

The a big focus is on eating whole grains, fruits and veggies. Again, probably nothing new to you. If you're new to elimination style diets, this book is certainly as good as any of them out there.

To be honest, I needed more than simply a diet and explanation why I should follow the diet. I'm a diet pro, on and off diets for years now. The problem was never the diet, it was my emotions that would override my best intentions when ever times got though or I just plain got bored. Ok, so I'd lose some weight on the diet, but then what? Mark Hyman lays out six weeks, but what about the new six months or six years? In my case, I needed to look at the emotional side of my eating.

I've lost 25 pounds and made it through the holidays unscathed for the first time in my life, not because of some 'miracle diet' but because I was committed to myself in a way I had never been in the past. This happened with the help of a couple of wonderful programs helped me take a deep look at myself and my relationship between food and my emotions (The Self-Hypnosis Diet: Use The Power Of Your Mind to Reach Your Perfect Weight and Body Esteem: Weight Loss Through Self-Discovery (includes 2 Audio CDs)). I've never felt so positive in my life! If your having problems staying on diets, look into your emotional motivations and you may finally be able to step off the weight loss roller coaster.

This book has taken its place in my big library of diet books. I might even refer to it from time to time in the future for information. Overall, a good book, but like any diet, don't expect it to be so simple.

4 stars Excellent program for people who struggle with weight

2008-02-02     7 of 8 found this review helpful

The reviews for this book swing wildly from hearty approval to caustic disdain. The fact is, no one body is the same as the next, and no one diet will work the same for everyone. This does, however, work for some, myself included, who have struggled with weight gain for years with little success. Also, whatever you might think about the science or information in this book, the fact is that it achieves two major things: 1) the recipes taste good. 2) the diet feels very sustainable over the long haul.

There are people who can eat whatever they want, hardly exercise and never gain weight. They have fast metabolisms. Then there are those of us for whom the opposite is true. I hit puberty and started gaining 10 lbs a year until I was 20 years old and 200 pounds. I managed to slow the rate to another 50 pounds in the next 13 years. But a huge period of stress in my mid-thirties, both on the job and with my family, quickly added another 30. When I sat down with this book, I weighd 286 pounds. I seemed to be gaining weight indiscriminately and it was obviously time to adopt a new approach.

I too, have tried some diets. Things work for awhile, and then stop working. There were two diets where I had some measured success: a modified version of Atkins (with many more vegetables and leaner meat) and the 6 Week Body Makeover. The real problem with both of these is that they are entirely unsustainable from a food perspective. The first restricts carbs to below 40 grams per day, which doesn't satiate, and it is quite simply hard to live in the real world and consume no grain products. The second excluded salt, and none of the recipes were very good. What's the point if food doesn't at least taste OK? Moreover, these approaches are DIETS. Which never work in the long haul.

Ultrametabolism doesn't seem so much like a diet as it does a lifestyle. The fact is, we all have to floss our teeth every day for the rest of our lives. And the fact is, we all have to eat to sustain our bodies every day for the rest of our lives. This book outlines an easy way to develop that habit. And the recipes are delicious. I am a cook who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm surrounded by foodies and am one myself. I don't feel like I have to sacrifice and I get to eat amazing food.

For those who say that it is impossible to achieve this diet cooking for a family or if you are a busy person, I disagree. It's nothing more complicated than making a piece of fish or chicken, roasting a yam, and making a salad. You have to take what's offered and decide how to fit it into you life, but it's not that hard. I keep tamari almonds and a piece of fruit in my bag at all times and am never caught without something to eat. It's harder than driving through the fast food drive-through, but almost *everything* is harder than that.

In the end, you have to find what is effective for you. But for me, the fact that I've lost 12.5 pounds in the first month is a really good sign. And all while enjoying the food I eat and never being hungry. It has taken some time to adapt to eating 5 times per day, but really, it's not harder than having fruit, nuts, and turkey slices on hand.

Finally, if you think this might work for you, I recommend buying the Ultrametabolism Cookbook. It will significantly expand your arsenal of recipes, making it easier to develop this as a habit and lifestyle.

I highly recommend this book to the person who is seriously wanting to change their lifestyle and diet for the better!

4 stars A Simple Plan

The advantages of this diet are many- it seems to work, the food is very healthful and delicious , you can serve the same meals to yourself and the entire family , and you do not feel hungry or deprived. In fact you feel happy and satisfied and as if you have taken conrol of your life in a positive way.

5 stars Best Eating Plan Ever!

This is the best "diet" eating plan that I have ever been on and have already lost 11 lbs within 3 weeks. I also purchased the cookbook and couldn't be happier with the results. It takes alot of time to prepare fresh food but you can't beat the quality and taste. Better than restaurant and I've never ate so good. It is expensive to first start on because there is alot of things to get as staples but they do last for a long time and don't need to be repurchased frequently. I'm never hungry and have so much more energy. The pain I've experienced from fibromyalgia is decreased so much that I hardly need to take pain medication. I'm really happy with this program and feel fortunate that I found it.

3 stars Recipes good, rest of book not so good

If you skipped directly to the recipes, you wouldn't be missing much. He wants you to eat whole foods, take some supplements, and throw in some activity here and there. Eliminate caffeine, white rice, flour, etc.

I did like the recipes (too much reliance on soy products and fish, though), and he also gives you ideas for quick meals and some snacks, although he should have given guidelines for what to look for in a good snack bar, instead of just throwing out some brand names that would be unfamiliar to most people.

And, btw, you have to provide an email before you can download the free stuff at the website.

Check out of your library first--worth it to buy used for the recipes.

5 stars Excellent Book

This is a really great book! I did not buy this for actual weight loss, although I do want to lose a few pounds. This book is the "instruction manual for YOUR body" customized specifically for you because everyone is different. It teaches you to understand foods and how foods affect your body and can help you identify food allergies which OFTEN go undiagnosed and cause all kinds of health problems. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE regardless of weight.

5 stars The great secret for weight loss

Ultrametabolism is one of the best diet book in market these days. The reason behind this is Mr Mark Hyman not just offer diet plan for weight loss but he explain in detail the whole myth behind it.
He is very up front and straight forward when it comes to weight loss.

There are several reasons why people fail to lose weight.
1. Sluggish Metabolism
2. Thyroid Problems
3. Allergies
4. Fatty Liver
5. Insulin resistance
6. essential fatty acid deficiency
7. Vitamins deficiency
8. Cellulite problem
9. Fluid retention
10. Lymph vessels
11. Medicines make you fat
12. Stress level

The book is great to read as compare to other diet books. But again everybody is different in case of losing weight and it's not easy to shed those extra pounds.

4 stars Easy-To-Follow, Reader-Oriented Book

2008-07-24     5 of 5 found this review helpful

I bought this book because of a recommendation by someone that had implemented, and kept using Ultra-Metabolism "steps" with great success. Upon reading Ultra-Metabolism, I recognized information I use and share...all the time.

Why read or buy another "weight-loss" book when the Seven Keys to the New Science of Weight Loss are listed on page 73-74? According to Dr. Hyman, everyone has his or her own instruction manual. So why purchase this book? I would suggest that you download guides from www.ultrametabolism.com. This may be enough for you. The book serves as support and offers reminders to help people keep on track.

Ultra-Metabolism quizzes you and guides you, step-by-step, to deciphering your own metabolism, and a whole lot more, in what he calls an "Ultra-Metabolism Prescription". Again, Dr. Hyman instructs us that this is the basis for generating the right instructions to your own body, through diet, and ... Ultra-Metabolism.

Dr. Hyman follows the premise of food containing information to talk to our genes, or "Nutrigenomics". In addition to offering exciting, cutting-edge research, he offers nutritionally-sound advice on how you can talk to your genes: Eat real, whole foods; eat foods high in phytonutrients; eat foods with a low glycemic to control appetite; eat more fiber intake to lower body fat; get your meal timing right to help turn on your metabolism; reduce stress (stress makes you fat, relaxation makes you thin); exercise in a manner that turns on metabolism; and reduce inflammation.

"Eat breakfast daily: Spread your food intake and calories throughout the day; Wait at least two to three hours after your last meal before going to sleep."

Where have you heard this before?

Another example of simple, effective suggestions are supplements to consider when you are turning on Ultra-Metabolism:

"1. A multivitamin and mineral combination. 2. A balanced, absorbable calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplement. 3. An omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

Many people do very well with a structured approach to weight loss. As the reader would expect, Dr. Hyman guides you to natural weight loss, step-by-step. Starting with Step one: Detoxifying the liver.

In addition to offering a plethora of practical, easy-to-implement weight loss suggestions, the author busts a few "myths" while promoting education. He includes information regarding "Nutrition", and how we come to think about food:

P. 66 The food industry generates more than a trillion dollars in annual sales, accounts for 12 percent of the U.S. gross national product (GNP), and employees 17 percent of the country's labor force. It spends more than $33 billion a year on marketing alone. Seventy percent of those dollars go to pushing fast food, convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and desert. Only 2.2 percent of those marketing dollars are spent on advertising for fruit, vegetables, grains or beans.

I also enjoyed Dr. Hyman inclusion of relevant and stimulating quotes:

"Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises."
Samuel Butler

As you would expect, Dr. Hyman offers the usual faire of delicious, natural recipes, and Ultra-Metabolism possesses its fair share of "buzz-words". Ultra-Metabolism also includes Dr. Hyman's attempt to generate an on-line Ultra-Metabolism community, which comes off as a bit far fetched. However, taking cues from various weight-watching groups, his efforts may very well bear fruit.

The "Food is Medicine" premise of Ultra-Metabolism focuses this book as excellent "support" literature. Ultra-Metabolism reinforces your healthy lifestyle choices, which, in turn, support your health and wellness. Ultimately, in this "win-win" situation, you gain timely, user-friendly, effective resources and guidance to be well-inform about the choices you may make ... a recipe for success.

I prefer to recommend natural health texts that acknowledge alternative health practices, and their long-time contributions to the health, stress reduction and wellness fields; this acknowledgement was lacking in Ultra-Metabolism. However, given the exceptional nature of this easy-to-follow, reader-oriented book, I am happy to recommend it.

2 stars Good for Feeling Good but Not Losing Weight

2008-05-31     5 of 6 found this review helpful

The idea that you do not need to count calories as long as you eat only from the approved list of foods in this book did not work for me. I loved the foods I was able to eat and the recipes were great (I love vegetarian/vegan eating so it was pretty easy for me) and I think maybe I simply overate. I did this diet religiously for 3 months and did not lose any weight at all. While I'm not really "overweight," I do have a pesky 5-7 or so pounds that I'm always struggling with (I'm only 5'2" so this is a lot of weight for me). This diet did nothing to rid me of that. (I know, I know-- people will say maybe I don't need to lose it but I do). I think if a person is quite overweight and eats a lot of processed foods they could benefit from this diet quite a bit but if you already eat in a pretty healthy way and are close to your goal weight, this is not the diet to help rid you of those last few pounds. I did feel very good on the diet, I had good energy and slept very well and just felt clean.

5 stars Just doesn't tell you what you already know!

Heard the CD version of ULTRAMETABOLISM: THE SIMPLE
PLAN FOR AUTOMATIC WEIGHT LOSS, written and read
by Dr. Mark Hyman.

Although I've read many diet books over the years, this one
made a lot of sense because it didn't just automatically tell you
to eat less and exercise more . . . . rather, it explains the concept
of nutrigenomics--the science of how food talks to our genes.

It also showed me the folly of skipping breakfast, citing the
example of a Sumo wrestler . . . he will typically not
eat anything upon awakening, then exercise for
several hours . . . by the time he eats dinner, he eats
too much because he has starved himself throughout the
day . . . and he does this just before going to sleep
(another no-no).

This is one of just many ideas that caught my attention . . . among
the others:

* No bug will ever go near an opened tub of margarine.

* Processed carbs are empty carbs.

* Carbs should come from whole, unprocessed foods. If you eat these,
you will lose weight.

* My grandmother said: Buy fresh, eat fresh.

* That led to my saying: If it has a label, don't eat it.

* Artificial sweeteners create the need for more sweeteners in your body.

* Eat early and eat often. Graze, don't gouge.

* Chocolate can be good for you, but it must be dark with a high
percentage of cocoa. And only eat a few squares.

* Follow this principle: Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince
and dinner like a pauper.

* Your plate should like an impressionist panting with plenty
of color.

* Try to get up to 10,000 steps a day. Also, get a pedometer.

Perhaps best of all, Dr. Hyman makes constant reference to an informative website. Readers who go there will gain much additional information.

5 stars No Sumos Here!

We lead a generally healthy life already and exercise regularly. However, we frequently feel run down and our weight has remained unchanged. I've told my husband for years that he should not eat late at night - the "sumo wrestler" chapter has finally convinced him! We have eliminated all processed foods, white flour, white sugar, etc., from our diet and we feel amazing. We have adopted all of the principles suggested in the book, but the book is worth buying even if you consider just some of what Dr Hyman has to say. Not convinced? Go to www.ultrametabolism.com and read a chapter from the book to decide for yourself. We have found this book to be a lifestyle changing approach rather than crash diet. It is tricky at first to remember what you are supposed to eat and when (old habits die hard esp when you are used to convenience foods), but once you get into a routine and know what is allowed it gets much
